  • Mobile applications development on Apple and Google platforms
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Communications of the Association for Information Systems. - 1529-3181. ; 29:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The uptake of Internet-enabled multifunctional mobile devices is an emerging area within software development. This article examines the under-researched area of mobile application developers and considers some of the current challenges facing this sector within the IT workforce. We frame our study within the wider context of the evolution of the industry in order to illustrate how the emerging business model of mobile application development shapes the everyday practices of systems developers, specifically those working on iPhone and Android platforms. Drawing on qualitative research carried out in Sweden, the UK, and the U.S., we analyze developers’ experiences in order to illustrate how they respond and adapt to the turbulent environment of the IT sector.

  • Motivational profiles of toolkit users – iPhone and Android developers
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology Marketing. - 1741-878X .- 1741-8798. ; 6:1, s. 36-56
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Toolkits for development and distribution of mobile applications can potentially influence the ecosystem for mobile services. While these toolkits began to surface in the late 1990s, it was not until 2008, when Apple launched its App Store, that their potential became more visible. For these toolkits to create value to all the different stakeholders, we need to understand these innovation milieus and their inhabitants, areas that are becoming increasingly important yet under-researched in the literature. In this paper, we address the questions of who the pioneering users of the Apple and Android owned toolkits are, what attracted them to the mobile application market, and what affected their choice of platform for mobile application development. Emerging from the analysis are four different developer profiles of early adopters of the Android and iPhone platforms.

  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Conference on Information Systems 2010 (ICIS 2010). - Red Hook : Curran Associates, Inc.. - 9780615418988

    • As the mobile phone industry converges with the IT/software industry, the emerging internetenabled multifunctional mobile devices are bringing together many diverse stakeholders. This paper examines the under-researched area of mobile application developers. We frame our study within the wider context of the mobile application industry in order to illustrate how the business models of large IT firms shape the everyday practices of systems developers, specifically those working on iPhone and Android platforms. By broadening out the study in this way we are able to situate seemingly new and distinctive technological artefacts and practices and show how they build on a number of continuing trends within the field. Drawing on qualitative data with developers working in this emerging market, we analyse their practices in order to (a) provide detail on this under-studied area and (b) show the ways in which developers adapt to the turbulent environment of the IT sector.

  • Living Labs are innovation catalysts
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Innovation through Knowledge Transfer 2010. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Science+Business Media B.V.. - 9783642205071 ; , s. 253-264
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Living labs are increasingly facilitating new ways to stimulate innovation. They offer the possibility to catalyse how innovation can be carried out, focusing on user communities supported by information technology. However, living labs are poorly understood by the business community, in particular by small to medium companies who arguably have the potential to benefit most from accessing the services provided by living labs. This position paper sets out the context for the rising popularity of living labs, explaining how public-private-academic partnerships offer new ways or carrying out innovation activities that are increasingly user-orientated. The paper also discusses the issues and opportunities arising from this new approach.

  • Exploring users motivation in innovation communities
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management. - 1368-275X .- 1741-5098. ; 14:4, s. 298-314
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A rapid growth of technologies supporting user interaction on the Internet, such as social networking sites and other virtual communities, can be seen today. These virtual communities have been shown to be of great value to companies that want to involve users in their innovation processes. However, in order to guide organisations on how to utilise their innovation intermediary communities, more knowledge is needed regarding who they are and their motivational drivers for participating in a community. The aim of this paper therefore is to explore who the users are and what motivates them to contribute to innovation processes in an innovation intermediary community. The main findings of our study indicate that users' motivation to participate is influenced by community type as well as technology adoption type. This study show that in innovation intermediary communities, one important motivational factor for users is learning.

  • Living Labs – real-world experiments to support open service innovation
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: eChallenges e-2011 Conference. - : IIMC International Information Management Corporation. - 9781905824274
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In today’s competitive and dynamic market it is of vital importance for organizations to innovate their processes, products and services to survive. One emerging concept that assists these demands is the open service innovation approach that strives to open up organisational borders to support a continuous outflow and inflow of innovations. In this paper the aim is two-folded, firstly we aim to explore how a Living Lab approach with real-world tests can contribute in open innovation processes and secondly we aim to identify important aspects an organisation aiming to implement the concept needs to grapple with. In our study users tested and experimented with energy meters and energy visualisation tools in their home for 6 months with the aim to further develop the innovation. We have found that by applying real-world experimentation users contributed to the innovation in four different dimensions. We also found that an open innovation approach requires an organisation that is communicative which entails strategies and structures to support that role.
