  • A snapshot of terror: Acute posttraumatic reactions to the September 11 attack.
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Acute reactions to trauma and psychotherapy: A multidisciplinary and international perspective. ; , s. 69-84
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract in UndeterminedObjective To investigate acute posttraumatic reactions and forms of coping to the September 11 attack. Method A Web TV nationwide, representative sample of individuals 13 years or older (N=3134) was evaluated within three weeks of the attack. Measures included the SASRQ, the brief version of the COPE, and questions about demographics and attitudes toward the attackers. Results Residents of New York City, women, young adults (but not teens), and people recently immigrated into the country experienced more distress about the attack. There was a positive linear association between hours of watching TV news related to the attack and distress, and a small positive association between hostility toward the perpetrators, TV watching, and distress. Income, religion, education, and ethnicity did not have an effect on distress. Maladaptive coping strategies and TV watching explained considerably more variance than did demographics. Conclusions Reactions to acute trauma seem to depend on the lack of appropriate coping strategies. The curvilinear relationship between age and posttraumatic distress urges caution when interpreting previous findings about age and posttraumatic reactions. The association between media exposure, coping styles, and acute distress among teens extends previous findings and deserves further investigation.

  • Acute reactions to trauma and psychotherapy: A multidisciplinary and international perspective
  • 2005
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This unique single source combines cutting-edge research analysis with practical advice for clinicians and researchers dealing with reactions to trauma. In this well-referenced book, seasoned researchers and clinicians share their expertise on diagnosis and evaluation, risk and process factors, and prevention and early intervention. In addition to an essential overview of the state of the literature on acute reactions to trauma, Acute Reactions to Trauma and Psychotherapy: A Multidisciplinary and International Perspective presents immediately useful clinical considerations and interventions that are effective in practice with children and adults and recommends directions for further research.

  • Should conversion disorder be reclassified as a dissociative disorder in DSM-V?
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Psychosomatics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0033-3182. ; 48:5, s. 369-378
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Pseudoneurological symptoms (i.e., conversion disorder), historically subsumed within the "hysteria" concept alongside phenomena such as psychogenic amnesia and multiple personality disorder have been classified as somatoform disorders since DSM-III. Since then, there have been repeated calls to reclassify conversion disorder with the dissociative disorders, as in ICD-10. The authors review issues such as the high correlations between pseudoneurological and dissociative symptoms, the high rates of trauma reported for both groups, and the position that these phenomena share underlying processes. Although reintegrating pseudoneurological symptoms with the dissociative disorders is not without complications, there is a strong case for such a reclassification.

  • A note of caution on the Waterloo-Stanford Group Scale of hypnotic susceptibility: a brief communication.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1744-5183 .- 0020-7144. ; 57:2, s. 222-226
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The scant literature on the sequelae of hypnotizability-measurement instruments indicates that different scales produce different reactions. The Waterloo-Stanford Group Scale of Hypnotic Susceptibility, Form C (WSGC) was developed as a group version of the Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale, Form C (SHSS:C). Parallel to the literature showing that the SHSS:C can produce more negative aftereffects than the Harvard Group Scale of Hypnotic Susceptibility, Form A, we report preliminary descriptive statistics documenting the infrequent occurrence of negative reactions to the WSGC age-regression item. We recommend that experimenters take this matter into consideration and, at the very least, ensure the presence of a clinician with hypnotic experience during the administration of the WSGC.

  • A psychotherapist haunted by a nonsensical plot [Review of the motion picture Gothika]
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books. ; 50:23 Article 15
  • Recension (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Gothika breaks new ground in forensic psychology by implying a new defense: innocent by reason of spirit possession. The film, on its surface, deals with a number of other psychological issues. Its heroine, Dr. Miranda Gray, is a criminal psychologist who works in an institution for the criminally insane. There is discussion of repression as a "survival tool," episodes of apparent psychogenic amnesia, and speculations on the psychology of serial rapists and killers. All of these, however, are but a flimsy cover for a poorly constructed, illogical plot that does as much disservice to the presentation of psychological matters as to the enjoyment of a good ghost story.

  • A solid introduction to clinical hypnosis. [Review of the book Essential of Clinical Hypnosis]
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books. ; 51:50 Article 18
  • Recension (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Reviews the book, Essentials of Clinical Hypnosis: An Evidence-Based Approach by Steven Jay Lynn and Irving Kirsch (see record 2005-13464-000). Steven Jay Lynn and Irving Kirsch are two of the most prolific and best-regarded hypnosis researchers in the world, besides working as clinicians, so they can discuss authoritatively both the empirical support for different hypnotic interventions and provide verbatim hypnotic scripts and discussion of practical clinical considerations. Both authors endorse a psychosocial approach to hypnosis theory and research and prefer cognitive-behavioral interventions. To their merit, however, they have also integrated into their text some verbalizations and concepts (e.g., utilization) based mostly on the clinical work of Milton Erickson (see Yapko, 2003) and, although they do not cover it in depth, refer approvingly to psychodynamic approaches to hypnosis. The book provides a comprehensive and empirically supported introduction to the clinical use of hypnosis, which various meta-analyses have shown to powerfully enhance both psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral psychotherapies.

  • All in the family [Review of the motion picture Requiem]
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Book. - : Portico. - 1554-0138. ; 52:31
  • Recension (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Reviews the film, Requiem, directed by Hans-Christian Schmid (2006). This award-winning (for both its star, Sandra Hüller, and the film itself) German film is based on the case of Anneliese Michel, a 23-year-old German woman who died in 1976, probably of starvation (she weighed 68 lb. just before her death) and exhaustion, after 67 exorcism rites. Hüller's nuanced performance chills the spine far more than Hollywood special effects because she has enough versatility and depth to show how close the angelical and demoniacal sides of humanity are to each other. Requiem closely resembles both thematically and stylistically the 1971 film Family Life (Loach & Mercer, 1971), which was influenced by the antipsychiatry movement. That film depicts a teenage girl's psychological collapse after being forced by her family to undergo an abortion and electroconvulsive therapy. Requiem has the same type of no-frills, undertone filmmaking, which actually highlights the horror of the events chronicled. The director meticulously reveals the gradual disintegration of Anneliese as it becomes evident that her attempts to go to a university and carve out an independent life become literally a life-death struggle against a repressive family and a religion willing to destroy her to maintain their sense of propriety.
