  • Common variants at 6q22 and 17q21 are associated with intracranial volume
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Nature Genetics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1061-4036 .- 1546-1718. ; 44:5, s. 539-544
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During aging, intracranial volume remains unchanged and represents maximally attained brain size, while various interacting biological phenomena lead to brain volume loss. Consequently, intracranial volume and brain volume in late life reflect different genetic influences. Our genome-wide association study (GWAS) in 8,175 community-dwelling elderly persons did not reveal any associations at genome-wide significance (P < 5 x 10(-8)) for brain volume. In contrast, intracranial volume was significantly associated with two loci: rs4273712 (P = 3.4 x 10(-11)), a known height-associated locus on chromosome 6q22, and rs9915547 (P = 1.5 x 10(-12)), localized to the inversion on chromosome 17q21. We replicated the associations of these loci with intracranial volume in a separate sample of 1,752 elderly persons (P = 1.1 x 10(-3) for 6q22 and 1.2 x 10(-3) for 17q21). Furthermore, we also found suggestive associations of the 17q21 locus with head circumference in 10,768 children (mean age of 14.5 months). Our data identify two loci associated with head size, with the inversion at 17q21 also likely to be involved in attaining maximal brain size.

  • Common variants at 12q15 and 12q24 are associated with infant head circumference
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Nature Genetics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1061-4036 .- 1546-1718. ; 44:5, s. 532-538
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To identify genetic variants associated with head circumference in infancy, we performed a meta-analysis of seven genome-wide association studies (GWAS) (N = 10,768 individuals of European ancestry enrolled in pregnancy and/or birth cohorts) and followed up three lead signals in six replication studies (combined N = 19,089). rs7980687 on chromosome 12q24 (P = 8.1 x 10(-9)) and rs1042725 on chromosome 12q15 (P = 2.8 x 10(-10)) were robustly associated with head circumference in infancy. Although these loci have previously been associated with adult height(1), their effects on infant head circumference were largely independent of height (P = 3.8 x 10(-7) for rs7980687 and P = 1.3 x 10(-7) for rs1042725 after adjustment for infant height). A third signal, rs11655470 on chromosome 17q21, showed suggestive evidence of association with head circumference (P = 3.9 x 10(-6)). SNPs correlated to the 17q21 signal have shown genome-wide association with adult intracranial volume(2), Parkinson's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases(3-5), indicating that a common genetic variant in this region might link early brain growth with neurological disease in later life.

  • Influence of magnetic fields on electron-ion recombination at very low energies
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 84:21, s. 4822-4825
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Radiative recombination (inverse photoionization) is believed to be well understood since the beginning of quantum mechanics. Still, modern experiments consistently reveal excess recombination rates at very low electron-ion center-of-mass energies. In a detailed study on recombination of F and C ions with magnetically guided electrons we explored the yet unexplained rate enhancement, its dependence on the magnetic field B, the electron density n(e), and the beam temperatures T-perpendicular to and T-parallel to. The excess scales as T-perpendicular to(-1/2) and, surprisingly, as T-parallel to(-1/2), increases strongly with B, and is insensitive to n(e). This puts strong constraints on explanations of the enhancement.

  • Recombination of F6+ with free electrons at very low energies
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Physica Scripta. Topical Issues. ; T80B, s. 298-300
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Radiative and dielectronic recombination of F6+ have been studied at the heavy ion storage ring TSR in Heidelberg. For a detailed investigation of rate enhancement effects at very low electron-ion center-of-mass energies experimental parameters such as the magnetic guiding field, the electron density and the adiabatic expansion factor of the electron beam have been varied systematically. Whereas measurements at different electron densities show no influence on the enhancement and while a variation of the expansion factor evokes the predicted behaviour, we see an increase of the enhancement with increasing axial magnetic field between 20 mT and 70 mT.

  • Dielectronic recombination resonances in F6
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Physical Review A - Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics. - 1050-2947. ; 66:1, s. 012703/1-012703/13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Electron-ion recombination spectra of the Li-like ion F6+ in the energy range 0.0-0.6 eV from two different ion storage rings are presented, showing excellent agreement. The experimental results are compared with a calculated spectrum, obtained by combination of relativistic many-body methods and complex rotation, and the agreement is found to be very good. The recombination spectrum in the studied energy region is determined by the 2p6l dielectronic recombination resonances. The lowest-energy resonances are found around 10 meV, and include one broad resonance overlapping the threshold. The recombination rate coefficients are, even in this region, very well accounted for by the calculation. It is further shown that the nonrelativistically allowed resonances contribute to less than 60% of the integrated rate coefficients in the specified energy range.

  • Molecular dynamics based analysis of the absorption of spectra of Nd3+-doped Na+ β’’-alumina.
  • 1993
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. ; 48:14, s. 10129-10136
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The polarized absorption spectra of Nd3+-doped Na+ beta''-alumina have been treated theoretically for five neodymium concentrations. The perturbing crystal field, needed in the Judd-Ofelt analysis, is calculated from a molecular-dynamics simulation for each composition. Oscillator strengths and Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters are calculated using a point-charge model at each time step in the simulation for each of the Nd3+ ions in the simulation box. A study of the effect of the dynamics of the system on these parameters was also made. The theoretical results thus obtained are compared to experiment. It is shown that the absorption spectra can be explained essentially on the basis of the special structural situation of the Nd3+ ions in these materials.
