  • Access to Nature via Virtual Reality : A Mini-Review
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Psychology. - : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 1664-1078. ; 12
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nature exposure is known to promote physical and mental health. However, actual nature exposure may be difficult to achieve for the population of people with physical disabilities or chronic conditions. Therefore, many attempts have been made to duplicate nature exposure via media devices, and virtual reality (VR) is deemed as a promising technology due to its advantage in creating a sense of immersion. Generally, current studies suggest that being exposed to virtual nature may contribute to psychological and physiological relaxation. Besides, some pieces of evidence indicate that virtual nature may improve attentional resources, cognitive performance, and pain experience. Although VR is deemed as an advanced media, insufficient evidence was found concerning the advantages of VR over traditional two-dimensional media when it comes to simulated nature exposure. On the other hand, computer-generated (CG) scenarios were found to be more beneficial than 360° videos, and mini-games may be useful in creating an interactive VR format for simulated nature exposure. Further research is needed because of the limited relevant studies.

  • Potential protection of computer gaming against mental health issues : Evidence from a Mendelian randomization study
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Computers in human behavior. - : Elsevier. - 0747-5632 .- 1873-7692. ; 144
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Computer gaming may negatively impact mental health. To mitigate the inherent defects of the existing observational studies, we employed the Mendelian randomization (MR) design to examine the role of computer gaming on mental health issues using large-scale genome-wide association study (GWAS) data. A computer gaming and four mental health issue datasets were obtained from UK-Biobank and FinnGen respectively. We evaluated the causal effects using inverse variance weighted (IVW), weighted median, and MR-Egger estimators, followed by a series of sensitivity analyses. We found no distinctive results under a Bonferroni-corrected significance level (p < 0.013). Nevertheless, we observed suggestive evidence in IVW estimations supporting the causal effects of computer gaming on depression medication consumption (OR = 0.579; 95%CI: 0.347-0.996; p = 0.036) and anxiety disorders (OR = 0.471; 95%CI: 0.246-0.903, p = 0.023). Our findings indicate a potential protective effect of computer gaming against mental health issues, which underscores the bright sides of computer gaming, and also offers insights into the health promotion strategies based on digital interventions. Given our limitations, we call for future research to re-examine our findings and explore underlying mechanisms.

  • Effects of an Innovative Training Program for New Graduate Registered Nurses : A Comparison Study
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: SAGE Open. - : SAGE Open. - 2158-2440. ; 11:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • New graduate registered nurses (NGRNs) face a great challenge during the transition from school to clinical practice. We conducted a quasi-randomized controlled study to evaluate the effects of a new training mode for newly recruited NGRNs in a Chinese teaching hospital. A total of 150 NGRNs were recruited from a teaching hospital and assigned into two groups. The conventional training and a new training program were taken for the control group and the research group, respectively. At the end of the training, the two groups were evaluated and compared for theoretical knowledge and operation skills using a mutual-evaluation examination and the Chinese Registered Nurse Core Competency Scale. The scores of theoretical knowledge (88.4 vs. 81.7, p < .001) and operation skills (94.8 vs. 90.3, p < .001), and the total core competencies score (156.2 vs. 148.8, p < .05) in the research group were statistically significantly higher than those in the control group. Compared with the control group, the research group also had statistically significantly higher scores in education and consultation (2.47 vs. 2.40), clinical nursing (2.87 vs. 2.62), interpersonal relationship (2.56 vs. 2.43), and critical thinking and scientific research (2.78 vs. 2.61). The innovative pre-job training program for NGRNs conducted in Chinese clinical nursing skill training bases might significantly improve the training effects and is worthy of broader implementation.

  • Development of the ASHRAE Global Thermal Comfort Database II
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Building and Environment. - : Elsevier BV. - 0360-1323. ; 142, s. 502-512
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recognizing the value of open-source research databases in advancing the art and science of HVAC, in 2014 the ASHRAE Global Thermal Comfort Database II project was launched under the leadership of University of California at Berkeley's Center for the Built Environment and The University of Sydney's Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) Laboratory. The exercise began with a systematic collection and harmonization of raw data from the last two decades of thermal comfort field studies around the world. The ASHRAE Global Thermal Comfort Database II (Comfort Database), now an online, open-source database, includes approximately 81,846 complete sets of objective indoor climatic observations with accompanying “right-here-right-now” subjective evaluations by the building occupants who were exposed to them. The database is intended to support diverse inquiries about thermal comfort in field settings. A simple web-based interface to the database enables filtering on multiple criteria, including building typology, occupancy type, subjects' demographic variables, subjective thermal comfort states, indoor thermal environmental criteria, calculated comfort indices, environmental control criteria and outdoor meteorological information. Furthermore, a web-based interactive thermal comfort visualization tool has been developed that allows end-users to quickly and interactively explore the data.

  • Organizational coordination in sustainable humanitarian supply chain: an evolutionary game approach
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cleaner Production. - : Elsevier BV. - 0959-6526 .- 1879-1786. ; 219, s. 291-303
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sustainable humanitarian supply chain has a great impact on saving lives, decreasing human suffering and contributing to development. Organizational coordination plays an important role in it, although it is uncommon to be established due to the conflicting interests and expectations. To cope with the problem and achieve the sustainability of humanitarian supply chain, the coordination between private sector and humanitarian organization was further discussed with the help of sustainable principle regarding stakeholder approach. Different from the existing literature that elaborated the drivers and the advantages of coordination, this paper aims to explore the coordination mechanism regarding whether to coordinate, when to adopt the optimal coordinated strategy and how such a strategy can perform well. To analyze the tendency of the coordinated decisions, evolutionary game models concerning traditional and trust mechanisms were developed. Then, computational studies based on hypothetic data were simulated to validate the effectiveness of the proposed model. Results indicated that the coordination decision was affected by coordinated returns and costs, normal returns and extra returns in terms of the traditional mechanism. Several situations in regard to the coordinated decisions were analyzed by adopting evolutionary stable strategies. Moreover, trust had a significantly positive impact on coordination promotion under the support of potential returns and high-level trust. Finally, managerial insights for achieving the sustainable humanitarian supply chain were given from the perspective of organizational coordination and strategy.

