  • Catwalking a Bridge : A Longitudinal Study of a Transnational Megaproject
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Inside Megaprojects : Understanding Cultural Practices in Project Management. - 9788763003445 - 8763003449 ; 30, s. 33-68
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Transnational bridges are a special kind of mega-project with strong symbolic power and a complex set of stakeholders. The long Oresund bridge is a good example of this. It links the cities of Malmoe, Sweden and Copenhagen, Denmark and was opened in 2000. I will use the bridge construction to demonstrate the ways in which a mega-construction project does symbolic and ritual work during the long planning stage, the actual construction years, the grand opening ceremonies as well as in its later life as an everyday transport mechanism. The bridge was built not only by engineers but also by event managers, media consultants and brand builders. It was a project not only of transport logistics but also of urban development and aimed to facilitate political, economic and cultural integration across a national border – the making of a transnational metropolis. The interdisciplinary study of the bridge is a longitudinal one, which makes it possible to explore how changing economic and political climates affect a mega-project and what happens when visions and great expectations are confronted with everyday realities at different stages.

  • Emotional luggage : Unpacking the suitcase
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Sensitive objects.
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • How do you approach an elusive phenomena like “travel fever”, the kind of mixed feelings travellers experience, hovering between anxiety and exhilaration? In an ongoing study of such links between motion and emotion I have worked with different arenas, above all the production of shared or contested moods and atmospheres in transit spaces. Here, I would like to try another approach: the suitcase. It is an object into which emotionalities and materialities are thrown or neatly packed, entangled in interesting ways. The suitcase is not only a container for stuffing objects, but also emotions, dreams, anxieties and ideals. It can be many things: a condensation of the future, an icon of mobility, a last resort, a threatening or comforting object, a defense against a hostile world, a transitional object in Winnicott’s terms. This travel item is explored through a bricolage approach, mixing history, popular culture, field observations, art and fiction. My aim is to discuss the specific kind of throwntogtherness of materialities and emotionalities that a suitcase offers.

  • Everyday Life, Anthropology of
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Encyclopedia of the Social & Behavioral Sciences: Second Edition. - 9780080970875 - 9780080970868 ; , s. 323-326
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study of everyday life is an interdisciplinary field that stands for a special interest in the commonplace and the seemingly trivial routines and activities of daily life as well as a focus on ordinary people as creative actors rather than passive consumers or objects of domination. Like few other similar concepts, the study of everyday life has been used not only as a research perspective or analytical tool but also as a research ideology. The study of everyday life developed in the postwar period as an alternative to, or critique of, mainstream traditions in the social sciences, often with a focus on anthropological, ethnographic, and qualitative approaches.

  • Mess : on domestic overflows
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Consumption Markets and Culture. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1025-3866 .- 1477-223X. ; 20:1, s. 1-6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many homes in affluent Western societies have an ongoing battle against domestic mess, because of the steady inflow of new acquisitions. This essay looks at the ways in which mess has travelled through modern history and has ended up as both a powerful metaphor and a constant everyday worry in consumer life. In this process, mess has often been defined as a problematic condition, often reflecting the moral shortcoming of messy individuals. It has also created new market opportunities, services and solutions for de-cluttering. Mess illustrates some of the tensions in contemporary patterns of consumption and highlights the understudied aspects of how commodities are transformed during their domestic life cycle. The focus is on the ways in which materiality and affect are linked in these processes. The paper draws on an ongoing research project, “Managing Overflow.”

  • Modes and moods of mobility : tourists and commuters
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Culture Unbound. Journal of Current Cultural Research. - : Linkoping University Electronic Press. - 2000-1525. ; 7:2, s. 175-195
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • What can we learn from comparing different modes and moods of travel, among, for example, tourists and commuters? This paper contrasts these two very different kinds of mobility, and the ways in which they organise both motion and emotion. It is not only a question about how people interact with various systems of transport, but also how materialities and affects work together. An important topic is the question of how people acquire travelling skills. How do they learn to be a tourist or a commuter, to handle a train ride, navigate a transit space, or interact with strangers? A good reason to contrast commuters and tourists is also because they have often been studied within very different research paradigms. How can these different research traditions be put into a dialogue with each other, and help to develop methods for capturing the often elusive ways in which motion and emotion work together?

  • Sadržavanje prošlosti, sadašnjosti i budućnosti : Pakiranje kofera
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Narodna Umjetnost. - : Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Research. - 0547-2504 .- 1848-865X. ; 53:1, s. 59-74
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Everyday life is a constant negotiation between experiences and memories of the past, the challenges of the present and longings and anxieties about the future. My paper focuses on “the throwntogetherness” of such temporal frames. How are they synchronized or kept apart? My chosen example is the suitcase, which I will analyze with the help of two perspectives focusing on the acts of throwing together and containing, to explore how the past, the present and the future is organized, intertwined and stored. The mundane tasks of packing and unpacking will be explored in different contemporary and historical settings, among holidaymakers, migrants, commuters and refugees. The suitcase works as both a material and cultural container.
