  • A 5-year prospective clinical study of submerged and nonsubmerged Paragon system implants in the edentulous mandible.
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: The International journal of prosthodontics. - : Quintessence. - 0893-2174 .- 1139-9791. ; 23:3, s. 231-8
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PURPOSE: The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the clinical outcome of two different surgical protocols in the edentulous mandible: submerged and nonsubmerged. Further, the Paragon dental implant with a titanium plasma-sprayed surface was evaluated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-nine consecutively treated patients with 168 implants supporting fixed prostheses were included. All but 3 patients were provided 6 implants, placed via nonsubmerged healing on one side and submerged healing on the other. Data were collected from patient records and radiographs. Twenty-four patients participated in the 5-year clinical follow-up examination. RESULTS: After 5 years, all patients still had their mandibular fixed prostheses in function. Cumulative survival rates were 100% for prostheses and 99.4% for implants. However, 3 implants fractured in 1 patient. One submerged implant was lost before loading but no further implants were lost during follow-up. The radiographic bone loss was small for all implants with a mean of 0.14 mm (standard deviation [SD]: 0.37) at 1 year and 0.42 mm (SD: 0.48) at 5 years for nonsubmerged implants and 0.17 mm (SD: 0.32) at 1 year and 0.51 mm (SD: 0.33) at 5 years for submerged implants. Nineteen implants (including the 3 that fractured) presented annual bone loss exceeding 0.2 mm after the first year, yielding a cumulative success rate of 86.2% after 5 years. CONCLUSION: Single-stage surgery was shown to have the same predictability as two-stage surgery in the anterior edentulous mandible. Paragon implants with a titanium plasma-sprayed surface showed a fracture rate of 2.2% and a success rate of 86.2% after 5 years.

  • Dental implants in patients with Sjögren's syndrome: a case series and a systematic review
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. - : Elsevier BV. - 0901-5027 .- 1399-0020. ; 48:9, s. 1250-1259
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study was to assess the clinical outcomes of dental implants in patients with Sjögren's syndrome (SS). The study consisted of two parts: report of a case series and a systematic review of the literature. The results of the clinical series revealed that 19 patients received 107 implants and were followed for a mean of 125 months. Two patients lost three implants (failure rate 2.8%, 3/107). At the last follow-up, there was a mean marginal bone loss (MBL) of −2.190 ± 1.384 mm; estimated MBL after 30 years was 4.39 mm. The review identified 18 studies, resulting in 19 studies for analysis including the present clinical series. A total of 712 implants were placed in 186 patients; 705 implants were followed up for a mean of 72.5 months (failure rate 4.1%, 29/705; failed at a mean time of 12.9 ± 31.7 months). The probability of failure was 2.8% (95% confidence interval 1.6–4.1%). Primary SS patients had a lower implant failure rate (2.5%, 3/118) than secondary SS patients (6.5%, 12/184). In conclusion, dental implants should be considered by dentists as a viable treatment option for patients with SS, as the failure rate is fairly low. SS patients may, however, present a higher MBL around implants than patients from the general population. © 2019 International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons

  • Smoking and dental implants: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of dentistry. - : Elsevier BV. - 1879-176X .- 0300-5712. ; 43:5, s. 487-498
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent studies implicate smoking as a significant factor in the failure of dental implants. This review aims to test the null hypothesis of no difference in the implant failure rates, risk of postoperative infection, and marginal bone loss for smokers versus non-smokers, against the alternative hypothesis of a difference.

  • Tilted versus axially placed dental implants: A meta-analysis.
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Dentistry. - : Elsevier BV. - 0300-5712 .- 1879-176X. ; 43:2, s. 149-170
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of the present review was to test the null hypothesis of no difference in the implant failure rate, marginal bone loss, and postoperative infection for patients being rehabilitated by tilted or by axially placed dental implants, against the alternative hypothesis of a difference.

  • Implants and/or teeth: consensus statements and recommendations.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of oral rehabilitation. - : Wiley. - 1365-2842 .- 0305-182X. ; 35:Suppl 1, s. 2-8
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In August 23-25, 2007, the Scandinavian Society for Prosthetic Dentistry in collaboration with the Danish Society of Oral Implantology arranged a consensus conference on the topic 'Implants and/or teeth'. It was preceded by a workshop in which eight focused questions were raised and answered in eight review articles using a systematic approach. Twenty-eight academicians and clinicians discussed the eight review papers with the purpose to reach consensus on questions relevant for the topic. At the conference the consensus statements were presented as well as lectures based on the review articles. In this article the methods used at the consensus workshop are briefly described followed by the statements with comments.

  • Current knowledge about the hydrophilic and nanostructured SLActive surface
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dentistry. - 1179-1357. ; 2011:3, s. 59-67
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract: This review summarizes the present documentation for the SLActive surface, a hydrophilic and nanostructured surface produced by Straumann Company in Switzerland, and covers the results from 15 in vitro, 17 in vivo, and 16 clinical studies. The SLActive surface is a development of the large grit-blasted and acid-etched SLA surface, and is further processed to a high degree of hydrophilicity. In general, the in vitro and in vivo studies of the SLActive surface demonstrate a stronger cell and bone tissue response than for the predecessor, the SLA surface, produced by the same company. However, in most studies, this difference disappears after 6–8 weeks. In the clinical studies, a stronger bone response was reported for the SLActive surface during the early healing phase when compared with the SLA surface. However, the later biological response was quite similar for the two surfaces and both demonstrated very good clinical results.