  • Evaluating assumptions of scales for subjective assessment of thermal environments – Do laypersons perceive them the way, we researchers believe?
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Energy and Buildings. - : Elsevier BV. - 0378-7788. ; 211
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • People's subjective response to any thermal environment is commonly investigated by using rating scales describing the degree of thermal sensation, comfort, and acceptability. Subsequent analyses of results collected in this way rely on the assumption that specific distances between verbal anchors placed on the scale exist and that relationships between verbal anchors from different dimensions that are assessed (e.g. thermal sensation and comfort) do not change. Another inherent assumption is that such scales are independent of the context in which they are used (climate zone, season, etc.). Despite their use worldwide, there is indication that contextual differences influence the way the scales are perceived and therefore question the reliability of the scales’ interpretation. To address this issue, a large international collaborative questionnaire study was conducted in 26 countries, using 21 different languages, which led to a dataset of 8225 questionnaires. Results, analysed by means of robust statistical techniques, revealed that only a subset of the responses are in accordance with the mentioned assumptions. Significant differences appeared between groups of participants in their perception of the scales, both in relation to distances of the anchors and relationships between scales. It was also found that respondents’ interpretations of scales changed with contextual factors, such as climate, season, and language. These findings highlight the need to carefully consider context-dependent factors in interpreting and reporting results from thermal comfort studies or post-occupancy evaluations, as well as to revisit the use of rating scales and the analysis methods used in thermal comfort studies to improve their reliability.

  • Contraceptive use and reproductive intentions among women requesting contraceptive counseling
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0001-6349 .- 1600-0412. ; 97:11, s. 1349-1357
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: Limited attention has been paid to the use of contraception in relation to women's family planning intentions. The aim of this study was to investigate the use of contraception during the most recent intercourse as well as the reproductive intentions of Swedish-speaking women requesting contraceptive counseling.Material and methods: Across-sectional baseline survey in a randomized controlled trial regarding reproductive life planning (before randomization). Women requesting contraceptive counseling answered questions about contraception and whether they wanted to have children/more children in the future. Results: In total, 1946 women participated: 33.7% (n = 656) parous and 65.7% (n = 1279) nulliparous. The majority, 87.1% (n = 1682), had used contraception during their latest intercourse; 64.6% (n = 1239) used short-acting reversible contraception, 22.8% (n = 443) used long-acting reversible contraception (LARC), and 12.9% (n = 251) had not used any contraception. A combined oral contraceptive was more common among nulliparous and LARC among parous. Among all women, 64.8% (n = 1253) intended to have children/more children in the future, among parous women 35.7% (n = 220) and among nulliparous 80.0% (n = 1033). Among women who did not intend to have children/more children, 22.6% (n = 60) of parous and 10% (n = 8) of nulliparous had not used contraceptives during their most recent intercourse. Conclusions: Women did not always use contraceptives that were suitable for their reproductive intentions. Questioning women who request contraceptive counseling about their pregnancy intention can give healthcare providers better opportunities for individualized counseling.

  • Chinese Citizen Satisfaction with Government Performance during COVID-19
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Contemporary China. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1067-0564 .- 1469-9400. ; 30:132, s. 930-944
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While foreign pundits have alternatively blamed and praised the Chinese government’s handling of the COVID-19 virus, little is known about how citizens within China understand this performance. This article considers how satisfied Chinese citizens are with their government’s performance during the COVID-19 pandemic. It first considers the impact of authoritarian control, political culture, and/or actual government performance on citizen satisfaction. Then, it tests the consequences of satisfaction and specifically whether citizen satisfaction leads to greater trust. Analyzing data from the first post-COVID survey of its kind (n = 19,816) conducted from April 22 to 28 April 2020, the authors find that Chinese citizens have an overall high level of satisfaction, but that this satisfaction drops with each lower level of government. Further, authoritarian control, political culture, and awareness of government performance all contribute to citizen satisfaction and this in turn, has enhanced public support for the Chinese government.

  • Innovations in science, technology, engineering, and policy (iSTEP) for addressing environmental issues towards sustainable development
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: The Innovation Geoscience. - : Innovation Press. - 2959-8753. ; 2:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sustainable development depends on the integration of the economy, society, and environment. Yet, escalating environmental challenges pose threats to both society and the economy. Despite progress in addressing environmental issues to promote sustainability, knowledge gaps in scientific research, technological advancement, engineering practice, and policy development persist. In this review, we aim to narrow these gaps by proposing innovation-based solutions and refining existing paradigms. Reviewing past research and actions, we first elucidate the evolution of sustainability science and the essence of sustainable development and its assessment. Secondly, we summarize current major environmental issues, including global warming and climate change, biodiversity loss, land degradation and desertification, and environmental pollution, as well as their relationships with sustainability and the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Subsequently, this review critically evaluates the role of innovations in science, technology, engineering, and policy (iSTEP) and their synergies in advancing sustainability and SDGs. While their sequential relationships may vary based on specific contexts or sustainability scenarios within the iSTEP framework, each component reinforces the others, fostering continuous improvement. Finally, this review offers recommendations and future perspectives for formulating sustainability roadmaps. Recommendations include fostering a vision of sustainability, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration, and encouraging transboundary cooperation among stakeholders for future sustainability endeavors.
