  • Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density

    • Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data.

    • Oriented arrangement of single crystals plays devices. Herein we describe a method for the exceptionally single crystals (several centimeters). It combines an induced nucleation step with a continuous withdrawal of substrate, leading to specific evaporation/composition conditions at a three-phase contact line, which makes the growth process controllable. These aligned dipeptide fibers possess a uniform cross section with active optical waveguiding properties that can be used as waveguiding materials. The approach provides guidance for the controlled arrangement of organic single crystals, a family of materials with considerable potential applications in large-scale functional devices.

    • The aim of this paper is to evaluate the injury risk of child occupant exposed to the deployed side airbag in side impact. Based on the Prescribed Structure Motion, LS-Dyna and MADYMO softwares was used to develop the simulation models. Simulations with and without side airbag deployment were carried out under the Euro-NCAP side impact conditions. The dynamic response parameters of head, neck and thorax of 6-year-old child with misusing and using correctly booster seat were analyzed and compared. The results indicated that the child misusing booster seat may not receive the threat of side airbag for head and thorax. The child using booster seat correctly may receive the protective benefits of side airbag for head and thorax. Whether a child misuses or uses correctly booster seat, the injury risk of neck depends on the real impact situations.

  • Jointly estimating the most likely driving paths and destination locations with incomplete vehicular trajectory data

    • With an ever-increasing deployment density of probe and fixed sensors, massive vehicular trajectory data is available and show a promising foundation to improve the observability of dynamic traffic demand pattern. However, due to technical and privacy issues, the raw trajectories are not always complete and the paths and destinations between discontinuous trajectory nodes are usually missing. This paper proposes a probabilistic method to jointly reconstruct the missing driving path and destination location of vehicles with incomplete trajectory data. One problem-specific HMM-structured model incorporating spatial and temporal analysis (ST-HMM) is constructed to define the matching probability between observed data and possible movement. Two algorithms, namely candidate set generation and best-match search algorithms, are developed to seek the most possible one as matching result. It can implement end-to-end processing from incomplete trajectory data to complete and connective paths and destinations for the target vehicle. The proposed method is tested based on field-test data and city-wide road network. Compared with two benchmark methods, the proposed method improved the matching accuracy in terms of both path identification and destination inference. Additionally, sensitivity analyses on the size of training dataset and candidate set were performed. We believe that experiment results of these sensitivity analyses can help to provide guidance on data sensing and candidate generation.

  • Crystal electric field splitting and f -electron hybridization in heavy-fermion CePt2In7

    • We use high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to investigate the electronic structure of the antiferromagnetic heavy fermion compound CePt2In7, which is a member of the CeIn3-derived heavy fermion material family. Weak hybridization among 4f electron states and conduction bands was identified in CePt2In7 at low temperature much weaker than that in the other heavy fermion compounds like CeIrIn5 and CeRhIn5. The Ce 4f spectrum shows fine structures near the Fermi energy, reflecting the crystal electric field splitting of the 4f5/21 and 4f7/21 states. Also, we find that the Fermi surface has a strongly three-dimensional topology, in agreement with density-functional theory calculations.  © 2019 American Physical Society.

  • Modeling drivers’ scrambling behavior in China: An application of theory of planned behavior

    • Scrambling behavior is one of the main causes of road traffic accidents in China. This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of drivers’ scrambling behavior and its influencing factors based on the theory of planned behavior. A total of 388 drivers answered the questionnaire and 359 provided valid data. The structure equation model of scrambling behavior showed that positive attitudes towards scrambling behavior, subjective norms and perceived behavior control increased the intention of scrambling behavior. Furthermore, the path coefficient of the structural equation model for the scrambling behavior revealed that attitude was the most important factor influencing scrambling behavior. Thus, to prevent drivers from scrambling, traffic regulators should focus on improving drivers’ attitude towards this behavior, while auxiliary measures should be enacted to regulate drivers' subjective norms and perceptual behavior control. Implications on intervention strategy and policy to reduce scrambling behavior are discussed.

  • The 4f-Hybridization Strength in CemMnIn3m+2n Heavy-Fermion Compounds Studied by Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy

    • We systemically investigate the nature of Ce 4f electrons in structurally layered heavy-fermion compounds CemMnIn3m+2n (with M = Co, Rh, Jr, and Pt, m = 1, 2, n = 0-2), at low temperature using on-resonance angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Three heavy quasiparticle bands f(0), f(7/2)(1) and f(5/2)(1), are observed in all compounds, whereas their intensities and energy locations vary greatly with materials. The strong f(0) states imply that the localized electron behavior dominates the Ce 4f states. The Ce 4f electrons are partially hybridized with the conduction electrons, making them have the dual nature of localization and itinerancy. Our quantitative comparison reveals that the f(5/2)(1)-f (0) intensity ratio is more suitable to reflect the 4f-state hybridization strength.

    • Magnesium oxychloride cement (MOC) has been considered as a kind of eco-friendly cement in view of its significantly low calcination temperature and large capacity of carbon dioxide sequestration, compared with ordinary Portland cement (OPC). In this work, a computer model is established to simulate the hydration and leaching of MOC paste at the micro-scale. The composition of MOC paste in the ultimate hydration is investigated based on the thermodynamic method, and pore structure obtained from the computer simulation is compared with the one from experiments and literature, respectively. The simulated leaching results show that the original solid phase skeleton of MOC paste decomposes into magnesium hydroxide crystals. It is demonstrated that the simulation results are in good agreement with experimental data from literature and the proposed simulation can provide an effective method to reveal the hydration and leaching mechanism of MOC paste.
