  • Human chromosome 7: DNA sequence and biology
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Science (New York, N.Y.). - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 1095-9203 .- 0036-8075. ; 300:5620, s. 767-772
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • DNA sequence and annotation of the entire human chromosome 7, encompassing nearly 158 million nucleotides of DNA and 1917 gene structures, are presented. To generate a higher order description, additional structural features such as imprinted genes, fragile sites, and segmental duplications were integrated at the level of the DNA sequence with medical genetic data, including 440 chromosome rearrangement breakpoints associated with disease. This approach enabled the discovery of candidate genes for developmental diseases including autism.

  • Estimation of Performance Loss Due to Delay in Channel Feedback in MIMO Systems
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: 2004 IEEE 60th Vehicular Technology Conference, 2004. VTC2004-Fall.. - 0780385217 ; 3, s. 1619-1622
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Latency of available channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter in time-varying channels greatly affects the performance of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. We have derived a simple algorithm to calculate an approximation of the expected performance loss based on the most recent channel feedback. The proposed algorithm can be used to determine the maximum tolerable channel feedback delay for each particular channel realization.

  • Laminin isoform-specific promotion of adhesion and migration of human bone marrow progenitor cells
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Blood. - : American Society of Hematology. - 1528-0020 .- 0006-4971. ; 101:3, s. 877-885
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Laminins are alphabetagamma heterotrimeric extracellular proteins that regulate cellular functions by adhesion to integrin and nonintegrin receptors. Laminins containing alpha4 and alpha5 chains are expressed in bone marrow, but their interactions with hematopoietic progenitors are unknown. We studied human bone marrow cell adhesion to laminin-10/11 (alpha5beta1gamma1/alpha5beta2gamma1), laminin-8 (alpha4beta1gamma1), laminin-1 (alpha1beta1gamma1), and fibronectin. About 35% to 40% of CD34(+) and CD34(+)CD38(-) stem and progenitor cells adhered to laminin-10/11, and 45% to 50% adhered to fibronectin, whereas they adhered less to laminin-8 and laminin-1. Adhesion of CD34(+)CD38(-) cells to laminin-10/11 was maximal without integrin activation, whereas adhesion to other proteins was dependent on protein kinase C activation by 12-tetradecanoyl phorbol-13-acetate (TPA). Fluorescence-activated cell-sorting (FACS) analysis showed expression of integrin alpha6 chain on most CD34(+) and CD34(+)CD38(-) cells. Integrin alpha6 and beta1 chains were involved in binding of both cell fractions to laminin-10/11 and laminin-8. Laminin-10/11 was highly adhesive to lineage-committed myelomonocytic and erythroid progenitor cells and most lymphoid and myeloid cell lines studied, whereas laminin-8 was less adhesive. In functional assays, both laminin-8 and laminin-10/11 facilitated stromal-derived factor-1alpha (SDF-1alpha)-stimulated transmigration of CD34(+) cells, by an integrin alpha6 receptor-mediated mechanism. In conclusion, we demonstrate laminin isoform-specific adhesive interactions with human bone marrow stem, progenitor, and more differentiated cells. The cell-adhesive laminins affected migration of hematopoietic progenitors, suggesting a physiologic role for laminins during hematopoiesis. (C) 2003 by The American Society of Hematology.

  • Effects of intense laser irradiation on Raman intensity features of carbon nanotubes
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 65:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effect of intense laser irradiation on the features of Raman intensity of carbon nanotubes (CNT's) has been examined. The intensity of the D band decreases and the relative intensity between the G peaks changes with increasing laser power density (LPD) and remain unchanged with subsequent decrease in LPD. This behavior is different from the reversible variation of the G band frequency in the same process of power increase and subsequent decrease. It has been demonstrated that such irreversible change in intensity features originates from sample purification. This result suggests a simple and fast CNT purification method using intense laser irradiation.

  • Abnormal anti-Stokes Raman scattering of carbon nanotubes
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 66:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abnormal anti-Stokes Raman scattering (AASR) was unambiguously observed in carbon nanotubes (CNT's). In contrast to traditional Raman scattering theory, the absolute value of the Raman frequency of the anti-Stokes peak is not the same as that of the corresponding Stokes peak. It was demonstrated that AASR scattering originates from the unique nanoscale cylindrical structure of CNT's that can be considered naturally as a graphite structure with an intrinsic defect from its rolling. The double-resonance Raman scattering theory was applied to interpret the scattering mechanism of the AASR phenomenon successfully and quantitatively.

  • A simple method for reconstructing a high-quality NDVI time-series data set based on the Savitzky-Golay filter
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Remote Sensing of Environment. - : Elsevier BV. - 0034-4257. ; 91:3-4, s. 332-344
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) time-series data, derived from NOAA/AVFIRR, SPOT/VEGETATION, TERRA or AQUA/MODIS, has been successfully used in research regarding global environmental change, residual noise in the NDVI time-series data, even after applying strict pre-processing, impedes further analysis and risks generating erroneous results. Based on the assumptions that NDVI time-series follow annual cycles of growth and decline of vegetation, and that clouds or poor atmospheric conditions usually depress NDVI values, we have developed in the present study a simple but robust method based on the Savitzky-Golay filter to smooth out noise in NDVI time-series, specifically that caused primarily by cloud contamination and atmospheric variability. Our method was developed to make data approach the upper NDVI envelope and to reflect the changes in NDVI patterns via an iteration process. From the results obtained by applying the newly developed method to a 10-day MVC SPOT VGT-S product, we provide optimized parameters for the new method and compare this technique with the BISE algorithm and Fourier-based fitting method. Our results indicate that the new method is more effective in obtaining high-quality NDVI time-series.

  • Mass transport inside a flowing electrolyte direct methanol fuel cell
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: ASME 2004 2nd International Conference on Fuel Cell Science, Engineering and Technology, FUELCELL 2004. - : American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). - 0791841650 - 9780791841655 ; , s. 107-112
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this work, analytical mass transfer models are developed for two different types of Direct Methanol Fuel Cells (DMFCs). One type is a conventional assembly with a proton exchange membrane (PEM) and the other utilizes a flowing electrolyte in addition to a PEM to reduce methanol crossover. These models are used to predict methanol crossover behaviour that is a major issue affecting the efficiencies of PEM-DMFCs. It is shown that using flowing electrolyte DMFCs can lead to a significant decrease in methanol crossover with a corresponding increase in electrical efficiency of the cell. Combined with the experiments carried out in a previous work, the simulation showed significant efficiency improvements when using a flowing electrolyte DMFC compared to a traditional PEM assembly.
