  • Search for heavy lepton resonances decaying to a Z boson and a lepton in pp collisions at root s=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics. - Springer. - 1029-8479. ; :9, s. 108
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A search for heavy leptons decaying to a Z boson and an electron or a muon is presented. The search is based on pp collision data taken at root s = 8TeV by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb(-1). Three high-transverse-momentum electrons or muons are selected, with two of them required to be consistent with originating from a Z boson decay. No significant excess above Standard Model background predictions is observed, and 95% confidence level limits on the production cross section of high-mass trilepton resonances are derived. The results are interpreted in the context of vector-like lepton and type-III seesaw models. For the vector-like lepton model, most heavy lepton mass values in the range 114-176 GeV are excluded. For the type-III seesaw model, most mass values in the range 100-468 GeV are excluded.

  • Search for production of vector-like quark pairs and of four top quarks in the lepton-plus-jets final state in pp collisions at root 8=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics. - Springer. - 1029-8479. ; :8, s. 105
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A search for pair production of vector-like quarks, both up-type (T) and down-type (B), as well as for four-top-quark production, is presented. The search is based on pp collisions at TeV recorded in 2012 with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb(-1). Data are analysed in the lepton-plus-jets final state, characterised by an isolated electron or muon with high transverse momentum, large missing transverse momentum and multiple jets. Dedicated analyses are performed targeting three cases: a T quark with significant branching ratio to a W boson and a b-quark , and both a T quark and a B quark with significant branching ratio to a Higgs boson and a third-generation quark ( respectively). No significant excess of events above the Standard Model expectation is observed, and 95% CL lower limits are derived on the masses of the vector-like T and B quarks under several branching ratio hypotheses assuming contributions from T -> Wb, Zt, Ht and B -> Wt, Zb, Hb decays. The 95% CL observed lower limits on the T quark mass range between 715 GeV and 950 GeV for all possible values of the branching ratios into the three decay modes, and are the most stringent constraints to date. Additionally, the most restrictive upper bounds on four-top-quark production are set in a number of new physics scenarios.

  • ATLAS Run 1 searches for direct pair production of third-generation squarks at the Large Hadron Collider.
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: European physical journal. C, Particles and fields. - Springer. - 1434-6044. ; 75:10, s. 510
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reviews and extends searches for the direct pair production of the scalar supersymmetric partners of the top and bottom quarks in proton-proton collisions collected by the ATLAS collaboration during the LHC Run 1. Most of the analyses use 20 [Formula: see text] of collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of [Formula: see text] TeV, although in some case an additional [Formula: see text] of collision data at [Formula: see text] TeV are used. New analyses are introduced to improve the sensitivity to specific regions of the model parameter space. Since no evidence of third-generation squarks is found, exclusion limits are derived by combining several analyses and are presented in both a simplified model framework, assuming simple decay chains, as well as within the context of more elaborate phenomenological supersymmetric models.

  • Modelling Z -> tau tau processes in ATLAS with tau-embedded Z -> mu mu data
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Instrumentation. - IOP. - 1748-0221. ; 10, s. P09018
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes the concept, technical realisation and validation of a largely data-driven method to model events with Z -> tau tau decays. In Z -> mu mu events selected from proton-proton collision data recorded at root s = 8 TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in 2012, the Z decay muons are replaced by tau leptons from simulated Z -> tau tau decays at the level of reconstructed tracks and calorimeter cells. The tau lepton kinematics are derived from the kinematics of the original muons. Thus, only the well-understood decays of the Z boson and tau leptons as well as the detector response to the tau decay products are obtained from simulation. All other aspects of the event, such as the Z boson and jet kinematics as well as effects from multiple interactions, are given by the actual data. This so-called tau-embedding method is particularly relevant for Higgs boson searches and analyses in tau tau final states, where Z -> tau tau decays constitute a large irreducible background that cannot be obtained directly from data control samples. In this paper, the relevant concepts are discussed based on the implementation used in the ATLAS Standard Model H -> tau tau analysis of the full datataset recorded during 2011 and 2012.

  • Search for metastable heavy charged particles with large ionisation energy loss in pp collisions at root s=8 TeV using the ATLAS experiment
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. - Springer. - 1434-6044. ; 75:9, s. 407
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many extensions of the Standard Model predict the existence of charged heavy long-lived particles, such as R-hadrons or charginos. These particles, if produced at the Large Hadron Collider, should bemoving non-relativistically and are therefore identifiable through the measurement of an anomalously large specific energy loss in the ATLAS pixel detector. Measuring heavy long-lived particles through their track parameters in the vicinity of the interaction vertex provides sensitivity to metastable particles with lifetimes from 0.6 ns to 30 ns. A search for such particles with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider is presented, based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 18.4 fb(-1) of pp collisions at root s = 8 TeV. No significant deviation from the Standard Model background expectation is observed, and lifetime-dependent upper limits on R-hadrons and chargino production are set. Gluino R-hadrons with 10 ns lifetime and masses up to 1185 GeV are excluded at 95 % confidence level, and so are charginos with 15 ns lifetime and masses up to 482 GeV.

