  • Macroscopic Layers of Chiral Plasmonic Nanoparticle Oligomers from Colloidal Lithography
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: ACS Photonics. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 2330-4022. ; 1:10, s. 1074-1081
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optical near-field coupling between closely spaced plasmonic metal nanoparticles is important to a range of nanophotonic applications of high contemporary interest, including surface-enhanced molecular spectroscopy, nanooptical sensing, and various novel light-harvesting concepts. Here we report on monolayers of chiral heterotrimers and heterotetramers composed of closely spaced silver and/or gold nanodisks of different heights fabricated through facile hole-mask colloidal lithography. These quasi-three-dimensional oligomers are interesting for applications because they exhibit "hot" gaps and crevices of nanometric dimensions, a pronounced circular dichroism, and optical chirality in the visible to near-infrared wavelength range, and they can be produced in large ensembles (>109) of identical orientation. We analyze the optical properties of the samples based on simulation results and find that the circular dichroism is due to strong near-field coupling and intricate phase retardation effects originating in the three-dimensional character of the individual oligomers.

    • Renewable sourced PET, PA, PE, starch blends, etc, are fastly growing due to the processability and final performance, that is similar to their petroleum derived options. A bit in the shadow of the development of these plastics, development is ongoing on another group of plastics, made directly of the side-streams of agricultural products: oil plant residues and proteins. They can be used in edible applications but not all of them are suitable for food or forage. Industrial oilseed meal from crambe abyssinica contains relatively high levels of protein that is not suitable for human or animal consumption due to the presence of anti-nutritional compounds. This paper presents research on crambe meal as a base for new plastics, developed to extrude continuous, flexible plastic films based on crambe meal, blended with vital wheat gluten as an elastic component and urea as a protein denaturant. The effect of process parameters, such as screw speed, die temperature and pressure, and the effect of components were studied with regards to the final performance of the film extrudates. E.g. mechanical properties, oxygen permeability and moisture content were determined and surface and cross-section morphologies were examined with electron microscopy. The results showed that crambe-based blends can be extruded as continuous, flexible plastic films, which exhibit barrier properties towards oxygen. Recipes and methods for pelletizing of master batches for post-converting (e.g. extrusion or compression molding) were successfully developed. Addition of a renewable plasticizer improved the extrusion performance and resulted in less hygroscopic films, which further showed the overall highest tensile strength while the extensibility was nearly unaffected. The results provide a first basis to further develop the process and the blend towards potential industrial applications, for example as packaging materials to trays, pots and similar type of packages.

  • Structural architecture and solubility of native and modified gliadin and glutenin proteins : non-crystalline molecular and atomic organization
  • 2014

    • Wheat gluten (WG) and its components, gliadin and glutenin proteins, form the largest polymers in nature, which complicates the structural architecture of these proteins. Wheat gluten, gliadin and glutenin proteins in unmodified form showed few secondary structural features. Structural modification of these proteins using heat, pressure and the chemical chaperone glycerol resulted in a shift to organized structure. In modified gliadin, nano-structural molecular arrangements in the form of hexagonal closed packed (HCP) assemblies with lattice parameter of (58 angstrom) were obvious together with development of intermolecular disulphide bonds. Modification of glutenin resulted in highly polymerized structure with proteins linked not only by disulphide bonds, but also with other covalent and irreversible bonds, as well as the highest proportion of beta-sheets. From a combination of experimental evidence and protein algorithms, we have proposed tertiary structure models of unmodified and modified gliadin and glutenin proteins. An increased understanding of gliadin and glutenin proteins structure and behavior are of utmost importance to understand the applicability of these proteins for various applications including plastic materials, foams, adhesives, films and coatings.

