  • Novel heterocycle-based organic molecules with two-photon induced blue fluorescent emission
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Chemistry. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 0959-9428 .- 1364-5501. ; 13:4, s. 708-711
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two-photon absorption and two-photon induced blue emission characteristics of a series of heterocycle-based organic molecules are investigated experimentally and by quantum-chemical computations. The molecules consist of a typical A-pi-A' structure, where heterocycle, styryl and formyl groups are employed as A, pi-conjugated and A' moieties, respectively. Experimental results indicate that significant enhancements in the blue emission efficiency and two-photon absorption cross-sections can be achieved by replacing S and O atoms with an N atom in the heterocycle acceptor moiety, which is also supported by the quantum-chemical computations. Additionally, larger two-photon absorption cross-sections can be obtained by choosing appropriate solvents, as indicated by the computations.

  • Abnormal anti-Stokes Raman scattering of carbon nanotubes
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 66:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abnormal anti-Stokes Raman scattering (AASR) was unambiguously observed in carbon nanotubes (CNT's). In contrast to traditional Raman scattering theory, the absolute value of the Raman frequency of the anti-Stokes peak is not the same as that of the corresponding Stokes peak. It was demonstrated that AASR scattering originates from the unique nanoscale cylindrical structure of CNT's that can be considered naturally as a graphite structure with an intrinsic defect from its rolling. The double-resonance Raman scattering theory was applied to interpret the scattering mechanism of the AASR phenomenon successfully and quantitatively.

  • Beta-delayed multiparticle emission studies at ISOL-type facilities
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0375-9474. ; 746, s. 243-243
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report here on the recent beta-decay studies made at ISOL-type Facilities to determine the multiparticle breakup mechanism of excited states in light nuclei by studying them in full kinematics. In particular the results obtained for the A = 9 isobars and the breakup of the 12.7 MeV state in C-12 of unnatural parity are discussed. The breakup of the latter has been debated since more than a decade. Mirror beta transitions in the A = 9 chain are compared and a large asymmetry factor is deduced for the transitions to high excitation energy in Be-9 (11.8 MeV) and B-9 (12.2 MeV) fed in the beta-decay of Li-9 and C-9 respectively. It is shown that the asymmetry is not due to experimental problems or differences in the mechanisms of breakup or in the spin of the states. As no asymmetry is found in the gs to gs transition it must be due to the particular structure of these excited states. The controversy on the breakup mechanism of the 12.7 MeV state is resolved.

  • News on C-12 from beta-decay studies
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0375-9474. ; 738, s. 59-65
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We discuss the importance of the spectroscopic properties of the resonances of C-12 just above the 3alpha-threshold, and review the existing experimental information of this region with emphasis on 0(+) and 2(+) states. A new experimental approach for studying the beta-decays of B-12 and N-12 is presented based on techniques developed in the context of Radioactive beam (rare isotope) physics. Finally preliminary results from an ongoing analysis of two recent experiments are given.

  • A deletion polymorphism in the RIZ gene, a female sex steroid hormone receptor coactivator, exhibits decreased response to estrogen in vitro and associates with low bone mineral density in young Swedish women
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. - : The Endocrine Society. - 0021-972X .- 1945-7197. ; 89:12, s. 6173-6178
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Low bone mineral density (BMD) is a major risk factor for osteoporotic fracture, and the trait is under genetic control by a large number of genes. It is recognized that estrogen plays an important role in the maintenance of bone mass by binding to estrogen receptor a (ERa). RIZ1 has previously been shown to be a specific ERa coactivator and strongly enhances its function both in vivo and in vitro. We performed in vitro studies comparing the abilities of RIZ1 P704 polymorphic variants (homozygous presence, P704+; absence, P704-; heterozygosity P704+/- of a proline at position 704) to coactivate the ERa and also examined the polymorphism associated to BMD of 343 Swedish women, aged 20-39 yr. The expression vector containing P704- RIZ1 showed an impaired response in coactivating ERa in a ligand- and dose-dependent manner compared with P704+ RIZ (P < 0.0001). The genotype frequencies were 19% (P704+), 32% (P704-), and 49% (P704+/-) and were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. BMD at the heel was higher in the P704+ genotype group than in the P704+/- group (P = 0.02), which was evident also after corrections for fat and lean mass (P = 0.03). We conclude that RIZ1 may be a new candidate gene for involvement in the variation seen in BMD.

  • Dendritic cells derived from patients with multiple sclerosis show high CD1a and low CD86 expression
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Multiple sclerosis (Houndmills, Basingstoke, England). - : SAGE Publications. - 1352-4585 .- 1477-0970. ; 7:2, s. 95-99
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dendritic cells (DC) are important antigen presenting cells (APC) and play a major role in initiating and orchestrating immune responses by priming T cells. Little is known about involvement of DC in multiple sclerosis (MS), where auto-aggressive T cells against myelin autoantigens are considered to contribute to inflammation and demyelination in the central nervous system. In this study, we compared phenotype and cytokine secretion of DC from patients with MS, other neurological diseases (OND) and healthy subjects. DC were generated from blood adherent mononuclear cells (MNC) by culture for 7 days with granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) and interleukin-4 (IL-4). The yield and morphology of DC were similar in MS patients and controls. In both, the DC phenotype was that of immature myeloid lineage, comprising CD1a+ and CD11c+. The proportion of CD1a+ DC, being important for presentation of lipid antigens to T cells, was higher in MS patients compared to controls. The proportion of CD86+ DC, a co-stimulatory molecule that is assumed to promote Th2 differentiation, was low in MS. Low proportions of CD86+ DC were only observed in untreated MS patients but not in patients treated with IFN-b. Production of IL-10 and IL-12 p40 by DC did not differ in MS patients and controls. These findings indicate that alterations of functionally important surface molecules on DC are associated with MS.
