  • Nucleon-induced reactions at intermediate energies : New data at 96 MeV and theoretical status
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813 .- 1089-490X. ; 70:1, s. 014607-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Double-differential cross sections for light charged particle production (up to A=4) were measured in 96 MeV neutron-induced reactions, at the TSL Laboratory Cyclotron in Uppsala (Sweden). Measurements for three targets, Fe, Pb, and U, were performed using two independent devices, SCANDAL and MEDLEY. The data were recorded with low-energy thresholds and for a wide angular range (20°–160°). The normalization procedure used to extract the cross sections is based on the np elastic scattering reaction that we measured and for which we present experimental results. A good control of the systematic uncertainties affecting the results is achieved. Calculations using the exciton model are reported. Two different theoretical approaches proposed to improve its predictive power regarding the complex particle emission are tested. The capabilities of each approach is illustrated by comparison with the 96 MeV data that we measured, and with other experimental results available in the literature.

  • Exploring the use of soft X-ray microscopy for imaging subcellular structures of the inner ear
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Microscopy. - : Wiley. - 0022-2720 .- 1365-2818. ; 215, s. 203-212
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The soft X-ray microscope at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory was developed for visualization of biological tissue. Soft X-ray microscopy provides high-resolution visualization of hydrated, non-embedded and non-sectioned cells and is thus potentially an alternative to transmission electron microscopy. Here we show for the first time soft X-ray micrographs of structures isolated from the guinea-pig inner ear. Sensory outer hair cells and supporting pillar cells are readily visualized. In the hair cells, individual stereocilia can easily be identified within the apical hair bundle. The underlying cuticular plate is, however, too densely composed or too thick to be clearly visualized, and thus appears very dark. The cytoplasmic structures protruding from the cuticular plates as well as the fibrillar material surrounding and projecting from the cell nuclei can be seen. In the pillar cells the images reveal individual microtubule bundles. Soft X-ray images of the acellular tectorial membrane and thin two-layered Reissner's membrane display a level of resolution comparable to low-power electron microscopy.

  • 2004
  • Ingår i: 2004 4th IEEE Conference on Nanotechnology. - 0780385365 ; , s. 199-200

    • In this paper, we present a status report on how implementation of nanoimprint lithography has advanced our research. Contact guidance nerve growth experiments have so far primarily been done on micrometer-structured surfaces. We have made a stamp with 17 areas of different, submicron, line width and spacing covering a total 2.6 mm

  • Methane emissions from a constructed wetland treating wastewater : Seasonal and spatial distribution and dependence on edaphic factors
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Water Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 0043-1354 .- 1879-2448. ; 38:18, s. 3960-3970
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment have many advantages. They can be used for several purposes, for example, to reduce levels of organic matter and nutrients, and to retain toxic metals. However, most wetlands are inherently net sources of gaseous compounds like methane and nitrous oxide, which are of environmental concern due to their rapid current accumulation in the atmosphere and their potent global warming capacity. In order to determine the flux of methane from a constructed wetland a study was conducted over two growth seasons on a pilot scale wetland constructed to reduce nutrient levels in secondary treated wastewater. The emissions for the spring to autumn period averaged 141 mg CH4 m-2 d-1 (S.D.=187), ranging from consumption of 375 mg CH4 m-2 d-1 to emissions of 1739 mg CH4 m-2 d-1. The spatial and temporal variations were large, but could be accounted for by measured environmental factors. Among these factors, sediment and water temperatures were significant in all cases and independent of the scale of analysis (r2 up to 0.88).

  • An experimental study of in-furnace processes and dynamic behaviour of a 235 MWe CFB boiler
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: VGB PowerTech. - 1435-3199. ; 84:3, s. 82-87
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a project funded by the 5th Framework Programme of the European Union, a 235 MWe Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) boiler is investigated with respect to in-furnace processes and dynamic response to load changes. The purpose of the project is to assess the insufficiently known features of large-scale CFB boilers. The furnace of the boiler has a cross-section of 21 x 10 meters and a height of 44 meters. The boiler is located in Turow, Poland, and is operated on a local brown coal. The project is unique in that several measurement ports were opened in the walls of the large CFB furnace for measurements in various locations inside the furnace. Also, a number of techniques were employed with new probes developed for this type of measurements to form a basis for studies of hydrodynamic processes as well as local variations in gas components (such as O2, CO, THC) and solid bed materials. The paper describes the measurement techniques and provides examples of results obtained from the in-situ measurements and from the dynamic response study.
