- To improve the sound environment along a popular esplanade in Lyon, France, a 1 m high vegetated noise barrier was erected to protect against noise from an adjacent road. The barrier was made of a metallic structure, filled with a substrate on which 40 plants per square meter were grown on both sides. The effect of the barrier was evaluated by acoustic measurements conducted before and after the barrier was erected, as well as, by a questionnaire study in which pedestrians were asked to assess the sound environment both behind and at the side of the barrier. The barrier reduced the sound pressure level from about 67 to 62 dB (LAeq), at sitting height (1.2 m), 3.5 m from the roadside. Questionnaires responses (n = 349) from the same location showed that the barrier reduced road-traffic noise annoyance, and increased the overall quality of the sound environment by making it slightly calmer and slightly more pleasant. However, these effects were fairly small and the sound environment was still perceived as annoying by most of the respondents. Overall, the result thus suggested that the barrier made the sound environment better but not good. Further work will include detailed psychoacoustic analysis of the questionnaire data, as well as listening experiments using binaural recordings from the site.

- Earlier studies have reported on both proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory activities of cholera toxin (CT). As CT is a powerful adjuvant, we were interested in identifying genes with a possible involvement in these functions. A global gene expression analysis in mouse B cells showed that CT regulated <100 annotated genes, which encoded transcription factors, G proteins, cell-cycle regulators, and immunoregulating molecules. Interestingly, CT regulated the expression of the signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT)3 gene and influenced the level and activation of both isoforms STAT3alpha and STAT3beta, in vitro in a B-cell line and in Peyer's patch (PP) B cells and in vivo in freshly isolated splenic B cells from CT-treated mice. This effect was cAMP dependent and was not seen with CTB. B cells pre-exposed to CT were significantly more susceptible to the activation of STAT3 by interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-10. This exerted a stronger inhibitory effect of IL-10 on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated B-cell proliferation and cytokine production (IL-6). Moreover, IgG1 and IgA production induced by LPS and IL-10 were enhanced by the addition of CT to cultures of PP or splenic B cells. This is the first study to provide a molecular mechanism that can reconcile previous findings of proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory effects by CT adjuvant.Mucosal Immunology advance online publication 7 April 2010. doi:10.1038/mi.2010.16.

- Slutsatser Godartad prostataförstoring (benign prostatahyperplasi, BPH) är ett vanligt tillstånd som med stigande ålder drabbar i princip alla män. En del av dessa män får urineringsproblem och cirka 4 500 opereras varje år för en förstorad prostata. Många med lindrigare besvär behandlas med läkemedel eller behöver ingen behandling alls. Avflödeshinder kan obehandlat ge allvarlig urinretention som skadar njurarna, och en urinstämma kan vara livshotande. För att avgränsa den grupp av män där problemen med urineringen beror på en förstorad prostata används ett tiotal olika diagnostiska metoder. När det gäller behandling finns det flera olika kirurgiska metoder, varav några är väl etablerade och andra av mer experimentell karaktär. Under 1990-talet har också flera läkemedel introducerats. SBU har därför bedömt att det funnits ett behov av att göra en systematisk genomgång av den vetenskapliga grunden för dessa olika metoder. Nedan följer de viktigaste slutsatserna av arbetet.

Evolution of overall survival (OS) in patients (pts) with incident NSCLC in Denmark and Sweden : A SCAN-LEAF study analysis from the I-O Optimise initiative

- Background: As part of I-O Optimise, a multinational research platform providing real-world insights into the management of lung cancers, the SCAN-LEAF study aims to describe the epidemiology, clinical care, and outcomes for pts with NSCLC in Scandinavia. Here, we report temporal OS trends among pts diagnosed with incident NSCLC from 2005 to 2015 in Denmark and Sweden. Methods: The SCAN-LEAF Danish and Swedish cohorts were established by linking respective national registries and include all adult pts diagnosed with incident NSCLC from Jan 2005 to Dec 2015 (follow-up to Dec 2016). The Kaplan–Meier method was used to estimate OS at 1, 3, and 5 yrs by histology (non-squamous cell [NSQ] or squamous cell [SQ]), TNM stage, and yr of diagnosis; changes in OS over time were assessed using the Cochrane–Armitage test. Results: 31,939 pts in Denmark and 30,067 pts in Sweden were diagnosed with NSCLC from 2005 to 2015. Most were diagnosed at stage IV (51.6% and 48.4%, respectively) and had NSQ histology (54.4% and 60.4%). Statistically significant trends (P < 0.05) for improved OS accompanied by an absolute OS rate increase of > 5% over the analysis period were seen for NSQ pts at 1 yr for all stages in both countries (Table); at 3 yrs for stages I–IIIB in Denmark (P ≤ 0.027), and stages I–II (P ≤ 0.0013) in Sweden; and at 5 yrs for stages I–II (P ≤ 0.026) in both countries. For SQ pts, this was seen only at 1 yr for stage IIIA in Denmark and stage I in Sweden (Table), and at 5 yrs for stage IIIA in Denmark (p = 0.02). Conclusions: Despite some improvements between 2005 and 2015, mainly in the short-term survival of pts with early-stage NSCLC, long-term OS rates for pts with late-stage disease did not change significantly and remained low. Even in pts with early-stage disease, OS outcomes were suboptimal, with a particular unmet need in the SQ population. Future analyses including data after 2015 will evaluate the potential impact on OS of increased use of new TKIs and immune checkpoint inhibitors.

- A new scheme to determine the neutrino mass matrix is proposed using atomic de-excitation between two states of a few eV energy spacing. The determination of the smallest neutrino mass of the order of 1 meV and neutrino mass type, Majorana or Dirac, becomes possible, if one can coherently excite more than 1 gram of atoms using two lasers.

- Objectives The aim of this study was to investigate if a synthetic granular calcium phosphate compound (CPC) and a composite bisphosphonate-linked hyaluronic acid–calcium phosphate hydrogel (HABP·CaP) induced similar or more amount of bone as bovine mineral in a modified sinus lift rabbit model. Material and methods Eighteen adult male New Zeeland White rabbits, received randomly one of the two test materials on a random side of the face, and bovine mineral as control on the contralateral side. In a sinus lift, the sinus mucosa was elevated and a titanium mini-implant was placed in the alveolar bone. Augmentation material (CPC, HABP·CaP or bovine bone) was applied in the space around the implant. The rabbits were euthanized three months after surgery and qualitative and histomorphometric evaluation were conducted. Histomorphometric evaluation included three different regions of interest (ROIs) and the bone to implant contact on each installed implant. Results Qualitative assessment (p = <.05), histomorphometric evaluations (p = < .01), and implant incorporation (p = <.05) showed that CPC and bovine mineral induced similar amount of bone and more than the HABP·CaP hydrogel. Conclusion CPC induced similar amount of bone as bovine mineral and both materials induced more bone than HABP·CaP hydrogel. Clinical significance The CPC is suggested as a synthetic alternative for augmentations in the maxillofacial area.
