  • De Novo Design of Spiro-Type Hole-Transporting Material: Anisotropic Regulation Toward Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

    • 2,2′,7,7′-Tetrakis(N,N-di-p-methoxyphenyl)-amine-9,9′-spirobifluorene (Spiro-OMeTAD) represents the state-of-the-art hole-transporting material (HTM) in n-i-p perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, its susceptibility to stability issues has been a long-standing concern. In this study, we embark on a comprehensive exploration of the untapped potential within the family of spiro-type HTMs using an innovative anisotropic regulation strategy. Diverging from conventional approaches that can only modify spirobifluorene with single functional group, this approach allows us to independently tailor the two orthogonal components of the spiro-skeleton at the molecular level. The newly designed HTM, SF-MPA-MCz, features enhanced thermal stability, precise energy level alignment, superior film morphology, and optimized interfacial properties when compared to Spiro-OMeTAD, which contribute to a remarkable power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 24.53% for PSCs employing SF-MPA-MCz with substantially improved thermal stability and operational stability. Note that the optimal concentration for SF-MPA-MCz solution is only 30 mg/ml, significantly lower than Spiro-OMeTAD (>70 mg/ml), which could remarkably reduce the cost especially for large-area processing in future commercialization. This work presents a promising avenue for the versatile design of multifunctional HTMs, offering a blueprint for achieving efficient and stable PSCs.

  • Effect of Build Direction on Fatigue Performance of L-PBF 316L Stainless Steel

    • The microstructure and fatigue and tensile properties of 316L stainless steel fabricated via laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) were investigated. Two 316L stainless steel specimens with different loading directions which are either perpendicular to or parallel to building direction were prepared by L-PBF process. The results of X-ray diffraction tomography showed that there was no significant difference in morphology and size/distribution of the defects in the HB and VB samples. Since long axis of columnar grains is generally parallel to the build direction, the fatigue crack encounters more grain boundaries in VB samples under cyclic loading, which led to enhanced fatigue resistance of VB samples compared with HB sample. In contrast to HB sample, the VB sample has a higher fatigue strength due to a higher resistance to localized plastic deformation under cyclic loading. The differences in fatigue properties of L-PBF 316L SS with different build directions were predominantly controlled by solidification microstructures.

  • Analysis of the stress field in the reactor vessel of the China Initiative Accelerator Driven System during postulated ULOF and UTOP transients

    • The China Initiative Accelerator Driven System (CiADS) was proposed by China Academy of Science since 2015. The subcritical reactor in CiADS is a liquid Lead Bismuth Eutectic (LBE) cooled fast reactor. When the reactor core is in operation, the LBE coolant will directly contact and corrode the inner surface of reactor vessel. Due to the high temperature, the corrosion will be more severe. If the stress on the reactor vessel exceeds the limit, the plastic deformation will occur, leading to the generation and expansion of defects and cracks, and the safety of the reactor will be affected. Therefore, evaluating the stress field of the reactor vessel under different operating conditions is a very important research project. In this paper, the finite element analysis software ADINA was applied to analyze the reactor vessel in CiADS, and the ASME Code was used as stress assessment standards. We can preliminarily prove that the stress assessments of the vessel during the postulated Unprotected Loss of Flow (ULOF) accidents satisfy the requirements of ASME Code. The limit reactivity insertion to protect the vessel from plastic deformation is 0.58$ in the postulated Unprotected Transient over Power (UTOP) accidents based on our current results. Therefore, we can preliminarily conclude that the current material selection and structural design of the reactor vessel in CiADS could survive most of the postulated transient accidents considering the stress effect.

