  • Effective Field Theory and Inelastic Dark Matter Results from XENON1T
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this work we expand on the XENON1T nuclear recoil searches and study the individual signals of Dark Matter interactions from operators up to dimension-eight in a Chiral Effective Field Theory (ChEFT) as well as a model of inelastic Dark Matter using data from the two science runs of the detector totalling 1 tonne*year exposure. For these analyses we extended the region of interest from [4.9, 40.9]keVnr to [4.9, 54.4]keVnr to enhance our sensitivity for signals that peak at nonzero energies. We show that the data is consistent with a background only hypothesis, with small excesses in the models which peak between 20 and 50keVnr, obtaining a maximum local discovery significance of 1.7 for the VVs ChEFT model for a WIMP mass of 70GeV/c2, and 1.8 for an iDM particle of 50GeV/c2 with a mass splitting of 100keV/c2. For each model we report 90% confidence level upper limits. We also report limits on three benchmark models of WIMP interaction using ChEFT for which we investigate the effect of isospin breaking interactions, reporting up to 6 orders of magnitude weaker limits with respect to the isospin conserving case driven by cancellations in the expected rate.

  • Spatial modeling of the occurrences of geogenic fluoride in groundwater systems and implications for the provision of safe drinking water in Tanzania
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Inadequate data and spatial dependence in the observations during geochemical studies are among the disturbing conditions when estimating environmental factors contributing to the local variability in the pollutants of interest. Usually, spatial dependence occurs due to the researcher’s imperfection on the natural scale of occurrence which affects the sampling strategy. As a consequence, observations on the study variable are significantly correlated in space. In this study, the machine learning approach was developed and used to study the environmental factors controlling the local variability in fluoride concentration in drinking water sources of northern Tanzania within the East African Rift Valley. The approach constituted use of the geographical information systems (GIS) technology, exploratory spatial data analysis methods, and spatial modeling at a local level. The environmental variables used to study the local variation in fluoride concentration include topography, tectonic processes, water exchanges between hydrogeological layers during lateral movement, the mineralization processes (EC), and pH. The study was based on 20 local spatial regimes determined using GIS based on water sources density in the four hydrogeological environments. The non-parametric (one-way Kruskal-Wallis sum ranks test and Multiple Comparisons Dunn Test), spatial statistics (Global Moran's I statistic), ordinary least squares (OLS) regression and spatial lag models were used to quantify the effects of topography, tectonic processes, water exchange between hydrogeological environments and waterphysiochemical parameters (pH and EC) on the spatial variability of fluoride concentrations in drinking water sources at a local scale. In the order of significance, the local spatial variation in fluoride concentration is influenced by the EC, topography, tectonic processes, pH and water exchange between hydrogeological layers during water movement. The results presented in this paper are crucial for safe water access planning in the naturally contaminated aquifers.

  • Pore-scale characterization of residual phase remobilization in geological CO2 storage using X-ray microtomography and pore-network modelling
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this study, the pore-scale characteristics of trapped CO2 remobilization under pressure depletion conditions were studied with the use of 3D X-ray microtomography and pore-network modelling. Three-dimensional X-ray microtomographic images of a sandstone sample with a voxel size of 3.83 mm were acquired from which a pore network was extracted. Experimental results show that trapped CO2 remobilization during pressure depletion is an intermittent process in nature, due to which the CO2 relative permeability is significantly reduced. This serves as a safety enhancing feature as it delays CO2 remobilization and migration. Ostwald ripening plays a significant role in the CO2 phase redistribution, which could potentially lead to remobilization even in the absence of pressure depletion. According to the pore network simulation results, weakly wetting conditions enhances the reconnection of the trapped CO2 ganglia, which in turn promotes the remobilization of the trapped phase. The simulation and experimental results agree in terms of the saturation increment needed to remobilize the CO2 – approximately 0.06 – and the pressure at which the CO2 connects – around 7 MPa. The findings of the current study provide valuable insights into the pore-scale aspects of trapped phase remobilization, a phenomenon that affects the fate of CO2 residual trapping in both the short and long term.

  • Core levels, valence band structures and unoccupied states of biphenylene films
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Biphenylene is a cyclic hydrocarbon made of two benzene rings connected by a cyclobutadiene ring. We performed a photoemission and near-edge absorption (PES and NEXAFS) spectroscopy investigation on biphenylene films of different thicknesses, deposited onto a Cu(111) crystal. By PES we studied the occupied core and valence levels, while NEXAFS gave us information on the unoccupied states. The obtained results have been compared to previous gas phase spectra and density functional theory (DFT) calculations on single biphenylene molecule to get insights in the film electronic structure and possible modification induces by the adsorption. Furthermore, NEXAFS results of biphenylene films of different thicknesses allowed the characterization of the molecular arrangement in the overlayer on the Cu surface and helped to clarify the substrate-molecule interactions.
