  • Why is your paper rejected? Lessons learned from over 5000 rejected transportation papers
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Communications in Transportation Research. - 2772-4247. ; 4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Academic papers are the cornerstone of knowledge dissemination and crucial for researchers’ career development. This is particularly true for rapidly evolving research domains such as transportation, as evidenced by the surge of journals and papers in the past decade. While abundant literature offers guidance on successful publication strategies, insights into the reasons for rejection are rare. This study fills in this gap by examining why papers are rejected in the area of transportation. We present concrete evidence based on data from over 5,000 rejected transport papers. Quantitative analyses are conducted to reveal the impacts of similarity rate, duplication submission rate, and topic on desk rejections. Additionally, we shed light on the distinct focus reviewers have when serving different journals. We hope the results could equip transport researchers with a deeper comprehension of publication criteria and a better awareness of common but avoidable mistakes.

  • Suicide among Older People in Different European Welfare Regimes: Does Economic (in)Security Have Implications for Suicide Prevention?
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health (IJERPH). - : MDPI AG. - 1661-7827 .- 1660-4601. ; 19:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Older adult suicide rates vary widely within Europe, and differential welfare policies might contribute to this. We studied variations in economic indicators and suicide rates of people 65+ across 28 European countries and examined the effects of these indicators on suicide rates, grouping countries according to their socio-political systems and welfare regimes. Suicide data was obtained from the WHO European Mortality Database. The European Union Statistics on Income and Living Conditions and the European Union Labour Force Survey provided data on economic indicators. Linear mixed models were applied. Suicide rates ranged from 4.22/100,000 (Cyprus) to 36.37/100,000 (Hungary). Material deprivation was related to elevated suicide rates in both genders in the pooled data set and in men but not women in the Continental and Island countries. Higher ratio of median income (65+/under 65) was associated with lower likelihood of suicide in women in the South-Eastern European countries. In the Nordic region, the 65+ employment rate was associated with a decreased likelihood of suicide in men. These factors to some extent show economic insecurity against older people, which influences the likelihood of suicide. Active labor market policies and inclusive social environment may contribute to suicide prevention in this age group.

  • Psychometric validation of the Persian nine-item Internet Gaming Disorder Scale - Short Form : Does gender and hours spent online gaming affect the interpretations of item descriptions?
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Behavioral Addictions. - : Akademiai Kiado. - 2062-5871 .- 2063-5303. ; 6:2, s. 256-263
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and aims: The nine-item Internet Gaming Disorder Scale -Short Form (IGDS-SF9) is brief and effective to evaluate Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) severity. Although its scores show promising psychometric properties, less is known about whether different groups of gamers interpret the items similarly. This study aimed to verify the construct validity of the Persian IGDS-SF9 and examine the scores in relation to gender and hours spent online gaming among 2,363 Iranian adolescents. Methods: Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and Rasch analysis were used to examine the construct validity of the IGDS-SF9. The effects of gender and time spent online gaming per week were investigated by multigroup CFA and Rasch differential item functioning (DIF). Results: The unidimensionality of the IGDS-SF9 was supported in both CFA and Rasch. However, Item 4 (fail to control or cease gaming activities) displayed DIF (DIF contrast = 0.55) slightly over the recommended cutoff in Rasch but was invariant in multigroup CFA across gender. Items 4 (DIF contrast = -0.67) and 9 (jeopardize or lose an important thing because of gaming activity; DIF contrast = 0.61) displayed DIF in Rasch and were non-invariant in multigroup CFA across time spent online gaming. Conclusions: Given the Persian IGDS-SF9 was unidimensional, it is concluded that the instrument can be used to assess IGD severity. However, users of the instrument are cautioned concerning the comparisons of the sum scores of the IGDS-SF9 across gender and across adolescents spending different amounts of time online gaming.

