  • How will your workload look like in 6 years? : Analyzing Wikimedia's workload
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 2014 IEEE International Conference on Cloud Engineering (IC2E 2014). - : IEEE Computer Society. - 9781479937660 ; , s. 349-354
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Accurate understanding of workloads is key to efficient cloud resource management as well as to the design of large-scale applications. We analyze and model the workload of Wikipedia, one of the world's largest web sites. With descriptive statistics, time-series analysis, and polynomial splines, we study the trend and seasonality of the workload, its evolution over the years, and also investigate patterns in page popularity. Our results indicate that the workload is highly predictable with a strong seasonality. Our short term prediction algorithm is able to predict the workload with a Mean Absolute Percentage Error of around 2%.

  • The Visual Object Tracking VOT2013 challenge results
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 2013 IEEE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON COMPUTER VISION WORKSHOPS (ICCVW). - : IEEE. - 9781479930227 ; , s. 98-111
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Visual tracking has attracted a significant attention in the last few decades. The recent surge in the number of publications on tracking-related problems have made it almost impossible to follow the developments in the field. One of the reasons is that there is a lack of commonly accepted annotated data-sets and standardized evaluation protocols that would allow objective comparison of different tracking methods. To address this issue, the Visual Object Tracking (VOT) workshop was organized in conjunction with ICCV2013. Researchers from academia as well as industry were invited to participate in the first VOT2013 challenge which aimed at single-object visual trackers that do not apply pre-learned models of object appearance (model-free). Presented here is the VOT2013 benchmark dataset for evaluation of single-object visual trackers as well as the results obtained by the trackers competing in the challenge. In contrast to related attempts in tracker benchmarking, the dataset is labeled per-frame by visual attributes that indicate occlusion, illumination change, motion change, size change and camera motion, offering a more systematic comparison of the trackers. Furthermore, we have designed an automated system for performing and evaluating the experiments. We present the evaluation protocol of the VOT2013 challenge and the results of a comparison of 27 trackers on the benchmark dataset. The dataset, the evaluation tools and the tracker rankings are publicly available from the challenge website(1).

  • Molecular and pathological studies in the posterior interosseous nerve of diabetic and non-diabetic patients with carpal tunnel syndrome
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Diabetologia. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1432-0428 .- 0012-186X. ; 57:8, s. 1711-1719
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aims/hypothesis We sought to establish the molecular and pathological changes predisposing diabetic and non-diabetic patients to the development of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Methods The posterior interosseous nerve (PIN) was biopsied in 25 diabetic and 19 non-diabetic patients undergoing carpal tunnel decompression for CTS. Detailed morphometric and immunohistological analyses were performed in the nerve biopsy. Results In diabetic patients median nerve distal motor latency was prolonged (p < 0.05 vs non-diabetic patients), PIN myelinated fibre density (p < 0.05), fibre area (p < 0.0001) and axon area (p < 0.0001) were reduced, the percentage of unassociated Schwann cell profiles (p < 0.0001) and unmyelinated axon density (p < 0.0001) were increased and the axon diameter was reduced (p < 0.0001). Endoneurial capillary basement membrane area was increased (p < 0.0001) in diabetic patients, but endothelial cell number was increased (p < 0.01) and luminal area was reduced (p < 0.05) in non-diabetic patients with CTS. There was no difference in the expression of hypoxia-inducible factor 1 alpha between diabetic and non-diabetic patients with CTS. However, the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF) (p < 0.05) and its receptors VEGFR-1 (p < 0.01) and VEGFR-2 (p < 0.05) was significantly increased in diabetic patients, particularly those with type 1 diabetes, and related to the severity of nerve fibre pathology. Conclusions/interpretation This study demonstrates increased nerve fibre and microvascular pathology in relation to enhanced expression of VEGF and its receptors in a non-compressed nerve in diabetic compared with non-diabetic patients with CTS. It therefore provides a potential molecular and pathological basis for the predisposition of diabetic patients to the development of CTS.

  • Comparison of immediate complete denture, tooth and implant-supported overdenture on vertical dimension and muscle activity
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Advanced Prosthodontics. - : Korean Academy of Prosthodontics. - 2005-7806 .- 2005-7814. ; 4:2, s. 61-71
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PURPOSE: To compare the changes in the occlusal vertical dimension, activity of masseter muscles and biting force after insertion of immediate denture constructed with conventional, tooth-supported and Implant-supported immediate mandibular complete denture.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients were selected and treatment was carried out with all the three different concepts i.e, immediate denture constructed with conventional (Group A), tooth-supported (Group B) and Implant-supported (Group C) immediate mandibular complete dentures. Parameters of evaluation and comparison were occlusal vertical dimension measured by radiograph (at three different time intervals), Masseter muscle electromyographic (EMG) measurement by EMG analysis (at three different positions of jaws) and bite force measured by force transducer (at two different time intervals). The obtained data were statistically analyzed by using ANOVA-F test at 5% level of significance. If the F test was significant, Least Significant Difference test was performed to test further significant differences between variables.RESULTS: Comparison between mean differences in occlusal vertical dimension for tested groups showed that it was only statistically significant at 1 year after immediate dentures insertion. Comparison between mean differences in wavelet packet coefficients of the electromyographic signals of masseter muscles for tested groups was not significant at rest position, but significant at initial contact position and maximum voluntary clench position. Comparison between mean differences in maximum biting force for tested groups was not statistically significant at 5% level of significance.CONCLUSION: Immediate complete overdentures whether tooth or implant supported prosthesis is recommended than totally mucosal supported prosthesis.

