  • School children's preferences for food combinations
  • 1990
  • Ingår i: Food Quality and Preference. - 0950-3293 .- 1873-6343. ; 2:3, s. 155-165
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Students from the 4th, 8th and 11th grades (N = 177) expressed their opinions as to which foodstuffs belong together in a meal. They did this by selecting and grouping cards that depicted the names and pictures of 25 foodstuffs typically offered in their school lunches. Subjects were allowed to create up to 10 different meals under one of four instructions. The cards were dispensed from a specially designed box that could hold single or multiple copies of each food item. Younger students created significantly more meals with few components than did the older students. The types of foodstuffs selected and their groupings were highly similar across grades and for both boys and girls. The meals tended to correspond to those actually available in the school lunch program, but more than 50% of the creations were unique in that each of them was produced by one or two students. These findings suggest that school nutritionists and administrators should strive for maximum variety in their lunch menus. © 1991.

  • Predation on Settling Bivalve Larvae by Benthic Suspension Feeders - the Role of Hydrodynamics and Larval Behavior
  • 1993
  • Ingår i: Marine Ecology-Progress Series. - 0171-8630. ; 97:2, s. 183-192
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Predation by the suspension-feeding infaunal bivalve Cerastoderma edule on settling C. edule larvae was studied in a flume boundary-layer flow. The density of settled larvae was reduced by 33% in an area of 5 cm2 enclosing individual adults. Mean survival time for competent C. edule larvae drifting over sediment populated with feeding adults (380 ind. m-2) was 64 s, and 75% of the observed larvae were inhaled by adults. Observations of the siphonal currents produced by C. edule and the swimming behaviour of larvae were combined in a computer model to assess the importance of adult density and boundary-layer flow on the predation risk experienced by settling larvae. Survival of settling larvae decreased drastically with increasing adult density, whereas increased flow velocity caused only a slightly higher predation risk. Although reduction in larval settlement on the scale of individual adults may be small or moderate, inhalation of settling larvae by populations of resident suspension feeders may cause a significant decrease in settlement on a larger scale (10(1) to 10(3) m).

  • Effects of Core-valence and Core-core Correlation On the Line-strength of the Resonance Lines In Li-i and Na-i
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Physical Review A (Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics). - 1050-2947. ; 49:3, s. 2181-2184
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The resonance lines in Li I and Na I both exhibit a puzzling discrepancy between experiment and accurate ab initio calculations. Only results from a semiempirical method, that in principal neglects core-core correlation, agree with the experiments. The agreement with a multiconfiguration Hartree-Fock calculation, including only core-valence correlation, shows that this might be fortuitous. A method for including some core-core correlation is designed and gives results in excellent agreement with other accurate ab initio methods.

  • In vivo and in vitro toxicity of fractionated fish lipids, with particular regard to their content of chlorinated organic compounds
  • 1991
  • Ingår i: Pharmacology and Toxicology. - : Wiley. - 0901-9928 .- 1600-0773. ; 69:6, s. 459-471
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Six different lipid matrices (the intact lipid (IL), four lipid fractions with different polarity, and the free fatty acids (FFAs) obtained by hydrolysis of the triacylglycerol (TAG) containing fraction) were obtained from salmon (Salmo salar) and eel (Anguilla anguilla), each collected at a contaminated and a comparatively uncontaminated catch site along the coast of Scandinavia. The lipid matrices were studied in toxicological test systems representing various biological functions of different organ systems from several species and trophic levels. The results were evaluated with particular respect to the concentrations of extractable organically bound chlorine (EOCl) in the matrices tested. In some test systems, the specimens with a higher EOCl concentration appeared to be more toxic. For example, the TAG containing fraction (F2) from Idefjord eel, having a higher EOCl content than F2 from Oslofjord eel, reduced the number and hatchability of eggs laid by zebrafish. Both IL and F2 of Idefjord eel increased mortality and reduced the oxygen/nitrogen-ratio in blue mussels. Non-polar compounds (F1) from Bothnian Sea salmon induced 7-ethoxyresurofin O-deethylase (EROD) activity in rainbow trout hepatocytes, whereas F1 from Senja salmon did not. F1 from Bothnian Sea salmon also reduced the number of T-cells in foetal mouse thymus anlagen in vitro compared with the cell number in anlagen exposed to F1 from Senja salmon. A positive correlation between EOCl concentration and test response was found for EROD activity in rainbow trout hepatocytes and for ATP-leakage in Erlich ascites tumour cells when testing the phospolipid containing fraction (F4). However, in most test systems the fish oils, irrespective of EOCl content, were of low toxicity, and the observed effects need to be verified in future studies.

