  • The Scales Project, a cross-national dataset on the interpretation of thermal perception scales
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Scientific data. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2052-4463. ; 6:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Thermal discomfort is one of the main triggers for occupants' interactions with components of the built environment such as adjustments of thermostats and/or opening windows and strongly related to the energy use in buildings. Understanding causes for thermal (dis-)comfort is crucial for design and operation of any type of building. The assessment of human thermal perception through rating scales, for example in post-occupancy studies, has been applied for several decades; however, long-existing assumptions related to these rating scales had been questioned by several researchers. The aim of this study was to gain deeper knowledge on contextual influences on the interpretation of thermal perception scales and their verbal anchors by survey participants. A questionnaire was designed and consequently applied in 21 language versions. These surveys were conducted in 57 cities in 30 countries resulting in a dataset containing responses from 8225 participants. The database offers potential for further analysis in the areas of building design and operation, psycho-physical relationships between human perception and the built environment, and linguistic analyses.

  • Stones and the Destabilisation of Safe Ethical Space
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Periskop. - 0908-6919. ; 2020:24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article investigates the role of ethical boundaries for the academic and the artist/researcher in stabilising or destabilising colonialised positions of power. It stems from an increasingly urgent need to understand how the exclusion of pluralistic knowledge production continues in professional contexts and how this supports supremacist structural power imbalances.

  • Development of contrastive-partitive in colloquial Persian A grammaticalization from possessive =eš
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Language Typology and Universals. - : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 1867-8319 .- 2196-7148. ; 73:4, s. 575-604
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article discusses the development of the contrastive-partitive function of the possessive =eš in colloquial Persian. Examples of colloquial Persian show that the third person singular clitic pronoun =eš in some adnominal possessive constructions does not refer to any obvious referent present either in the syntactic structure (co-text) or in the situational context. Instead, the function of =eš, namely contrastive-partitive, is to mark the host as a part and contrast it with other parts of the similar set. The same function is attested in a few languages of Uralic and Turkic group. We believe that the same development has been occurred in possessive =eš in Persian. To describe the process of the development of the contrastive-partitive function, authentic colloquial examples from Internet blogs and formal examples from a historical corpus of New Persian are investigated. It is argued that this non-possessive function of =eš has originated from the whole-part relation in cross-referencing possessives, where both the lexical and clitical possessor =eš are present. The presence of the lexical possessor facilitates the loss of referentiality in =eš and it is developed to denote partitivity. Furthermore, the pragmatic motivation of communicating contrast makes =eš to be further grammaticalized into denoting contrastive-partitive function.

  • Eutopia - Researchers’ workshop: Transformative and Experimental Knowledge for Change, Structural Strategies for Decolonising Education
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Eutopia Research Platform.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This session aims to address the multiple structural transformations necessary to facilitate institutional changes for more inclusive education. Promoting inclusion requires a three-tiered approach to shift the historical power-knowledge relations that make universities inaccessible to many across society for a number of reasons: race, class, language, socio-economic factors and cultural-geopolitical entanglements amongst others. In the discussion we will address the specificities of the curricula in its specific socio-political context. The focus is on the three-tiers and how to approach the transformations necessary to attend to the curricula elisions that exclude certain forms of knowledge and experiences. The workshop will invite participants to consider how curricula is not only connected to student recruitment and faculty appointments but to the institutional structures that have to provide the support to facilitate transformations that de-segregate and make higher education more accessible.

  • Action Recognition Online with Hierarchical Self-Organizing Maps
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 12th International Conference on Signal Image Technology & Internet-Based Systems : SITIS 2016. Proceedings. - SITIS 2016. Proceedings.. - 9781509056989 ; , s. 538-544
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a hierarchical self-organizing map based system for online recognition of human actions. We have made a first evaluation of our system by training it on two different sets of recorded human actions, one set containing manner actions and one set containing result actions, and then tested it by letting a human performer carry out the actions online in real time in front of the system’s 3D-camera. The system successfully recognized more than 94% of the manner actions and most of the result actions carried out by the human performer.

