  • New Grid Scheduling and Rescheduling Methods in the GrADS Project
  • 2004
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Summary form only given. The goal of the Grid Application Development Software (GrADS) project is to provide programming tools and an execution environment to ease program development for the grid. We present recent extensions to the GrADS software framework: 1. A new approach to scheduling workflow computations, applied to a 3D image reconstruction application; 2. A simple stop/migrate/restart approach to rescheduling grid applications, applied to a QR 3. A process-swapping approach to rescheduling, applied to an N-body simulation. Experiments validating these methods were carried out on both the GrADS MacroGrid (a small but functional grid) and the MicroGrid (a controlled emulation of the grid) and the results were demonstrated at the SC2003 conference.

  • Language development in hearing-impaired children - Establishment of a reference material for a 'Language test for hearing-impaired children', LATHIC
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology. - 1872-8464. ; 65:1, s. 15-26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: In Sweden, there has previously been no normalised test material for the evaluation of language development in individual hearing-impaired children, and for the assessment of various methods of auditory habilitation. The purpose of the present study was to compose, apply and evaluate a test for language development in hearing-impaired children, and to establish the first set of reference values related to age, sex, type and degree of hearing impairment. Methods: A test consisting of nine subtests was assembled and developed for, and subsequently applied to, hearing-impaired children in the age range 4-6 years. The inclusion criteria were a pure tone average of 80 dBHL or less and oral language (Swedish) as the first language. Two hundred and eleven hearing-impaired children and 87 normal hearing control children were tested. Results: The results show that: (1) children with hearing impairment-also unilateral-have a delayed language development; (2) the delay is greater in children with larger losses and tends to decrease with increasing age; (3) 6-year-olds with hearing loss greater than 60 dB have not reached the level of the control group; (4) no difference between right- or left sided deafness with respect to language development was observed; (5) a reference material, applicable during clinical assessment, was established for the most common types of hearing impairment. Conclusions: The test designed gave graded measures of important aspects of language development in hearing-impaired children. The results merit further application of the test material. • Hair mercury levels versus freshwater fish consumption in household members of Swedish angling societies
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Environ Res. ; 96:3, s. 257-63
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Hair mercury levels were determined in 143 individuals from households of members in angling societies in an area of Sweden with many lakes that have freshwater fish with relatively high mercury levels. Thus, the individuals had a potentially high intake of methyl mercury. The mean mercury concentration of pike and perch was approximately 0.7 microg/g. One-third of the subjects consumed these freshwater fish at least once a week. As could be expected, there was a clear increase in hair Hg with reported freshwater fish consumption (P < 0.001). The median mercury level in hair was 0.9 microg Hg/g for the whole group, and for those who reported consumption of freshwater fish at least once a week it was 1.8 microg/g. The highest hair mercury level was 18.5 microg/g, in a man who consumed pike and perch several times per week. Men had higher hair Hg than women, also when stratified for fish consumption. This was verified in 32 couples, of which the man and woman consumed the same fish and reported the same consumption. The median hair mercury level in these 32 couples was 1.3 microg/g for men and 0.8 microg/g for women (P = 0.002). About half of the subjects had hair mercury exceeding 1 microg/g, corresponding to the reference dose (RfD) of 0.1 microg of mercury per kilogram body weight set by the US Environmental Protection Agency. Although the RfD applies to all populations, the most at-risk group at these levels is pregnant women. There were only 2 women (of 12) of fertile age with hair mercury above 1 microg/g. In Sweden pregnant women are advised not to eat perch and pike at all during pregnancy. Since fish is rich in many important nutrients, it is unsatisfactory that fish consumption must be restricted, and thus there is a need to reduce mercury levels in fish.

  • On the carbothermal vapour-liquid-solid (VLS) mechanism for TaC, TiC, and TaxTi1-xC whisker growth
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Journal of the European Ceramic Society. - 0955-2219 .- 1873-619X. ; 20:14-15, s. 2607-2618
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The growth of TaC, TiC and TaxTi1-xC whiskers has been studied in some detail. The whiskers were synthesised via a vapour-liquid-solid (VLS) growth mechanism in the temperature range 1220-1400 degreesC. The starting materials were Ta2O5, TiO2, C, NaCl, and a catalyst metal (Ni, Co, Fe, and Cu were tested). The main reaction during synthesis was a carbothermal reduction of Ta2O5 and TiO2, and NaCl was added to form the oxochlorides and chlorides of Ta and Ti that account for the transport to the catalyst metal. The syntheses were made in a protecting Ar atmosphere. From experiments interrupted after different times at the synthesis temperature it is clear that sodium tantalates form as intermediate products, whereas sodium titanates cannot be identified. Only metals that are able to dissolve the elements building up the whiskers work as catalysts. Whisker growth starts either from a catalyst droplet in contact with carbon or from an oxide particle in contact with both catalyst metal and carbon. For TaC and TaxTi1-xC the only growth direction observed is [100], while TiC may grow either along [100] or along [111].