  • Swimming Behavior of Marine Bivalve Larvae in a Flume Boundary-Layer Flow - Evidence for near-Bottom Confinement
  • 1991
  • Ingår i: Marine Ecology-Progress Series. - 0171-8630. ; 79:1-2, s. 67-76
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The swimming behaviour of settling larvae of the bivalve Cerastoderma edule (L.) was studied in still water and in a flume boundary-layer flow. In still water and slow flow the larvae swam upward in helices with high directionality, which is interpreted as morphological geotaxis. By reducing velar propulsion larvae regularly descended towards the bottom due to gravity. In moderate and fast flow (5 to 10 cm s-1) the larvae became confined to the viscous sublayer, where they slowly drifted in the streamwise direction at 0.45 to 1.6 mm s-1, less than 1 mm above the sediment surface, periodically making contact with the bottom. At flow velocities exceeding 15 cm s-1 the steady near-bottom drift changed to bed-load transport of tumbling larvae with high probability of resuspension. Based on kinematic and force analysis of swimming behaviour we suggest that boundary-shear induced torque restricts the settling larvae to the viscous sublayer. This near-bottom confinment may explain how habitat selection in benthic bivalves is realized under natural flow regimes.

  • Fluorescent Microparticles - a New Way of Visualizing Sedimentation and Larval Settlement
  • 1991
  • Ingår i: Limnology and Oceanography. - 0024-3590. ; 36:7, s. 1471-1476
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Methods for preparing fluorescently labeled microparticles and bivalve larvae (Cerastoderma edule) are presented. The labeling is cheap, easy, and allows production of great quantities of fluorescent microparticles and larvae. Fluorescent visualization can be used as a tool to analyze hydrodynamical processes in the benthic boundary layer and to directly observe behavioral patterns in settling larvae.

  • A bactericidal antibody to Borrelia burgdorferi is directed against a variable region of the OspB protein
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Infection and Immunity. - : American Society for Microbiology (ASM). - 0019-9567 .- 1098-5522. ; 62:5, s. 2037-2045
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Borrelia burgdorferi, an agent of Lyme disease, is killed by some monoclonal antibodies in the absence of complement or phagocytes. In the present study, the bactericidal action of monoclonal antibodies against B. burgdorferi and B. hermsii, a cause of relapsing fever, was further characterized. H6831, an antibody recognizing the OspB proteins of some B. burgdorferi strains, and H4825, an antibody specific for one serotype of B. hermsii, were purified, and Fab fragments of the antibodies were prepared. In time-kill studies, more than 99.9% of strain B31 B. burgdorferi cells were killed after 30 min of exposure to H6831 Fab fragments. The MBC of the Fab fragments was 10 micrograms/ml. Electron microscopy revealed that the bactericidal Fab fragments produced numerous blebs and cell lysis of the borrelias for which they were specific. To identify the epitope for H6831, the OspB sequences of H6831-susceptible and -resistant strains and mutants were determined. The deduced OspB proteins of all H6831-resistant strains and mutants differed from the strain B31 OspB at residue 253. Murine antisera raised against a 21-mer synthetic peptide representing the region around residue 253 were specific for strain B31 by Western blot (immunoblot) and growth inhibition assays. Furthermore, the antipeptide serum inhibited the binding of H6831 to whole borrelias. These findings indicated that the linear component of the bactericidal antibody's epitope was located at or near residue 253.

  • Swedish obese subjects (SOS). Recruitment for an intervention study and a selected description of the obese state
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Obesity. ; 19, s. 465-479
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Department of Medicine, Sahlgren's Hospital, University of Göteborg, Sweden. SOS (Swedish obese subjects) is an on-going intervention trial designed to determine whether the mortality and morbidity rates among obese individuals who lose weight by surgical means (gastric banding, vertical banded gastroplasty and gastric by-pass) differ from the rates associated with conventional treatment. For this purpose, the study is recruiting a sample of obese men and women who constitute a registry of potential subjects from which the participants are drawn. Eligibility criteria for participation in the registry were: age at application 37-57 years and BMI greater than or equal to 34 kg/m2 for men and greater than or equal to 38 kg/m2 for women. Before receiving a health examination, all patients complete extensive questionnaires on current and past health status, utilization of medical care and medications, socio-economic status, psychological profiles, dietary habits, physical activity, weight history, and familial disposition to obesity. Each surgical case is matched to its optimal control in the registry, to ensure that the two groups do not differ systematically with respect to any of 18 matching variables that may affect prognosis. The first 1006 subjects included in the registry have been studied with respect to morbidity and compared with on-going population studies of men and women in Göteborg, Sweden. The relative risks of prevalent disease and symptoms associated with obesity in 50-year-old males and females respectively were 4.3 and 4.7 (dyspnoea), 14.7 and 11.8 (angina), 6.3 (myocardial infarction, males only), 2.1 and 4.5 (hypertension), 5.2 and 6.6 (diabetes), 4.6 and 26.1 (claudication) and 1.7 and 1.8 (gall bladder disease). Correspondingly, obese males and females display elevations of systolic and diastolic blood pressure, fasting glucose, insulin, triglyceride, and uric acid levels. However, total cholesterol was not increased in obese males and was in fact significantly lower in obese compared with reference women. HDL-cholesterol was lower in obese than reference men (data were not available in reference women). The rate of taking sick pensions was over twice as high in SOS obese patients than in population controls. Finally, comparison of measurements with self-reported prevalence estimates revealed a considerable amount of previously undiagnosed hypertension and diabetes in the obese subjects. These data suggest that the excess health risks associated with obesity may not be fully appreciated. PMID: 1322873 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]