  • Chemical Studies on Uranium Extraction from Concentrated Phosphoric Acid by Using PC88A and DBBP Mixture.
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Radioanalytical and Nuclear Chemistry. - : Springer. - 0236-5731 .- 1588-2780. ; 290, s. 353-359
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Liquid–liquid extraction of U (VI) from concentrated phosphoric acid by using (2-ethyl hexyl) phosphonic acid, mono (2-ethyl hexyl) ester (PC88A) and di-butyl butyl phosphonate (DBBP) has been investigated. The effect of different factors affecting the extraction process (PC88A concentration, DBBP concentration, shaking time, aqueous/organic phase ratio, phosphoric acid concentration and effect of diluents) have been investigated. The obtained data of temperature on the extraction showed that the enthalpy change is −17.15 kJ mol−1. Uranium was extracted from the strip liquor by using di (2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid and tri-octyl phosphine oxide mixture and finally converted to a high purity UO3 product using precipitation with hydrogen peroxide and heat treatment at 365 °C.

  • Are gay men and lesbians discriminated against in the hiring process?
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Southern Economic Journal. - : Southern Economic Association (SEA). - 0038-4038 .- 2325-8012. ; 79:3, s. 565-585
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article presents the first field experiment on sexual orientation discrimination in the hiring process in the Swedish labor market. Job applications were sent to about 4000 employers in 10 different occupations in Sweden. Gender and sexual orientation were randomly assigned to applications. The results show that sexual orientation discrimination exists in the Swedish labor market. The discrimination against the gay male applicant and the lesbian applicant varied across different occupations and appears to be concentrated in the private sector. The results also show that the gay male applicant was discriminated against in typical male-dominated occupations, whereas the lesbian applicant was discriminated against in typical female-dominated occupations. Theoretical implications are discussed

  • Are homosexuals discriminated against in the hiring process?
  • 2012
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper presents the first field experiment on sexual orientation discrimination in the hiring process in the Swedish labor market. Job applications were sent to about 4,000 employers in 10 different occupations in Sweden. Gender and sexual orientation were randomly assigned to applications. The results show that sexual orientation discrimination exists in the Swedish labor market. The discrimination against gays and lesbian varies across different occupations and appears only in the private sector. The results also seem to suggest a new dimension of traditional gender roles; the gay applicant was discriminated against in typical male-dominated occupations whereas the lesbian applicant was discriminated against in typical female-dominated occupations. Thus, the results suggest that gays to some extent face the same obstacles on the labor market as heterosexual women.

  • Can discrimination in the housing market be reduced by increasing the information about the applicants?
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Land Economics. - : University of Wisconsin Press. - 0023-7639 .- 1543-8325. ; 86:1, s. 79-90
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate how increasing the information about applicantsaffects discrimination in the rental housing market. We letfour fictitious applicants, two with typical Arab/Muslim namesand two with typical Swedish names, use application letterscontaining different amounts of information to apply for apartmentsover the Internet in Sweden. The Arab/Muslim applicants receivedfewer responses from the landlords than did the Swedish applicants. All of the applicants gained by providing more information aboutthemselves, but the amount of discrimination against the Arab/Muslimapplicants remained unchanged, indicating that increasing theamount of information about the applicants will not reduce discrimination

  • Co-ethnic preferences in a cooking game: : a study based on Come Dine With Me in Sweden
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Ethnic and Racial Studies. - : Taylor and Francis (Routledge): SSH Titles. - 0141-9870 .- 1466-4356. ; 36:12, s. 2220-2236
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study examines ethnic preferences using data from the television cooking show Come Dine With Me in Sweden. Amateur chefs compete by hosting dinner parties. Contestants rate each others performance and the host with the highest ratings wins a cash prize. The show gives an unorthodox opportunity to study ethnic preferences in a high-stakes game environment. The analysis of the collected data shows that native Swedish contestants rate co-ethnic hosts significantly more favourably than they rate other hosts, demonstrating the existence of co-ethnic preferences. This observation seems to be an outcome of own-group favouritism rather than dislike against other groups. Also, the observed co-ethnic preference is assumed to be subtle or non-conscious based on the nature of the analysed data.

  • Conditional reciprocity in the investment game
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: The Social Science Journal. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0362-3319 .- 1873-5355. ; 48:2, s. 404-408
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates whether people are conditional reciprocators in an investment game experiment, in the sense that the more they are trusted, the more they reciprocate. The results show that the majority of participants are conditional reciprocators but that they can be classified into three types: (1) exploitative reciprocators who do not reciprocate and exploit trust; (2) egoistic reciprocators who neither exploit nor reward trust; and (3) generous reciprocators who reward trusting behavior.