  • Binge-Watching and Mental Health Problems : A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. - : MDPI. - 1661-7827 .- 1660-4601. ; 19:15
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Binge-watching, the viewing of online videos or streamed content, may be associated with different types of mental health problems. The present study aimed to investigate the associations between binge-watching and five mental health concerns including depression, loneliness, sleep problems, anxiety, and stress. Methods: Academic databases of PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, ProQuest, PsycINFO, and Psych Articles were systematically searched through February of 2022. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale was used to assess the methodological quality. A meta-analysis was performed on Fisher's z values as effect sizes, using a random effect model. Publication bias, small study effect, and moderators in this association were assessed. Results: Binge-watching was significantly associated with the five types of mental health concerns with the most robust correlations found with stress (0.32) and anxiety (0.25). Stronger associations between binge-watching and two types of mental health problems (depression and sleep problems) were found during the COVID-19 pandemic than before the pandemic. Moreover, stronger associations between binge-watching and two types of mental health problems (stress and sleep problems) were found in developing countries than in developed countries. Conclusions: The associations between binge-watching and mental health concerns were significant and positive. Programs and interventions to reduce binge-watching should be considered and tested.

  • Conceptualizing Data Needs within Contexts of Data Discoverability and Reuse : A Study of Environmental and Social Scientists
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: IST23 Conference. - : Association for Information Science & Technology.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study contributes to the conference theme of information science processes and practices by examining the research data discovery contexts of ecological and social scientists who reuse datasets for research. The aim of the research was to gain insight into the data discovery contexts of these scientists and to understand the data needs related to data discoverability and reuse. The study identified four dimensions of data needs, including research processes, making sense of data, data reuse, and data access. Additionally, a conceptualization of data needs within the context of data reuse was proposed, which has not been thoroughly examined in previous studies. The study employed a mixed-method approach within the post-positivist research paradigm to identify the different contexts in which data is discovered. A combination of survey and in-depth interview techniques were used to investigate the broader contexts of data discovery in people’s information-seeking processes. The critical incident technique was used to elicit the contexts of data discovery, and the interview protocol was structured based on the stages of a data lifecycle. Interviews were conducted with 24 participants from three organizations, including TERN, ADA, and CSIRO. Participants held diverse job roles and were at different career stages. The study identified four dimensions of data needs and examined their relationship with the roles of data managers and end-users. The findings contribute to the existing literature on data needs and emphasize the potential usefulness of research data and the need for paradata. The study also suggests that anticipating the contexts of data reuse involves considering what data users may find useful. Ensuring data quality is crucial for successful data reuse, which involves having access to organizational data expertise, providing data in various formats and platforms, and ensuring sufficient data coverage. Data needs are influenced by the specific research objectives, which in turn affects the criteria for selecting and reusing data. Clear data licensing conditions are crucial to facilitate data reuse.

  • Investigation of Contexts of Data Discovery and Selection Criteria for Clinical Trials Data
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: IST23 Conference. - : Association for Information Science and Technology.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study explores the data discovery contexts and selection criteria used by clinical trials researchers to reuse open clinical trials and related health data. The research examines the connections between how researchers initiate personal data journeys and follow managed processes of data selection criteria. A mixed-method approach within the post-positivist research paradigm was adopted. The methods of survey and in-depth interview were used to elicit the contexts of data discovery within the information-seeking processes of 17 purposively sampled participants. Our findings suggest that researchers use a diverse set of selection criteria to assess the relevance and usability of datasets depending on the search contexts. We identified shared data attributes, and the information considered most important in properly selecting or using a dataset. We have examined the relationships between different contexts of data discovery and their respective selection criteria. Our findings show that it is crucial to prioritize the information needs of users when selecting and using datasets. Data repositories need to specify their system design objectives in line with meeting user information needs. This could be achieved by enhancing the index and search interface with data variables, such as clinical metrics of outcome measures and methods, thereby making it easier for users to select and use datasets that align with their research needs.

  • The globalizability of temporal discounting
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nature Human Behaviour. - : Springer Nature. - 2397-3374. ; 6:10, s. 1386-1397
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Economic inequality is associated with preferences for smaller, immediate gains over larger, delayed ones. Such temporal discounting may feed into rising global inequality, yet it is unclear whether it is a function of choice preferences or norms, or rather the absence of sufficient resources for immediate needs. It is also not clear whether these reflect true differences in choice patterns between income groups. We tested temporal discounting and five intertemporal choice anomalies using local currencies and value standards in 61 countries (N = 13,629). Across a diverse sample, we found consistent, robust rates of choice anomalies. Lower-income groups were not significantly different, but economic inequality and broader financial circumstances were clearly correlated with population choice patterns. Ruggeri et al. find in a study of 61 countries that temporal discounting patterns are globally generalizable. Worse financial environments, greater inequality and high inflation are associated with extreme or inconsistent long-term decisions.
