  • Chinese Medicine as Boundary Object(s) : Examining TCM's Integration into International Science Through the Case of Australian--Chinese Research Collaboration
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: East Asian Science, Technology and Society. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1875-2160 .- 1875-2152.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite being defined in the West as alternative medicine and often seen as incommensurable with biomedicine and bioscience, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has, paradoxically, assimilated into dominant spaces of knowledge production and legitimation, such as the International Classification of Diseases. In Australia, TCM comprises a designated area of cooperation with China, and TCM research is carried out in numerous universities by otherwise mainstream scientists. Focusing on the Australian case, we examine how and why TCM has transcended scientific skepticism to become an object of scientific study. Through interviews with Australian TCM researchers (n = 10), we identify aspects of TCM that function as conceptual and material boundary objects, facilitating its uptake in bioscientific disciplines. Furthermore, we locate TCM research in the wider context of Australian-Chinese knowledge exchange, highlighting the role of "coordinating boundary objects," such as institutional agreements, in enabling scientific work, as well as the supportive role performed by boundary actors who translate across social worlds. By illustrating how these objects/actors enact TCM research in Australia, as well as their interdependence, the paper contributes a deeper understanding of the operation of boundary objects in international scientific collaboration and the factors determining the scientific success of this alternative medicine.

  • Highly stable and efficient all-inorganic lead-free perovskite solar cells with native-oxide passivation
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 2041-1723. ; 10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There has been an urgent need to eliminate toxic lead from the prevailing halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs), but the current lead-free PSCs are still plagued with the critical issues of low efficiency and poor stability. This is primarily due to their inadequate photovoltaic properties and chemical stability. Herein we demonstrate the use of the lead-free, all-inorganic cesium tin-germanium triiodide (CsSn(0.5)Ge(0.5)l(3)) solid-solution perovskite as the light absorber in PSCs, delivering promising efficiency of up to 7.11%. More importantly, these PSCs show very high stability, with less than 10% decay in efficiency after 500 h of continuous operation in N-2 atmosphere under one-sun illumination. The key to this striking performance of these PSCs is the formation of a full-coverage, stable native-oxide layer, which fully encapsulates and passivates the perovskite surfaces. The native-oxide passivation approach reported here represents an alternate avenue for boosting the efficiency and stability of lead-free PSCs.

  • Effects of adsorbed molecular ordering to the superconductivity of a two-dimensional atomic layer crystal
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Materials. - : American Physical Society. - 2475-9953. ; 7:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effect of 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA) adsorption on the physical properties of the two-dimensional (2D) atomic layer superconductor (ALSC) In/Si(111)-(7×3) has been studied by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, transport measurements, and scanning tunneling microscopy. Hole doping from the adsorbed molecules has been reported to increase the superconducting transition temperature Tc of this ALSC, and the molecular spin tends to decrease it. Owing to its large electron affinity and its nonexistent spin state, the adsorption of PTCDA was expected to increase Tc. However, the PTCDA adsorption dopes only a small number of holes in the In layers and causes a suppression of Tc with a sharp increase in the normal-state sheet resistance followed by an insulating transition. Taking the disordering of the arrangement of PTCDA into account, we conclude that the increase in resistance is due to the localization effect originating from the random potential that is induced by the disordered PTCDA molecules. The present result also indicates the importance of the crystallinity of a 2D molecular film adsorbed on ALSCs.

  • An experimental and theoretical study of an efficient polymer nano-photocatalyst for hydrogen evolution
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Energy & Environmental Science. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 1754-5692 .- 1754-5706. ; 10:6, s. 1372-1376
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this work, we report a highly efficient organic polymer nano-photocatalyst for light driven proton reduction. The system renders an initial rate of hydrogen evolution up to 50 +/- 0.5 mmol g(-1) h(-1), which is the fastest rate among all other reported organic photocatalysts. We also experimentally and theoretically prove that the nitrogen centre of the benzothiadiazole unit plays a crucial role in the photocatalysis and that the Pdots structure holds a close to ideal geometry to enhance the photocatalysis.

  • Nanoscale structural damage due to focused ion beam milling of silicon with Ga-ions
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Materials letters (General ed.). - : Elsevier. - 0167-577X .- 1873-4979. ; 213, s. 346-349
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The exposure of sample to Focused Ion Beam leads to Ga-ion implantation, damage, material amorphisation, and the introduction of sources of residual stress; namely eigenstrain. In this study we employ synchrotron X-ray Reflectivity technique to characterise the amorphous layer generated in a single crystal Silicon sample by exposure to Ga-ion beam. The thickness, density and interface roughness of the amorphous layer were extracted from the analysis of the reflectivity curve. The outcome is compared with the eigenstrain profile evaluated from residual stress analysis by Molecular Dynamics and TEM imaging reported in the literature. (c) 2017 Elsevier B.V. • Impact of local Si segregation on strain localization in ductile cast iron
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: IOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering. - : Institute of Physics Publishing (IOPP).
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The distribution of Si content in tensile deformed ductile cast iron has been characterized using electron microscopy and correlated to the strain distribution determined based on 3D tomography data collected before and after tensile deformation and digital volume correlation analysis. The results show that the high plastic strain regions localize in bands consisting of large graphite nodules and deformed matrix with high Si content connecting the graphite nodules in the first-to-solidify regions. The bands are aligned about 45° with respect to the loading direction, which is close to the maximum shear direction.
