- Ten C-2-symmetric cyclic urea and sulfamide derivatives have been synthesized from L-mannonic gamma-lactone and D-mannitol. The results of experimental measurement of their inhibitory potencies against HIV-1 protease were compared to calculated free energies of binding derived from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The compounds were selected, firstly, to enable elucidation of the role of stereochemistry for binding affinity (1a-d) and, secondly, to allow evaluation of the effects of variation in the link to the P1 and P1' phenyl groups on affinity (la and 2-5). Thirdly, compounds with hydrogen bond-accepting or -donating groups attached to the phenyl groups in the P2 and P2' side chains (6 and 7) were selected. Binding free energies were estimated by a linear response method, whose predictive power for estimating binding affinities from MD simulations was demonstrated.

- We investigate the possibility that gamma-ray bursts originate in a concentric spherical shell with a given average redshift and find that this is indeed compatible with the data from the third BATSE (3B) catalog. It is also shown that there is enough freedom in the choice of unknown burst properties to allow even for extremely large distances to the majority of bursts. Therefore, we speculate about an early, and very energetic, origin of bursts, and suggest that they come from phase transitions in massive objects of pure quark matter, left over from the Big Bang.

- Noradrenergic locus coeruleus (LC) efferents to the forebrain suppress seizures in several models of epilepsy. Using in situ hybridization, we demonstrate that tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and norepinephrine transporter (NET) but not vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (VMAT2) mRNA levels are transiently elevated in LC neurons following kainic acid-induced status epilepticus. These increases of TH and NET mRNAs and presumably of the proteins themselves might enhance synthesis and reuptake of NE postictally.

- In several recent studies, a net stimulation of bacterial growth has been demonstrated after exposing humic surface waters to solar radiation or artificial ultraviolet radiation. This stimulation has been attributed to a photochemical release of bioavailable carbon or nitrogen compounds (ammonium). In a synoptic experiment, we exposed 0.2 mu m filtered water from 12 different habitats in a river system, dominated by allochthonous carbon input, to mild artificial UV radiation. A significant photochemical release of carboxylic acids of low molecular weight occurred. Furthermore, the exposure increased carbon-limited bacterial yield on average by a factor of 1.7. No photochemical production of free ammonium could be detected, which was in accordance with the lack of effects of radiation on bacterial growth yield under nitrogen-limited conditions. We conclude that, in boreal systems dominated by allochthonous carbon input, photochemical production of bioavailable carbon rather than nitrogen compounds is likely to positively influence the total substrate pool available for bacterial utilization.
