  • Perspectives on the definition of visually lossless quality for mobile and large format displays
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Electronic Imaging (JEI). - 1017-9909 .- 1560-229X. ; 27:5, s. 1-23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Advances in imaging and display engineering have given rise to new and improved image and videoapplications that aim to maximize visual quality under given resource constraints (e.g., power, bandwidth).Because the human visual system is an imperfect sensor, the images/videos can be represented in a mathematicallylossy fashion but with enough fidelity that the losses are visually imperceptible—commonly termed“visually lossless.” Although a great deal of research has focused on gaining a better understanding ofthe limits of human vision when viewing natural images/video, a universally or even largely accepted definitionof visually lossless remains elusive. Differences in testing methodologies, research objectives, and targetapplications have led to multiple ad-hoc definitions that are often difficult to compare to or otherwise employ inother settings. We present a compendium of technical experiments relating to both vision science and visualquality testing that together explore the research and business perspectives of visually lossless image quality,as well as review recent scientific advances. Together, the studies presented in this paper suggest that a singledefinition of visually lossless quality might not be appropriate; rather, a better goal would be to establish varyinglevels of visually lossless quality that can be quantified in terms of the testing paradigm.

  • Enhanced Thermoelectric Power Factor of Tensile Drawn Poly(3-hexylthiophene)
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: ACS Macro Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 2161-1653. ; 8:1, s. 70-76
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2018 American Chemical Society. The thermoelectric power factor of a broad range of organic semiconductors scales with their electrical conductivity according to a widely obeyed power law, and therefore, strategies that permit this empirical trend to be surpassed are highly sought after. Here, tensile drawing of the conjugated polymer poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) is employed to create free-standing films with a high degree of uniaxial alignment. Along the direction of orientation, sequential doping with a molybdenum tris(dithiolene) complex leads to a 5-fold enhancement of the power factor beyond the predicted value, reaching up to 16 μW m-1 K-2 for a conductivity of about 13 S cm-1. Neither stretching nor doping affect the glass transition temperature of P3HT, giving rise to robust free-standing materials that are of interest for the design of flexible thermoelectric devices.

  • 200 Gbps/lane IM/DD Technologies for Short Reach Optical Interconnects
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Lightwave Technology. - 0733-8724 .- 1558-2213. ; 38:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Client-side optics are facing an ever-increasing upgrading pace, driven by upcoming 5G related services and datacenter applications. The demand for a single lane data rate is soon approaching 200 Gbps. To meet such high-speed requirements, all segments of traditional intensity modulation direct detection (IM/DD) technologies are being challenged. The characteristics of electrical and optoelectronic components, and the performance of modulation, coding and digital signal processing (DSP) techniques are being stretched to their limits. In this context, we witnessed technological breakthroughs in several aspects, including development of broadband devices, novel modulation formats and coding, and high-performance DSP algorithms for the past few years. A great momentum has been accumulated to overcome the aforementioned challenges. In this paper, we focus on IM/DD transmissions, and provide an overview of recent research and development efforts on key enabling technologies for 200 Gbps per lane and beyond. Our recent demonstrations of 200 Gbps short-reach transmissions with 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) and discrete multitone signals are also presented as examples to show the system requirements in terms of device characteristics and DSP performance. Apart from digital coherent technologies and advanced direct detection systems, such as Stokes-vector and Kramers-Kronig schemes, we expect high-speed IM/DD systems will remain advantageous in terms of system cost, power consumption and footprint for short reach applications in the short- to mid- term perspective.

  • Why Do Bamboo Parenchyma Cells Show Higher Nanofibrillation Efficiency than Fibers : An Investigation on Their Hierarchical Cell Wall Structure
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Biomacromolecules. - : American Chemical Society. - 1525-7797 .- 1526-4602. ; 23:10, s. 4053-4062
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The cell walls of parenchyma cells and fibers in bamboo are both highly lignified with secondary thickening. However, the former were found to have much higher nanofibrillation efficiency than fibers via both protocols of ultrasonication and high pressure homogenization. To elucidate the inherent mechanism, detailed comparisons of chemical composition, cell morphology, cell wall density, pore structures, and structural organization of cell wall polymers were performed on native and pretreated cell walls of both parenchyma cells and fibers. Chemical compositional analysis showed that fibers have much higher cellulose (49.8% to 35.5%) but lower xylan content (21.1% to 36.2%) than parenchyma, while their lignin contents were similar (24.9% vs 22.9%). Polarized FTIR further revealed clear differences in the structural organization of polymers between the two types of cells, with all the polymers of fibers being more orderly assembled than those of parenchyma cells. The compact arrangement of polymers in the fibers was also supported by the much higher cell wall density (1.52 vs 1.28 g/cm3) and lower porosity (0.007 vs 0.013 cc/g after chemical pretreatments), as compared to the parenchyma cells. The study provides evidence that the anatomical characteristics of huge cavity-wall ratio, higher cell wall porosity, and less ordered arrangement of cell wall matrix polymers (mainly lignin) in parenchyma cells contribute to their higher nanofibrillation efficiency compared to fibers.