  • Development and applicability analyses of ADS-4 entrainment model in large advanced PWR

    • Two new models of liquid entrainment through a vertical tee branch are proposed based on theoretical analyses and experimental data, which can well predict the test results of the prototype facility of CAP1400 and the scaled down facility of AP1000. Moreover, in order to verify the applicability of the new entrainment models, these models are implemented to RELAP5 through the safety analyses with a 2 in. cold leg SBLOCA in AP1000 comparing with the original RELAP5. The contrastive results show that the RELAP5 with proposed entrainment models has more reasonable results. In addition, the modified RELAP5 can calculate less primary coolant inventory which is more conservative. Besides, the less coolant inventory is accord with the beyond design basis accident test of APEX facility (Advanced Plant Experiment). Therefore, the proposed entrainment models are more appropriate for the ADS-4 entrainment safety analyses in large advanced PWR.

  • The Importance of Pendant Groups on Triphenylamine-Based Hole Transport Materials for Obtaining Perovskite Solar Cells with over 20% Efficiency

    • Tremendous progress has recently been achieved in the field of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) as evidenced by impressive power conversion efficiencies (PCEs); but the high PCEs of >20% in PSCs has so far been mostly achieved by using the hole transport material (HTM) spiro-OMeTAD; however, the relatively low conductivity and high cost of spiro-OMeTAD significantly limit its potential use in large-scale applications. In this work, two new organic molecules with spiro[fluorene-9,9-xanthene] (SFX)-based pendant groups, X26 and X36, have been developed as HTMs. Both X26 and X36 present facile syntheses with high yields. It is found that the introduced SFX pendant groups in triphenylamine-based molecules show significant influence on the conductivity, energy levels, and thin-film surface morphology. The use of X26 as HTM in PSCs yields a remarkable PCE of 20.2%. In addition, the X26-based devices show impressive stability maintaining a high PCE of 18.8% after 5 months of aging in controlled (20%) humidity in the dark. We believe that X26 with high device PCEs of >20% and simple synthesis show a great promise for future application in PSCs, and that it represents a useful design platform for designing new charge transport materials for optoelectronic applications.

  • A flow-rate-aware data-driven model of vanadium redox flow battery based on gated recurrent unit neural network

    • The vanadium redox flow battery (VRB) system involves complex multi-physical and multi-timescale interactions, where the electrolyte flow rate plays a pivotal role in both static and dynamic performance. Traditionally, fixed flow rates have been employed for operational convenience. However, in today's highly dynamic energy market environment, adjusting flow rates based on operating conditions can provide significant advantages for improving VRB energy conversion efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Unfortunately, incorporating the electrolyte flow rate into conventional multi-physical models is overly complex for VRB management and control systems, as real-time operations demand low-computational and low-complexity models for onboard functionalities. This paper introduces a novel data-driven approach that integrates flow rates into VRB modeling, enhancing data processing capabilities and prediction accuracy of VRB behaviors. The proposed model adopts a gated recurrent unit (GRU) neural network as its fundamental framework, exhibiting exceptional proficiency in capturing VRB's nonlinear voltage segments. The GRU network structure is carefully designed to optimize the predictive ability of the model, with flow rate considered as a crucial input parameter to account for its influence on VRB behavior. Model refinement involves analyzing well-designed simulation results obtained during VRB operations under various flow rates. Laboratory experiments were also designed and conducted, covering different conditions of currents and flow rates to validate the proposed data-driven modeling method. Comparative analyses were performed against several state-of-the-art algorithms, including equivalent circuit models and other data-driven models, demonstrating the superiority of the proposed GRU-based VRB model considering flow rates. Thanks to the GRU's outstanding capability in processing time series data, the proposed model delivers impressively accurate terminal voltage predictions with a low error margin of no more than 0.023 V (1.3%) under wide operating ranges. These results indicate the efficacy and robustness of the proposed approach, highlighting the novelty and significance of accounting for flow rates in accurate VRB modeling for management and control system design.

    • In this paper, InGaAs p-i-n photodetectors (PDs) on an InP/SiO2/Si (InPOI) substrate fabricated by ion-slicing technology are demonstrated and compared with the identical device on a commercial InP substrate. The quality of epitaxial layers on the InPOI substrate is similar to that on the InP substrate. The photo responsivities of both devices measured at 1.55 µm are comparable, which are about 0.808–0.828 A W−1. Although the dark current of PD on the InPOI substrate is twice as high as that of PD on the InP substrate at 300 K, the peak detectivities of both PDs are comparable. In general, the overall performance of the InPOI-based PD is comparable to the InP-based PD, demonstrating that the ion-slicing technology is a promising route to enable the high-quality Si-based InP platform for the full photonic integration on a Si substrate.

