  • Advanced opportunities and insights on the influence of nitrogen incorporation on the physico-/electro-chemical properties of robust electrocatalysts for electrocatalytic energy conversion
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Coordination chemistry reviews. - : Elsevier. - 0010-8545 .- 1873-3840. ; 449
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of a wide range of methods for incorporating nitrogen atoms on robust catalysts has given rise to fundamental advances in the field of energy conversion and storage. Recently, nitrogen incorporation has proven to be able to fine-tune the electron densities of exposed active sites to create high-performance electrocatalysts. The preservation of a strong interface between the local atomic coordination of nitrogen atoms on bare carbon, single metal atoms, transition metal oxides, metal chalcogenides, and MXenes during synthesis plays an important role in producing an efficient electrocatalysts. In addition, the ability of nitrogen atoms to bind with carbon or metal atoms can be influenced by processing conditions. In this regard, this review is the first comprehensive overview of the range of synthetic strategies to form nitrogen incorporated catalysts and assess their chemical, structural, physical electronic property modification and their influence on electrocatalytic ORR, OER, and HER performance. This review will describe how specific strategies have been utilized to realise effective electrocatalytic systems, including the energy conversion of nitrogen incorporated catalysts, structural coordination, and material optimization. Finally, the main challenges to be considered in future investigations in order to initiate new research efforts in this promising research area are discussed.

  • Anisotropic phonon and magnon vibration and gate-tunable optoelectronic properties of nickel thiophosphite
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: 2D Materials. - : IOP Publishing. - 2053-1583. ; 10:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Transition metal phosphorus trichalcogenides retain spin-charge coupling and lattice vibrations in different layers, which are useful for spintronic and optoelectronic devices. The phonon, magnons and excitonic properties of two-dimensional ternary nickel-phosphorus trisulfides (NiPS3) are investigated using Raman spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) study. With magnetic exchange interaction, an exotic phonon scattering degenerates the optical phonons into in-plane Ag and Bg modes. We have observed eight Raman modes with two acoustic anisotropic magnon modes (M1, M2) below the critical temperature for co-(XX), while only M1 at cross (XY) polarizations. The M1 mode is coupled with the phonon Bg mode that can survive after transition temperature. The phonon and magnon modes soften with variations in temperature, which is attributed to anharmonic phonon–phonon coupling and interlayer forces. The polarized Raman shows the two-fold and four-fold symmetry orientations of the phonon and magnon modes, respectively, which exhibit strong in-plane anisotropic phonon/magnon. The PL spectra revealed the existence of bound excitonic features and ensemble emitters in NiPS3. The robust interlayer excitation and structural stability further revealed the optothermal properties. Moreover, the fabricated field-effect transistor on NiPS3 reveals p-type semiconducting nature with an ON/OFF ratio of 5 × 106 and mobility of ∼16.34 cm2 V−1 s−1. In contrast, the rectification ratio indicates their diode characteristics. Similarly, the photocurrent is enhanced by changing the wavelength of light, which shows the potential for optoelectronics. The strong spin-charge interaction provides new insights into these materials’ magneto-optical and thermal properties for memory devices.

  • Texture of electron beam melted Ti-6Al-4V measured with neutron diffraction
  • 2020
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Texture in materials is important as it contributes to anisotropy in the bulk mechanical properties. Ti-6Al-4V built with the additive manufacturing process (AM) electron beam melting (EBM) has been found to have anisotropic mechanical properties. Therefore, this work has been performed to investigate the texture variations of EBM built Ti-6Al-4V with neutron time of flight (TOF). For the work, samples were produced with different build geometries off-set by 90 degrees. A cast sample was additionally analyzed to investigate the bulk texture of conventionally manufactured material. Microstructural characterization was performed and the cast material was found to have a coarse colony α microstructure, whereas the EBM built material had a finer basket weave microstructure. Overall, the texture of the EBM built material was found to be weak having an multiple of random distribution (MRD) index of ~1 for the α phase, whilst the cast material possessed more than twice the amount of preferred orientation i.e. MRD 2.51 for the α phase.

  • GEMv2: Multilingual NLG Benchmarking in a Single Line of Code
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 2022 Conference on Empirical Methods in Natural Language Processing: System Demonstrations. - : Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL). ; , s. 266-281
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Evaluations in machine learning rarely use the latest metrics, datasets, or human evaluation in favor of remaining compatible with prior work. The compatibility, often facilitated through leaderboards, thus leads to outdated but standardized evaluation practices. We pose that the standardization is taking place in the wrong spot. Evaluation infrastructure should enable researchers to use the latest methods and what should be standardized instead is how to incorporate these new evaluation advances. We introduce GEMv2, the new version of the Generation, Evaluation, and Metrics Benchmark which uses a modular infrastructure for dataset, model, and metric developers to benefit from each other’s work. GEMv2 supports 40 documented datasets in 51 languages, ongoing online evaluation for all datasets, and our interactive tools make it easier to add new datasets to the living benchmark.