  • Search for photonic signatures of gauge-mediated supersymmetry in 8 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - American Physical Society. - 1550-7998. ; 92:7, s. 072001
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A search is presented for photonic signatures motivated by generalized models of gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking. This search makes use of 20.3 fb(-1) of proton-proton collision data at root s = 8 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC, and explores models dominated by both strong and electroweak production of supersymmetric partner states. Four experimental signatures incorporating an isolated photon and significant missing transverse momentum are explored. These signatures include events with an additional photon, lepton, b-quark jet, or jet activity not associated with any specific underlying quark flavor. No significant excess of events is observed above the Standard Model prediction and model-dependent 95% confidence-level exclusion limits are set.

  • Summary of the searches for squarks and gluinos using root s=8 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics. - Springer. - 1029-8479. ; :10, s. 054
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A summary is presented of ATLAS searches for gluinos and first- and second-generation squarks in final states containing jets and missing transverse momentum, with or without leptons or b-jets, in the root s = 8 TeV data set collected at the Large Hadron Collider in 2012. This paper reports the results of new interpretations and statistical combinations of previously published analyses, as well as a new analysis. Since no significant excess of events over the Standard Model expectation is observed, the data are used to set limits in a variety of models. In all the considered simplified models that assume R-parity conservation, the limit on the gluino mass exceeds 1150 GeV at 95% confidence level, for an LSP mass smaller than 100 GeV. Furthermore, exclusion limits are set for left-handed squarks in a phenomenological MSSM model, a minimal Supergravity/Constrained MSSM model, R-parity-violation scenarios, a minimal gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking model, a natural gauge mediation model, a non-universal Higgs mass model with gaugino mediation and a minimal model of universal extra dimensions.

  • Determination of spin and parity of the Higgs boson in the [Formula:
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: The European physical journal. C, Particles and fields. - Springer. - 1434-6044. ; 75:5, s. 231
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Studies of the spin and parity quantum numbers of the Higgs boson in the [Formula: see text] final state are presented, based on proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb[Formula: see text] at a centre-of-mass energy of [Formula: see text] TeV. The Standard Model spin-parity [Formula: see text] hypothesis is compared with alternative hypotheses for both spin and CP. The case where the observed resonance is a mixture of the Standard-Model-like Higgs boson and CP-even ([Formula: see text]) or CP-odd ([Formula: see text]) Higgs boson in scenarios beyond the Standard Model is also studied. The data are found to be consistent with the Standard Model prediction and limits are placed on alternative spin and CP hypotheses, including CP mixing in different scenarios.

  • Measurement of exclusive gamma gamma -> l(+)l(-) production in proton-proton collisions at root s=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - Elsevier. - 0370-2693. ; 749, s. 242-261
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This Letter reports a measurement of the exclusive gamma gamma -> l(+)l(-) (l = e, mu) cross-section in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC, based on an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb(-1). For the electron or muon pairs satisfying exclusive selection criteria, a fit to the dilepton acoplanarity distribution is used to extract the fiducial cross-sections. The cross-section in the electron channel is determined to be sigma(excl)(gamma gamma -> e+e-) = 0.428 +/- 0.035 (stat.) +/- 0.018 (syst.) pbfor a phase-space region with invariant mass of the electron pairs greater than 24GeV, in which both electrons have transverse momentum p(T) > 12 GeV and pseudorapidity vertical bar eta vertical bar < 2.4. For muon pairs with invariant mass greater than 20GeV, muon transverse momentum pT> 10 GeV and pseudorapidity vertical bar eta vertical bar < 2.4, the cross-section is determined to be sigma(excl)(gamma gamma -> mu+mu-) = 0.628 +/- 0.032(stat.) +/- 0.021 (syst.) pb. When proton absorptive effects due to the finite size of the proton are taken into account in the theory calculation, the measured cross-sections are found to be consistent with the theory prediction. • Search for long-lived, weakly interacting particles that decay to displaced hadronic jets in proton-proton collisions at root s=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: PHYSICAL REVIEW D. - AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 1550-7998. ; 92:1, s. 012010
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A search for the decay of neutral, weakly interacting, long-lived particles using data collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC is presented. This analysis uses the full data set recorded in 2012: 20.3 fb(-1) of proton-proton collision data at root s = 8 TeV. The search employs techniques for reconstructing decay vertices of long-lived particles decaying to jets in the inner tracking detector and muon spectrometer. Signal events require at least two reconstructed vertices. No significant excess of events over the expected background is found, and limits as a function of proper lifetime are reported for the decay of the Higgs boson and other scalar bosons to long-lived particles and for Hidden Valley Z' and Stealth SUSY benchmark models. The first search results for displaced decays in Z' and Stealth SUSY models are presented. The upper bounds of the excluded proper lifetimes are the most stringent to date.
