  • Impact of climate change on rice insect pests and their natural enemies
  • 2013
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rice is one of the important staple foods for half of the world population particularly Asian countries for their livelihood, socio-economic and nutrition. Global warming is predicted to increase frequency of precipitation/rainfall, intensity of drought and solar-radiation/UV-B radiation which might affect the intensity and severity of rice pests in one hand, but also change in other friendly arthropods on the other hand. The present studies discuss the influence of climatic factors (temperature and rainfall) on yellow stem borer (YSB), brown planthopper (BPH), green leafhopper (GLH) and their natural enemies (spider, lady bird beetle, green mirid bug). Light trap and sweep net catches of arthropods from different rice habitats were used in this study. For GLH there is a strong periodicity at 6 months and a somewhat weaker periodicity at 12 months followed by an even weaker periodicity at 3 months, especially valid for both methods of data collection (light trap and sweep-net data). Finally, for GMB there is a strong periodicity at 6 months and a somewhat weaker periodicity at 3 months followed by an even weaker periodicity at 4 months. There is a general increasing trend over the ten years seems to be present in the GLH. This corresponds to that the abundance in 2005 is generally 15 times larger than in January 1996. For LBB, there is an increasing trend of log abundance of LBB over time and shows a strong periodicity at 3 months and a somewhat weaker periodicity at 4 months followed by an even weaker periodicity at about 6 months. For Spider there is a strong periodicity at 2.4 months and a somewhat weaker periodicity at 4 months followed by an even weaker periodicities at about 3 months and 6 months. Results show an increase of maximum temperature of approximately 0.5 to 1°C over 10 years.

  • Potentiometric urea biosensor utilizing nanobiocomposite of chitosan-iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 21st International Laser Physics Workshop 23–27 July 2012, Calgary, Canada. - : Institute of Physics (IOP).
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The iron oxide (Fe3O4) magnetic nanoparticles have been fabricated through a simple, cheap and reproducible approach. Scanning electron microscope, x-rays powder diffraction of the fabricated nanoparticles. Furthermore, the fabrication of potentiometric urea biosensor is carried out through drop casting the initially prepared isopropanol and chitosan solution, containing Fe3O4 nanoparticles, on the glass fiber filter with a diameter of 2 cm and a copper wire (of thickness −500 μm) has been utilized to extract the voltage signal from the functionalized nanoparticles. The functionalization of surface of the Fe3O4 nanoparticles is obtained by the electrostatically immobilization of urease onto the nanobiocomposite of the chitosan- Fe3O4 in order to enhance the sensitivity, specificity, stability and reusability of urea biosensor. Electrochemical detection procedure has been adopted to measure the potentiometric response over the wide logarithmic concentration range of the 0.1 mM to 80 mM. The Fe3O4 nanoparticles based urea biosensor depicts good sensitivity with ~42 mV per decade at room temperature. Durability of the biosensor could be considerably enhanced by applying a thin layer of the nafion. In addition, the reasonably stable output response of the biosensor has been found to be around 12 sec.

  • High-aspect-ratio, 3-D micromachining of carbon-nanotube forests by micro-electro-discharge machining in air
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the IEEE International Conference on Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS). - 1084-6999. - 9781424496327 ; , s. 272-275
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper reports micro-electro-discharge machining of vertically aligned carbon nanotube forests for the formation of high-aspect-ratio, three-dimensional microstructures in the material. The developed forest machining method is a dry process performed in air, generating high-frequency pulses of electrical discharge to locally machine the nanotubes in order to create target shapes in a forest. With this approach, forest microstructures can be fabricated to have varying shapes along their height, unachievable with conventional pre-patterned chemical vapor deposition growth techniques. The use of the pulses with a minimized discharge energy defined with 35 V and 10 pF in the discharge generation circuit leads to an aspect ratio of 20 with the smallest feature of 5 μm in forests without disordering the vertical orientation of the nanotubes. Micromachining of multilayer geometries as well as arrayed needle-like microstructures with angled surfaces is demonstrated.

  • Agarwood classification: A Case-Based Reasoning approach based on E-nose
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - 2012 IEEE 8th International Colloquium on Signal Processing and Its Applications, CSPA 2012. - 9781467309615 ; , s. 120-126
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using an array of sensors (E-nose) to classify Agarwood has proven to be successful and produced performance close to an expert level (90% of expert level performance) but it has proven difficult to eliminate misclassifications without over-fitting. In our effort to improve our result we explored a self-improving Case-Based Reasoning approach and reached 100% correct classification. Case-Based Reasoning is an approach that will learn from every new classified case and hence the risk for misclassification is reduced. Also when new cases have to be classified that have never occurred before the system will avoid misclassification (similarity measurement is low). The approach also enables indeterminism; in reality a sample may be both close to a good case and a bad case and need further exploration by experts. The approach also handles natural variants in the wood samples well; both low-quality and high-quality samples may spread considerably in the context of E-nose readings and there is no model available of low or high quality.

  • Applications of Zinc Oxide Nanowires for Bio-photonics and Bio-electronics
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of SPIE Volume 7940. - Bellingham, Washington, USA : SPIE - International Society for Optical Engineering. - 9780819484772
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Using zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures, nanorods (NRs) and nanoparticles (NPs) grown on different substrates (sub-micrometer glass pipettes, thin silver wire and on plastic substrate) different bio-sensors were demonstrated. The demonstrated sensors are based on potentiometric approach and are sensitive to the ionic metals and biological analyte in question. For each case a selective membrane or enzyme was used. The measurements were performed for intracellular environment as well as in some cases (cholesterol and uric acid). The selectivity in each case is tuned according to the element to be sensed. Moreover we also developed photodynamic therapy approach based on the use of ZnO NRs and NPs. Necrosis/apoptosis was possible to achieve for different types of cancerous cell. The results indicate that the ZnO with its UV and white band emissions is beneficial to photodynamic therapy technology.
