  • Open self-paced introductory course in nuclear engineering – How to guarantee student learning
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Engineering and Design. - 0029-5493. ; 417
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ease of access to various free educational resources on the internet has often the disadvantage of resulting in scattered and fragmented knowledge and skills. Students “pick and choose” what they believe to be relevant for their learning but lack the necessary overview of the field to select those resources adequately and properly. This also applies to nuclear engineering, for which educational materials can be found on the web. Although some Massive Open Online Courses exist in this area, access to those often requires registration, or those courses are given during limited times. Following the Open Educational Resources initiative, there was thus a need to develop educational materials that are truly open and freely accessible to all, while guaranteeing student learning. This paper reports on efforts along those lines, which resulted in the planning, development, implementation and offering of three self-paced open course modules in nuclear engineering. Through a careful course design and use of the various features of a specific educator-to-educator Learning Management System, the students are guided through highly structured course materials capitalizing on a diversity of activities proposed to the students. Through self-assessment competence tests, the students can measure their mastery of the field, ultimately resulting in the delivery of a certificate of successful completion of the modules. This paper also presents, from a teacher’s perspective, some lessons learnt that could benefit other teachers interested in embarking on similar endeavours.

  • THE INTERACTION BETWEEN AN ISOLATED ROUGHNESS ELEMENT AND FREE-STREAM TURBULENCE
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: ECCOMAS Congress 2022. - : Scipedia, S.L..
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Control and delay of the laminar-turbulent transition is a key parameter in reducing skin friction and drag. The flow characteristics, surface roughness, and environmental noise can affect the onset of transition. The present work investigates, numerically and experimentally, the interaction of the free-stream turbulence (FST) and an isolated cylindrical roughness element, and the resulting impact on the transition onset in a flat-plate boundary layer. High-fidelity direct numerical simulations (DNS) are performed for a roughness element immersed in the boundary layer over a flat plate with an asymmetrical leading edge, with and without FST. The numerical results are compared to hot-wire anemometry measurements performed in the Minimum Turbulence Level wind tunnel at KTH. The initial numerical and experimental results show that in the absence of FST, for the chosen flow parameters, high-and low-speed streaks are generated downstream of the roughness element while the flow remains laminar and globally stable. When FST is added, the spanwise spacing of the streaky structures changes and the transition location of the boundary layer moves upstream. It was found that the aspect ratio of the streaky structures does not vary significantly.

  • Energy Potential of Coconut and Palm Oil Residues : Selected Case Studies from Latin America and Small Island Developing States
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Renewable & sustainable energy reviews. - : Elsevier. - 1364-0321 .- 1879-0690.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Agricultural residues continue to attract interest for energy recovery purposes as a renewable, CO2 neutral and increasingly cost competitive alternative to traditional fossil fuels. The possibility of trigeneration in already established industries such as palm oil mills and coconut processing plants is very attractive especially when residues that otherwise represent a disposal problem can be utilized efficiently. Different technological scenarios for the production of electricity, process heat and biodiesel are analyzed using coconut and palm oil residues. Environmental aspects are also included in the analysis. Studies were conducted considering various scenarios to evaluate the feasibility of using these residues for energy purposes. The residues were considered to be combusted directly in steam boilers while steam turbines were used to generate electricity. Biodiesel is produced by transesterification of palm oil/coconut oil. The required process heat for palm oil or coconut oil processing as well as the steam required for biodiesel production is supplied by the combustion of the residues.  The results show that palm oil mills/coconut processing industries can be independent of fossil fuels.  Furthermore, they can contribute positively to the energy balance of the communities by helping reduce the dependence on fossil fuels and reducing simultaneously greenhouse gas emissions.
