- Tl2Ba2CuO6 (Tl-2201) thin films were synthesised on single crystal LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 substrates and on bicrystal LaAlO3 by an ex-situ process. Depending on thallium content and processing conditions, the films were orthorhombic or tetragonal. Tc was in the range 30 – 92 K while Jc reached 4.106A/cm2 at 12 K. By oxygen depletion, Tc was increased by 15 – 20 K for some films.

- Severe Plasmodium falciparum malaria is characterized by excessive sequestration of infected and uninfected erythrocytes in the microvasculature of the affected organ. Rosetting, the adhesion of P. falciparum–infected erythrocytes to uninfected erythrocytes is a virulent parasite phenotype associated with the occurrence of severe malaria. Here we report on the identification by single-cell reverse transcriptase PCR and cDNA cloning of the adhesive ligand P. falciparum erythrocyte membrane protein 1 (PfEMP1). Rosetting PfEMP1 contains clusters of glycosaminoglycan-binding motifs. A recombinant fusion protein (Duffy binding-like 1–glutathione S transferase; Duffy binding-like-1–GST) was found to adhere directly to normal erythrocytes, disrupt naturally formed rosettes, block rosette reformation, and bind to a heparin-Sepharose matrix. The adhesive interactions could be inhibited with heparan sulfate or enzymes that remove heparan sulfate from the cell surface whereas other enzymes or similar glycosaminoglycans of a like negative charge did not affect the binding. PfEMP1 is suggested to be the rosetting ligand and heparan sulfate, or a heparan sulfate–like molecule, the receptor both for PfEMP1 binding and naturally formed erythrocyte rosettes.

- A randomized trial comparing 3 manufacturing consistency lots of a combination hepatitis A/hepatitis B vaccine to each other and to hepatitis A vaccine and hepatitis B vaccine given separately and concurrently was done to evaluate safety, tolerability, and immunogenicity. Healthy volunteers >/=11 years of age were divided into 4 groups. Each of 3 groups received a separate consistency lot of the combination vaccine, and 1 group received separate but concurrent injections of hepatitis A and hepatitis B vaccines. Injections were given at weeks 0 and 24. The combination vaccine was generally well tolerated. The hepatitis A portion of the combination vaccine produced clinically acceptable high seropositivity rates 4 and 52 weeks after the first injection. The hepatitis B portion of the vaccine did not produce clinically acceptable seropositivity rates 4 weeks after the second injection. Lack of antibody production may be attributed, at least in part, to immunologic interference.

- The vortex dynamics in a Tl2Ba2CuO6 (Tl-2201) thin film with a critical temperature T-c = 80.8 K has been studied by electrical resistivity measurements for magnetic fields 0 less than or equal to B less than or equal to 12 T. The vortex glass line, as determined from the disappearance of linear resistivity, was found to be well described by B-g (T) = B-0[(1 - T/T-c)/(T/T-c)(alpha), with B-0 approximate to 0.65 T and alpha approximate to 1.9. The glass line of Tl-2201 is observed to be located below the one of Tl2Ba2CaCu2O8+delta (Tl-2212) in a magnetic phase diagram based on a reduced temperature scale T/T-c, thus suggesting a higher anisotropy for Tl-2201.
