  • Inspection frequency optimization model for degrading flowlines on an offshore platform
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Reliability, Quality and Safety Engineering (IJRQSE). - 0218-5393. ; 15:2, s. 167-180
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many offshore oil and gas installations in the North Sea are approaching the end of their designed lifetimes. Technological improvements and higher oil prices have developed favorable conditions for more oil recovery from these existing installations. However, in most cases, an extended oil production period does not justify investment in new installations. Therefore cost-effective maintenance of the existing platform infrastructure is becoming very important. In this paper, an inspection frequency optimization model has been developed which can be used effectively by the inspection and maintenance personnel in the industry to estimate the number of inspections/optimum preventive maintenance time required for a degrading component at any age or interval in its lifecycle at a minimum total maintenance cost. The model can help in planning inspections and maintenance intervals for different components of the platform infrastructure. The model has been validated by a case study performed on flowlines installed on the top side of an offshore oil and gas platform in the North Sea. Reliability analysis has been carried out to arrive at the best inspection frequency for the flowline segments under study

  • Association of HLA-DRB1, interleukin-6 and cyclin D1 polymorphisms with cervical cancer in the Swedish population-A candidate gene approach.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Cancer. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0020-7136 .- 1097-0215. ; 125:8, s. 1851-1858
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV) infection is the major risk factor for cervical cancer (CxCa). The role of genetic susceptibility in the disease has been suggested, but the existing data lack consistency. We conducted a nested case-control study on 973 CxCa cases and 1,763 matched controls, from two Swedish population-based cohorts to examine the association of common genetic variants with CxCa risk. Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) alleles and 24 other polymorphisms in 14 genes were selected on the basis of reported association or mechanistic plausibility with an HPV infection or cervical cancer development. Genotyping was conducted using multiplex PCR and Luminex technology. A significant association of CxCa with various polymorphisms was observed: rs1800797 in the IL-6 gene (odds ratio [OR] = 0.88, 95% confidence intervals [CI]: 0.79-0.99); rs1041981 in the LTA gene (OR = 0.87, 95% CI: 0.78-0.98), and rs9344 in the CCND1 gene (OR = 1.14, 95% CI: 1.02-1.27), for those individuals carrying the rare allele. Additionally, the alleles 0401 and 1501 of the HLA class II DRB1 locus were associated with an increased risk (OR = 1.23, 95% CI: 1.04-1.45 and OR = 1.29, 95% CI: 1.11-1.50, respectively), and allele 1301 was associated with decreased risk (OR = 0.59, 95% CI: 0.47-0.73). The effects of CCND1 and the HLA*DRB1 alleles were independent of the effect of smoking. We did not find any association of risk with polymorphisms in genes related to the innate immune system. In conclusion, our study provides evidence for genetic susceptibility to CxCa due to variations in genes involved in the immune system and in cell cycle. (c) 2009 UICC.

  • Optimal maintenance decision for line reparable units (LRU’s) for an aircraft system — A conceptual approach
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Quarterly Journal of the Operational Research Society of India (OPSEARCH). - 0030-3887 .- 0975-0320. ; 45:3, s. 291-302
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Maintenance decisions concerning repair of the Line Replaceable Unit (LRU) of an aircraft fleet need to be considered carefully while deciding the phasing out of the fleet. This is important for achieving higher degree of cost effectiveness and fleet availability at desired level. Discard rate and phasing out period for an aircraft fleet are the critical parameters for determining optimum time to stop the maintenance of LRU. The economic value of remaining useful life of an aircraft fleet should be taken into consideration by salvaging the LRU at the end of the phasing out. The paper suggests a methodology to arrive the time that will minimize the total life cycle cost and provide us economic basis to withdraw the maintenance resources. A mathematical model has been developed for the discard rate of aircrafts based on failure rate, mission life and remaining useful life of the aircrafts in the fleet. This will assist in fulfilling the managing demand of LRU while phasing out of the aircraft fleet.

  • In situ synthesis of Pt nanoparticles in SBA-15 by encapsulating in modified template micelles : size restricted growth within the mesochannels
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Chemistry. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 0959-9428 .- 1364-5501. ; 18:15, s. 1765-1770
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A truly in situ and simple method is developed for nanoparticle incorporation within the mesochannels of SBA-15 involving dispersion of metal precursors in surfactant-modified polymer micelles. The diffusion of the precursor within the micellar structure is aided by interaction with the cationic head group of the surfactant leading to a unique method to facilitate the formation of highly disperse, uniform nanoparticles molded by the walls of the mesochannels. The nanoparticle incorporated mesoporous material has a highly enhanced surface area and adsorption capabilities in comparison to its parent materials without any pore blockage which makes this method ideal for the preparation of nanocatalysts.

