  • Limited protective effect of the CCR5 Delta 32/CCR5 Delta 32 genotype on human immunodeficiency virus infection incidence in a cohort of patients with hemophilia and selection for genotypic X4 virus
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of Infectious Diseases. - 1537-6613. ; 187:2, s. 215-225
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The relationship among CCR5 genotype, cytomegalovirus infection, and disease progression and death was studied among 159 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients with hemophilia. One patient (0.6%) had the CCR5Delta32/CCR5Delta32 genotype (which occurs in similar to2% of the Scandinavian population) and a rapid disease course. His HIV V3 region contained genotypic features attributable to X4 virus and resembled functionally verified X4 virus and virus from patients treated with a CD4 cell-stimulating drug, tucaresol. Age-related differences in disease progression rate and survival time were seen for CCR5/CCR5 patients. Surprisingly, no protective effect of the CCR5/CCR5Delta32 genotype on disease progression or survival was seen for children but was evident for adults. Age group-related immunologic differences might explain this variation, and transmission route and/or viral phenotype variation within donor virus may be related to the limited protection of the CCR5Delta32/ CCR5Delta32 genotype. Sequence comparisons indicate that X4 virus can be selected in vivo due to either absence of CCR5 receptors or relative increase of CXCR4 receptors.

  • A crystalline microporous narrow-bandgap semiconductor
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Angewandte Chemie International Edition. - : Wiley. - 1433-7851 .- 1521-3773. ; 43:6, s. 700-704
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A crystalline microporous semiconductor |(| K6(H 2O)6| [Sb12O18])3| [Te36] (denoted SBC-1) has been prepared, which consists of 24-ring tubular tellurium units that host 12-ring {Sb12O18} tubular units, which in turn act as hosts for K+ ions and H 2O molecules (see picture). An example of a second-order zeoate, it has a narrow bandgap of 0.25 eV and exhibits highly anisotropic electrical conductivity.

  • Structural study of Fe doped and Ni substituted thermoelectric skutterudites by combined synchrotron and neutron powder diffraction and ab initio theory
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Physics. - : AIP Publishing. - 0021-8979 .- 1089-7550. ; 96:6, s. 3148-3157
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present neutron and synchrotron powder-diffraction investigations as well as ab initio calculations to elucidate delicate structural features in doped skutterudites. Samples with assumed Fe doping were investigated (FeyCo4Sb12, y=0.4, 0.8, 1.0, and 1.6), as well as samples with formal Ni substitution (Co4-xNixSb12, x=0, 0.4, 0.8, and 1.2). The present study serves as a case story for the determination of fine structural details of thermoelectric skutterudites by diffraction methods in combination with ab initio calculations. We illustrate the problem of fluorescence in the conventional x-ray powder diffraction on the Fe-doped samples by a comparison with the neutron powder-diffraction data. On the series of the Ni-substituted samples, the neutron powder-diffraction data were collected to investigate the exact sitting of the Ni. The sample with the highest Ni substitution (Co2.8Ni1.2Sb12) was also used for high resolution, high-energy synchrotron powder diffraction measurements. These revealed that the sample consists of two skutterudite phases. A complete description of the Ni-substituted samples was obtained in tandem with ab initio calculations, which show that the system contains a Ni-rich (Co0.38Ni3.62Sb12) and a Ni-poor (Co3.76Ni0.24Sb12)) skutterudite phases.

  • Heparin-binding protein (HBP/CAP37): A missing link in neutrophil-evoked alteration of vascular permeability
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Nature Medicine. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1546-170X .- 1078-8956. ; 7:10, s. 1123-1127
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Polymorphonuclear leukocyte infiltration into tissues in host defense and inflammatory diseasecauses increased vascular permeability and edema formation through unknown mechanisms. Here, we report the involvement of a paracrine mechanism in neutrophil-evoked alteration inendothelial barrier function. We show that upon neutrophil adhesion to the endothelial lining, leukocytic 2 integrin signaling triggers the release of neutrophil-borne heparin-binding protein(HBP), also known as CAP37/azurocidin, a member of the serprocidin family of neutrophilcationic proteins. HBP induced Ca++-dependent cytoskeletal rearrangement and intercellular gapformation in endothelial-cell monolayers in vitro, and increased macromolecular efflux in microvesselsin vivo. Moreover, selective inactivation of HBP prevented the neutrophils from inducingendothelial hyperpermeability. Our data suggest a fundamental role of neutrophil-derivedHBP in the vascular response to neutrophil trafficking in inflammation. Targeting this moleculein inflammatory disease conditions offers a new strategy for prevention of endothelial barrierdysfunction caused by misdirected leukocyte activation.