  • Using the human body as an interactive interface for navigation in VR models
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: CAADRIA 2012, Beyond Codes & Pixels, Chennai, India. - 9789881902634 ; 17, s. 79-88

    • The use of Virtual Reality (VR) and interactive real-timerendering in urban planning and building design are becoming moreand more common. However, the integration of VR in the urbanplanning process suffers from the complicated interaction handling ofthe virtual environment. In particular, people unfamiliar to gamingenvironments and computers are less prone to interact with a VRvisualization using keyboard and mouse as controlling devices. Thispaper addresses this issue by presenting an implementation of theXBOX 360 Kinect sensor system, which uses the human body tointeract with the virtual environment. This type of interaction interfaceenables a more natural and user-friendly way of interacting with thevirtual environment. The validation of the system shows thatrespondents perceived the interface as non-demanding and easy to use.The implemented interface to switch between different architectureproposals gave a better understanding and spatial reasoning for therespondent. The study also shows that males perceived the system asmore demanding than females. The users also associated andcompared their body with virtual environment, which could indicatethat they used their body during spatial reasoning. This type of spatialreasoning has been agued to enhance the spatial-perception.

  • Virtuell produktionsplanering med BIM och visualisering
  • 2014

  • How agreement and disagreement evolve over random dynamic networks
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications. - 0733-8716 .- 1558-0008. ; 31:6, s. 1061-1071
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The dynamics of an agreement protocol interacting with a disagreement process over a common random network is considered. The model can represent the spreading of true and false information over a communication network, the propagation of faults in a large-scale control system, or the development of trust and mistrust in a society. At each time instance and with a given probability, a pair of network nodes interact. At random each of the nodes then updates its state towards the state of the other node (attraction), away from the other node (repulsion), or sticks to its current state (neglect). Agreement convergence and disagreement divergence results are obtained for various strengths of the updates for both symmetric and asymmetric update rules. Impossibility theorems show that a specific level of attraction is required for almost sure asymptotic agreement and a specific level of repulsion is required for almost sure asymptotic disagreement. A series of sufficient and/or necessary conditions are then established for agreement convergence or disagreement divergence. In particular, under symmetric updates, a critical convergence measure in the attraction and repulsion update strength is found, in the sense that the asymptotic property of the network state evolution transits from agreement convergence to disagreement divergence when this measure goes from negative to positive. The result can be interpreted as a tight bound on how much bad action needs to be injected in a dynamic network in order to consistently steer its overall behavior away from consensus.

  • Randomized consensus with attractive and repulsive links
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 2013 IEEE 52nd Annual Conference on Decision and Control (CDC). - : IEEE conference proceedings. - 9781467357142 ; , s. 2599-2604
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study convergence properties of a randomized consensus algorithm over a graph with both attractive and repulsive links. At each time instant, a node is randomly selected to interact with a random neighbor. Depending on if the link between the two nodes belongs to a given subgraph of attractive or repulsive links, the node update follows a standard attractive weighted average or a repulsive weighted average, respectively. The repulsive update has the opposite sign of the standard consensus update. In this way, it counteracts the consensus formation and can be seen as a model of link faults or malicious attacks in a communication network, or the impact of trust and antagonism in a social network. Various probabilistic convergence and divergence conditions are established. A threshold condition for the strength of the repulsive action is given for convergence in expectation: when the repulsive weight crosses this threshold value, the algorithm transits from convergence to divergence. An explicit value of the threshold is derived for classes of attractive and repulsive graphs. The results show that a single repulsive link can sometimes drastically change the behavior of the consensus algorithm. They also explicitly show how the robustness of the consensus algorithm depends on the size and other properties of the graphs.

  • Randomized Gossiping with Unreliable Communication : Dependent or Independent Node Updates
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: 2012 IEEE 51st Annual Conference on Decision and Control (CDC). - : IEEE conference proceedings. - 9781467320641 ; , s. 4846-4851
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper studies an asynchronous randomized gossip algorithm under unreliable communication. At each instance, two nodes are selected to meet with a given probability. When nodes meet, two unreliable communication links are established with communication in each direction succeeding with a time-varying probability. It is shown that two particularly interesting cases arise when these communication processes are either perfectly dependent or independent. Necessary and sufficient conditions on the success probability sequence are proposed to ensure almost sure consensus or ?-consensus. Weak connectivity is required when the communication is perfectly dependent, while double connectivity is required when the communication is independent. Moreover, it is proven that with odd number of nodes, average preserving turns from almost forever (with probability one for all initial conditions) for perfectly dependent communication, to almost never (with probability zero for almost all initial conditions) for the independent case. This average preserving property does not hold true for general number of nodes. These results indicate the fundamental role the node interactions have in randomized gossip algorithms.