  • Genome-wide association study identifies five susceptibility loci for glioma.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Nature Genetics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1061-4036 .- 1546-1718. ; 41:8, s. 899-904
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To identify risk variants for glioma, we conducted a meta-analysis of two genome-wide association studies by genotyping 550K tagging SNPs in a total of 1,878 cases and 3,670 controls, with validation in three additional independent series totaling 2,545 cases and 2,953 controls. We identified five risk loci for glioma at 5p15.33 (rs2736100, TERT; P = 1.50 x 10(-17)), 8q24.21 (rs4295627, CCDC26; P = 2.34 x 10(-18)), 9p21.3 (rs4977756, CDKN2A-CDKN2B; P = 7.24 x 10(-15)), 20q13.33 (rs6010620, RTEL1; P = 2.52 x 10(-12)) and 11q23.3 (rs498872, PHLDB1; P = 1.07 x 10(-8)). These data show that common low-penetrance susceptibility alleles contribute to the risk of developing glioma and provide insight into disease causation of this primary brain tumor.

  • Chemo-enzymatic synthesis of comb polymers
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: European Polymer Journal. - : Elsevier BV. - 0014-3057 .- 1873-1945. ; 43:3, s. 808-817
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper describes the synthesis and characterization of comb polymers by a two-step chemo-enzymatic process. In the first step macromonomers bearing unsaturation at the chain end were prepared by lipase catalyzed ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of E-caprolactone (CL) and 1,5-dioxepane-2-one (DXO). The ROP was carried out in bulk at 60 degrees C under anhydrous conditions using 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) as the initiator. The DP of the macromonomers was controlled by regulating the monomer: HEMA molar feed concentration. The macromonomers were then homo- or co-polymerized in the second step with alkyl methacrylate monomers (methyl methacrylate or HEMA) using AIBN initiated free radical polymerization. Characterization of the polymers was done by H-1 NMR, SEC and DSC techniques.

  • Aliphatic Polyesters for Soft Tissue Engineering : Development from Conventional Organometallic to Novel Enzymatic Catalysis
  • 2007
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The development of macromolecules with defined structure and properties, aimed specifically for biomedical applications, has resulted in diverse biodegradable polymers with advanced architectures. Among them, aliphatic polyesters synthesized by ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of lactones and lactides have a leading position due to their good mechanical properties, hydrolyzability and biocompatibility. To achieve tailored properties and controlled architecture, the technique for ROP of lactones and lactides has been continuously refined in the past years. Enzyme-catalyzed ROP is one of the most promising tools, which avoids the use of toxic organometallic catalysts and brings a “green-chemistry” appeal with it. In the work described in this thesis, enzyme-catalyzed ROP of 1,5-dioxepan-2-one (DXO), ε-caprolactone (CL) and lactides (L-, D- and D,L-lactide) was performed in bulk using Lipases from different sources. The effects of enzyme concentration, polymerization temperature and reaction water content on the monomer conversion and the polymer molecular weight during DXO polymerization were studied, and the role of water as initiator was confirmed. Terminal functionalized, block, comb and star polymers were synthesized using different alcohols as initiator in the enzyme-catalyzed ROP of DXO, CL or lactides under strictly anhydrous conditions. The effect of simultaneous and sequential copolymerization of DXO and CL on the micro-block structure of the copolymers was studied and the reactivity ratios of DXO and CL were determined under Lipase catalysis. High molecular weight copolymers of DXO and CL thus obtained were fabricated into porous scaffolds for tissue implant applications. Enzymatic degradation and alkaline hydrolysis of lactides was performed to study the effect of molecular branches and the stereochemistry of the monomer on the degradation profile. In another approach, cross-linked films of DXO and CL were prepared using 2,2´-bis-(ε-caprolactone-4-yl) propane (BCP) as the cross-linking agent and Sn(Oct)2 as the catalyst. The networks obtained thereof were elastomeric materials, easy to cast and remove from the mould.

  • Genetic variation in the prostate stem cell antigen gene PSCA confers susceptibility to urinary bladder cancer.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Nature genetics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1546-1718 .- 1061-4036. ; 41:9, s. 991-5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We conducted a genome-wide association study on 969 bladder cancer cases and 957 controls from Texas. For fast-track validation, we evaluated 60 SNPs in three additional US populations and validated the top SNP in nine European populations. A missense variant (rs2294008) in the PSCA gene showed consistent association with bladder cancer in US and European populations. Combining all subjects (6,667 cases, 39,590 controls), the overall P-value was 2.14 x 10(-10) and the allelic odds ratio was 1.15 (95% confidence interval 1.10-1.20). rs2294008 alters the start codon and is predicted to cause truncation of nine amino acids from the N-terminal signal sequence of the primary PSCA translation product. In vitro reporter gene assay showed that the variant allele significantly reduced promoter activity. Resequencing of the PSCA genomic region showed that rs2294008 is the only common missense SNP in PSCA. Our data identify rs2294008 as a new bladder cancer susceptibility locus.
