- The declined reading of morning papers has been considered as a problem in modern countries within the last decades. It is especially young people who are abandoning the subscribed morning paper. During the same period new forms of newspapers such as free dailies and online news has developed. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the development of readership among young Swedish persons in the 2000s. The data analysed is conducted through a postal survey to 6.000 persons each year since 1986. When adding new forms of newspaper, the readership level is very stable even among young persons. It can be problematized, however, what should be considered as a newspaper in the 21st century. Evening tabloids online is not the same as a subscribed local morning paper regarding content and function.

- Online interactivity and participation within journalistic and other contexts seems to be more and more of an important topic, in the publishing field as well as in discussions about democ-racy and political issues. With new ICT technology everyone online could easily produce and publish content, which is usually considered positive in modern democratic societies. Editors and journalists in mainstream media have shown to be somewhat reluctant to audience as co-producers and to user-generated content. A national Swedish questionnaire survey also shows a quite reluctant audience with only little interest in participating in creating content on news sits and blogs. It seems that those who are participating in these senses are younger persons who are often willing to try new applications online and who seem to consider this kind of activity initially being more of entertainment then of use in every day life.

- With new media technology everyone online could easily participate in creating news content. Audience interacting is not necessary seen as a positive device by editors and journalists. A Swedish mail questionnaire survey shows that there is only little interest in participating in creating content on news sites from an audience point of view. Those who are actually com-menting and writing blogs seems to consider use as pleasure rather than part taking. Use of interactive facilities tends to strengthen the gap between highly and lowly resourced people.