  • Exploring the Boundaries of Connected Systems: Communications for Hard-to-Reach Areas and Extreme Conditions
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the IEEE. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 0018-9219 .- 1558-2256.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cellular communication standards have been established to ensure connectivity across most urban environments, complemented by deployment hardware and facilities tailored for city life. At the same time, numerous initiatives seek to broaden connectivity to rural and developing areas. However, with nearly half the global population still offline, there is an urgent need to drive research toward enhancing connectivity in areas and conditions that deviate from the norm. This article delves into innovative communication solutions not only for hard-to-reach and extreme environments but also introduces “hard-to-serve” areas as a crucial, yet underexplored, category within the broader spectrum of connectivity challenges. We explore the latest advancements in communication systems designed for environments subject to extreme temperatures, harsh weather, excessive dust, or even disasters such as fires. Our exploration spans the entire communication stack, covering communications on isolated islands, sparsely populated regions, mountainous terrains, and even underwater and underground settings. We highlight system architectures, hardware, materials, algorithms, and other pivotal technologies that promise to connect these challenging areas. Through case studies, we explore the application of 5G for innovative research, long range (LoRa) for audio messages and emails, LoRa wireless connections, free-space optics, communications in underwater and underground scenarios, delay-tolerant networks, satellite links, and the strategic use of shared spectrum and TV white space (TVWS) to improve mobile connectivity in secluded and remote regions. These studies also touch on prevalent challenges such as power outages, regulatory gaps, technological availability, and human resource constraints, where we introduce the concept of peri-urban hard-to-serve areas where populations might struggle with affordability or lack the skills for traditional connectivity solutions. This article provides an exhaustive summary of our research, showcasing how 6G and future networks will play a crucial role in delivering connectivity to areas that are hard-to-reach, hard-to-serve, or subject to extreme conditions (ECs).

  • Cometary dust analogues for physics experiments
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. - : Oxford University Press. - 0035-8711 .- 1365-2966. ; 515:3, s. 3420-3438
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The CoPhyLab (Cometary Physics Laboratory) project is designed to study the physics of comets through a series of earth-based experiments. For these experiments, a dust analogue was created with physical properties comparable to those of the non-volatile dust found on comets. This ‘CoPhyLab dust’ is planned to be mixed with water and CO2 ice and placed under cometary conditions in vacuum chambers to study the physical processes taking place on the nuclei of comets. In order to develop this dust analogue, we mixed two components representative for the non-volatile materials present in cometary nuclei. We chose silica dust as a representative for the mineral phase and charcoal for the organic phase, which also acts as a darkening agent. In this paper, we provide an overview of known cometary analogues before presenting measurements of eight physical properties of different mixtures of the two materials and a comparison of these measurements with known cometary values. The physical properties of interest are particle size, density, gas permeability, spectrophotometry, and mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties. We found that the analogue dust that matches the highest number of physical properties of cometary materials consists of a mixture of either 60 per cent/40 per cent or 70 per cent/30 per cent of silica dust/charcoal by mass. These best-fit dust analogue will be used in future CoPhyLab experiments.

  • Naphthenic acid corrosion characteristic and corrosion product film resistance of carbon steel and Cr5Mo low alloy steel in secondary vacuum gas oil
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Corrosion Engineering, Science and Technology. - 1478-422X .- 1743-2782. ; 51:6, s. 445-454
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although naphthenic acid corrosion (NAC) has been studied for many years, the mechanism of NAC is not fully understood. The objective of this paper is to study high-temperature NAC in secondary vacuum gas oil of an industrial crude oil vacuum distillation tower. A high-temperature autoclave was applied to conduct high-temperature corrosion test to investigate NAC behaviour of carbon steel and Cr5Mo low alloy steel at different sulphur contents and total acid numbers (TAN). The result shows that the corrosion rate of carbon steel and low alloy steel is high at low TAN and high TAN while it keeps at a low value at medium TAN. Corrosion product film on Cr5Mo low alloy steel surface is denser and more compact than that of carbon steel at high TAN. The chromium present in Cr5Mo low alloy steel plays an important role in NAC resistance by the formation of Cr7S8 film in the inner layer of the scale. Corrosion rates of the two steels in secondary vacuum gas oil are high at low TAN and high TAN, but low at medium TAN which are strange and different from previous experimental results conducted in non-industrial oil solution. A tentative explanation for this new phenomenon is also put forward.

  • The magnificent seven : A proposal for modest revision of the Van der Voo (1990) quality index
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Tectonophysics. - : Elsevier. - 0040-1951 .- 1879-3266. ; 790
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Thirty years ago, Rob Van der Voo proposed an elegant and simple system for evaluating the quality of paleomagnetic data. As a second-year Ph.D. student, the lead author remembers Rob waxing philosophical about the need to have an appropriate, but not overly rigid evaluation system. The end result was a 7-point system that assigned a (1) or (0) for any paleomagnetic result based on objective criteria. The goal was never to reject or blindly accept any particular result, but merely to indicate the degree of quality for any paleomagnetic pole. At the time, the global paleomagnetic database was burgeoning and it was deemed useful to rank older paleomagnetic results with the newer data being developed in modern laboratories. Van der Voo's, 1990 paper launched a silent revolution in paleomagnetism. Researchers began to evaluate their data against those seven criteria with the anticipation that reviewers would be similarly critical.Today, paleomagnetism is a mature science. Our methods, analyses, and results are more sophisticated than they were 30 years ago. Therefore, we feel it is appropriate to revisit the Van der Voo (1990) criteria in light of those developments. We hope to honor the intention of the original paper by keeping the criteria simple and easy to evaluate while also acknowledging the advances in science. This paper aims to update the criteria and modernize the process. We base our changes on advances in paleomagnetism and geochronology with a faithful adherence to the simplicity of the original publication. We offer the “Reliability” or “R” index as the next generation of the Van der Voo “Quality” or “Q” index. The new R-criteria evaluate seven different information items for each paleomagnetic pole including age, statistical requirements, identification of magnetic carriers, field tests, structural integrity, presence of reversals and an evaluation for possible remagnetization.