  • Advances in understanding of health-promoting benefits of medicine and food homology using analysis of gut microbiota and metabolomics

    • The health-promoting benefits of medicine and food homology (MFH) are known for thousands of years in China. However, active compounds and biological mechanisms are unclear, greatly limiting clinical practice of MFH. The advent of gut microbiota analysis and metabolomics emerge as key tools to discover functional compounds, therapeutic targets, and mechanisms of benefits of MFH. Such studies hold great promise to promote and optimize functional efficacy and development of MFH-based products, for example, foods for daily dietary supplements or for special medical purposes. In this review, we summarized pharmacological effects of 109 species of MFH approved by the Health and Fitness Commission in 2015. Recent studies applying genome sequencing of gut microbiota and metabolomics to explain the activity of MFH in prevention and management of health consequences were extensively reviewed. We discussed the potentiality in future to decipher functional activities of MFH by applying metabolomics-based polypharmacokinetic strategy and multiomics technologies. The needs for personalized MFH recommendations and comprehensive databases have also been highlighted. This review emphasizes current achievements and challenges of the analysis of gut microbiota and metabolomics as a new avenue to understand MFH.

  • Understanding the microwave annealing of silicon

    • Though microwave annealing appears to be very appealing due to its unique features, lacking an in-depth understanding and accurate model hinder its application in semiconductor processing. In this paper, the physics-based model and accurate calculation for the microwave annealing of silicon are presented. Both thermal effects, including ohmic conduction loss and dielectric polarization loss, and non-thermal effects are thoroughly analyzed. We designed unique experiments to verify the mechanism and extract relevant parameters. We also explicitly illustrate the dynamic interaction processes of the microwave annealing of silicon. This work provides an in-depth understanding that can expedite the application of microwave annealing in semiconductor processing and open the door to implementing microwave annealing for future research and applications.

    • The Co0.33Ni0.33Mn0.33Fe2O4/graphene nanocomposite for electromagnetic wave absorption was successfully synthesized from metal chlorides solutions and graphite powder by a simple and rapid microwave-assisted polyol method via anchoring the Co0.33Ni0.33Mn0.33Fe2O4 nanoparticles on the layered graphene sheets. The Fe3+, Co2+, Ni2+ and Mn2+ ions in the solutions were attracted by graphene oxide obtained from graphite and converted to the precursors Fe(OH)(3), Co(OH)(2), Ni(OH)(2), and Mn(OH)(2) under slightly alkaline conditions. After the transformations of the precursors to Co-Ni-Mn ferrites and conversion of graphene oxide to graphene under microwave irradiation at 170 degrees C in just 25 min, the Co0.33Ni0.33Mn0.33Fe2O4/graphene nanocomposite was prepared. The composition and structure of the nanocomposite were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), inductive coupled plasma emission spectroscopy (ICP), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy (RS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), etc. It was found that with the filling ratio of only 20 wt% and the thickness of 2.3 mm, the nanocomposite showed an ultra-wide effective absorption bandwidth (less than -10 dB) of 8.48 GHz (from 9.52 to 18.00 GHz) with the minimum reflection loss of - 24.29 dB. Compared to pure graphene sheets, Co0.33Ni0.33Mn0.33Fe2O4 nano particles and the counterparts reported in literature, the nanocomposite exhibited much better electromagnetic wave absorption, mainly attributed to strong wave attenuation, as a result of synergistic effects of dielectric loss, conductive loss and magnetic loss, and to good impedance matching. In view of its thin thickness, light weight and outstanding electromagnetic wave absorption property, the nanocomposite could be used as a very promising electromagnetic wave absorber.
