  • The CDIO syllabus: a comparative study of expected student proficiency
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Engineering Education. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0304-3797 .- 1469-5898. ; 28:3, s. 297-315
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Engineering students must graduate with command of a vast body of technical knowledge. They must possess personal, interpersonal and system-building skills to function in teams, and be prepared to produce products and systems. Their education must have been structured under a curriculum blending ability to combine technical expertise with ethical, innovative, philosophical and humanistic acumen. This paper describes a unique international collaboration among four universities to reform engineering education. The collaborators agreed to a statement of goals, which includes descriptions of knowledge, skills and attitudes vital to an effective education, and codifies proficiency levels expected of graduates. We developed and utilized unique stakeholder surveys both to validate our prototype and to determine desired proficiency levels. This collaboration resulted in The CDIO Syllabus, A Statement of Goals for Undergraduate Engineering Education. The syllabus is both a template and a process that can be used to customize the syllabus to others' programmes. It can define new educational initiatives/and be employed as the basis for rigorous assessment. This paper details how, with the input of industry, academia and others, we employed an engineering problem-solving paradigm to effect our redesign. It outlines the syllabus and the unique process employed to create it.

  • A survey of ABCA1 sequence variation confirms association with dementia.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Human mutation. - : Hindawi Limited. - 1098-1004 .- 1059-7794. ; 30:9, s. 1348-54
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We and others have conducted targeted genetic association analyses of ABCA1 in relation to Alzheimer disease risk with a resultant mixture of both support and refutation, but all previous studies have been based upon only a few markers. Here, a detailed survey of genetic variation in the ABCA1 region has been performed in a total of 1,567 Swedish dementia cases (including 1,275 with Alzheimer disease) and 2,203 controls, providing evidence of association with maximum significance at marker rs2230805 (odds ratio [OR]=1.39; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.23-1.57, p=7.7x10(-8)). Haplotype-based tests confirmed association of this genomic region after excluding rs2230805, and imputation did not reveal additional markers with greater support. Significantly associating markers reside in two distinct linkage disequilibrium blocks with maxima near the promoter and in the terminal exon of a truncated ABCA1 splice form. The putative risk allele of rs2230805 was also found to be associated with reduced cerebrospinal fluid levels of beta-amyloid. The strongest evidence of association was obtained when all forms of dementia were considered together, but effect sizes were similar when only confirmed Alzheimer disease cases were assessed. Results further implicate ABCA1 in dementia, reinforcing the putative involvement of lipid transport in neurodegenerative disease.

  • Unemployment and subsequent wages : does gender matter?
  • 1999
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Are there any differences in how men and women fare from unemployment in terms of the wages they receive on a new job? This paper addresses that question using the 1991 wave of the Level of Living Survey. The results suggest that men who experience unemployment will suffer a reduction of subsequent wages while no such effect could be found for women. These findings support the interpretation that women invest more in general rather than specific human capital which make them less exposed to career interruptions, at least those of a short duration. Due to the favourable labour market at the time, average unemployment duration was rather short, which may have prevented general capital from depreciating. However, the presence of large negative occurrence effects for men suggests that unemployment, even of a short duration, is associated with considerable loss of human capital.