  • Attention control learning in the decision space using state estimation
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Systems Science. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0020-7721 .- 1464-5319. ; 47:7, s. 1659-1674
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The main goal of this paper is modelling attention while using it in efficient path planning of mobile robots. The key challenge in concurrently aiming these two goals is how to make an optimal, or near-optimal, decision in spite of time and processing power limitations, which inherently exist in a typical multi-sensor real-world robotic application. To efficiently recognise the environment under these two limitations, attention of an intelligent agent is controlled by employing the reinforcement learning framework. We propose an estimation method using estimated mixture-of-experts task and attention learning in perceptual space. An agent learns how to employ its sensory resources, and when to stop observing, by estimating its perceptual space. In this paper, static estimation of the state space in a learning task problem, which is examined in the WebotsTM simulator, is performed. Simulation results show that a robot learns how to achieve an optimal policy with a controlled cost by estimating the state space instead of continually updating sensory information.

  • Microscopic and microanalytical study on Sasanian metal objects from Western Iran: A case study
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Science and Technology of Archaeological Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2054-8923. ; 3:2, s. 194-205
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent archaeological excavation in western Iran discovered a Sasanian palace called Ghaleh Guri (Qela Gowri) beside of the Seimarreh River. As part of the archaeometric studies on the site, five metallic objects (a coin, a disc, a vessel, a decorated strip and some pieces with no specific function) were sampled and analysed using OM and SEM-EDS to determine alloy composition and microstructure. The results showed that strip is made of copper, disc, vessel and unidentifiable object are tin bronze and the coin is made of silver-copper alloy. Tin content in the vessel is about 30 wt% and may be classified as high-tin bronze. The microstructure of samples also revealed that the amount of working and the heat treatment was variable, most likely due to their different compositions.

  • Le retentissement de la poésie de Hâfez en France – Réception et traduction
  • 2001
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • One of Persia’s most popular poets ever is the fourteenth century born Hafez. The present dissertation deals with the reception of his work in France, mainly through French translations of his poetry. The aim of the first part of this study is to give a background to the study of the French translations of Hafez’ work by pointing out the cultural and historical situation of the epoch at the time the poet lived and the degree of familiarity with the author in the receptor country. After a description of the fourteenth century’s situation in France we try to find the first references and acknowledgements of Persia and Hafez in France through a study of important travellers’ journals. Thereafter we glance at the first translations into the European languages including French. Through an inter-textual study, the dissertation sets out to discover whether the themes of the translated poems have any resemblance with the themes portrayed by the French authors. This procedure permits us to recognise why a translator chose one specific poem and not another. Before Hafez found his place in French literature, the Orient and Persia had already been described in French literature. Periodicals and articles give information on the reception of the poet from the eighteenth to the twentieth century and this information is valuable for the understanding of the translations. The second part of the dissertation gives a survey of the French translations from the eighteenth to the twentieth century. Antoine Berman’s model is used in order to obtain a clear image of the translator and his translation project. More concrete information was obtained from a questionnaire, which was sent to French contemporary translators. Finding out that none of the translators from the eighteenth to the twentieth century had translated the complete work of Hafez, we tried to find the possible reasons for this delay and to illustrate the obstacles, which prevented them from translating the entire work.Working from a hermeneutic perspective and the analytical process proposed by A. Berman, the aim of the third part is a comparative and an evolutionary study of the two most important themes in Hafez’ work, love and wine. Our main interest is to examine thematic differences firstly between an original text and its translation and secondly between the various translations of the same text. This part of the dissertation focuses on the ten most translated poems and the variations in the translation of the themes through the centuries. We see these differences as the result of different approaches to translation. It is obvious that an exact interpretation and translation of Hafez is only possible if the translator – and the public – understand the culture and the neo-platonic tradition which affected his work. This dissertation shows that through time, translators have come closer to the spirit of Hafez’ work. The first translation of the entire work, by C.–H. de Fouchécour, is an important step in this direction. With this progress in the interpretation and translation of Hafez’ work a new light will be projected upon the image of the fourteenth century poet leading to a greater awareness of Hafez in France.
