  • Event Horizon Telescope imaging of the archetypal blazar 3C 279 at an extreme 20 microarcsecond resolution

    • 3C 279 is an archetypal blazar with a prominent radio jet that show broadband flux density variability across the entire electromagnetic spectrum. We use an ultra-high angular resolution technique - global Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) at 1.3mm (230 GHz) - to resolve the innermost jet of 3C 279 in order to study its fine-scale morphology close to the jet base where highly variable-ray emission is thought to originate, according to various models. The source was observed during four days in April 2017 with the Event Horizon Telescope at 230 GHz, including the phased Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, at an angular resolution of ∼20 μas (at a redshift of z = 0:536 this corresponds to ∼0:13 pc ∼ 1700 Schwarzschild radii with a black hole mass MBH = 8 × 108 M⊙). Imaging and model-fitting techniques were applied to the data to parameterize the fine-scale source structure and its variation.We find a multicomponent inner jet morphology with the northernmost component elongated perpendicular to the direction of the jet, as imaged at longer wavelengths. The elongated nuclear structure is consistent on all four observing days and across diffierent imaging methods and model-fitting techniques, and therefore appears robust. Owing to its compactness and brightness, we associate the northern nuclear structure as the VLBI "core". This morphology can be interpreted as either a broad resolved jet base or a spatially bent jet.We also find significant day-to-day variations in the closure phases, which appear most pronounced on the triangles with the longest baselines. Our analysis shows that this variation is related to a systematic change of the source structure. Two inner jet components move non-radially at apparent speeds of ∼15 c and ∼20 c (∼1:3 and ∼1:7 μas day-1, respectively), which more strongly supports the scenario of traveling shocks or instabilities in a bent, possibly rotating jet. The observed apparent speeds are also coincident with the 3C 279 large-scale jet kinematics observed at longer (cm) wavelengths, suggesting no significant jet acceleration between the 1.3mm core and the outer jet. The intrinsic brightness temperature of the jet components are ≤1010 K, a magnitude or more lower than typical values seen at ≥7mm wavelengths. The low brightness temperature and morphological complexity suggest that the core region of 3C 279 becomes optically thin at short (mm) wavelengths.

    • Ce3+ in CeO2, rather than Ce4+, is believed to provide assistance to the breaking up of Si-O bond during chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) of silica. In the paper, lanthanide metals (La, Nd and Yb) doped CeO2 nanoparticles were synthesized by modified incipient impregnation method in order to improve the content of Ce3+ in CeO2 as polishing. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) experiments and density function theory (DFT) calculation demonstrate this approach could achieve surface doping of CeO2 nanoparticles, and facilitates the formation of oxygen vacancy and Ce3+ content. CMP experiments show that the polishing rate and the surface quality of silica wafer are obviously improved by using the doped CeO2 as abrasive particles. Especially for Nd/CeO2, content of Ce3+ increases from 0.146 to 0.235, the polishing rate of silica is accelerated by 29.6% in alkaline slurries, and a better surface quality (Sa = 9.6 angstrom) is obtained.

    • The stability of constituent phases in multi-component system always plays a prominent role in tailoring their mechanical performance at elevated temperatures. In this work, we highlight a chemical ordering feature in the AlTiVCr1-xNbx (0 <= x <= 1) alloys with body-centered cubic crystal structure. The quantum-mechanical first-principle investigations of these alloys on the elemental distribution identify a family of B2 type of partially ordered configurations. We map out the elastic parameters in detail as a function of composition and temperature for disordered and partially ordered phases. A great sensitivity to the order-disorder transformation is revealed, especially for the Cr-rich system. Our results demonstrate that a proper control of the ordering level in these alloys can facilitate the optimal tuning of their mechanical performance while keeping the density almost unchanged. The study presented here further predicts that these alloys possess high specific stiffness, low thermal expansion, and large elastic softening resistance. It is demonstrated that the considered alloys have thermal and mechanical properties that compete with superalloys and other high temperature structural materials.

  • Economic and environmental sustainability of maize-wheat rotation production when substituting mineral fertilizers with manure in the North China Plain

    • Substituting mineral fertilizers with manure has been promoted to enrich soil fertility and maintain field productivity in agricultural production systems. However, there is limited information regarding the effect of substituting mineral-N with manure on eco-efficiency (economic and environmental trade-offs) from a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) perspective. This study investigated the eco-efficiency of maize-wheat rotation production under three fertilization strategies: mineral fertilizer NPK (CK), substituting 50% of mineral-N with solid manure (SM + NK), and substituting 50% of mineral-N with liquid manure (LM + NP) in the North China Plain. The economic profits were evaluated based on the prevailing market prices of inputs, outputs, and services. The potential environmental impacts were assessed by the LCA approach. The eco-efficiency was evaluated as the ratio of economic profit to individual environmental impact categories. The results from the economic analysis and the LCA showed that, compared with CK, the economic profit increased by 17.2% and 19.1%, while the environmental impacts at the endpoint level decreased by 24.6% and 37.9% under SM + NK and LM + NP, respectively. Additionally, the eco-efficiencies under SM + NK and LM + NP at the endpoint level were calculated to be 55.4% and 91.7%, respectively, higher than CK. Overall, the results suggested that substituting 50% of mineral-N with manure, especially liquid manure, had a great potential for sustainable maize-wheat rotation production in the North China Plain.

    • To determine the diffusion and sorption propertiesof radionuclides in intact crystalline rocks, a newelectromigration devicewas built and tested by running with I-and Se(IV) ions. By introducing a potentiostatto impose a constant voltageover the studied rock sample, the electromigration device cangive more stable and accurateexperimental resultsthan those from the traditional electromigration devices.In addition, the variation in the pHofthe background electrolytes wasminimised by adding a small amount of NaHCO3as buffers.To interpret the experimental results with moreconfidence, anadvection-dispersion model was also developed in thisstudy, which accounts for the most important mechanisms governing ionic transport in the electromigration experiments.Data analysis of the breakthrough curves by the advection-dispersion model, instead of the traditional ideal plug-flowmodel,suggest that the effective diffusivitiesof I-and Se(IV)are (1.15±0.06) ×10-13m2/s and (3.50±0.86) ×10-14m2/s, respectively. The results also show thatI-is more mobile than Se(IV) ions when migrating through the sameintact rock sampleand that theirsorption properties are almost identical.

  • Development and application of an advection-dispersion model for data analysis of electromigration experiments with intact rock cores

    • An advection-dispersion model was developed for interpreting the experimental results of electromigration in granitic rock cores. The most important mechanisms governing the movement of the tracer ions, i.e. electromigration, electroosmosis and dispersion were taken into account by the advection-dispersion model, but the influence of aqueous chemistry was ignored. An analytical solution in the Laplace domain was derived and then applied to analyze the measured results of a series of experiments, performed in an updated experimental device using different applied voltages. The modelling results suggested that both studied tracers, i.e. iodide and selenite, are effectively non-sorbing in the intact rock investigated. The effective diffusivities and formation factors evaluated from the model were also found to be in good agreement with data reported in literature and the associated uncertainties are much smaller than those obtained from the classical ideal plug-flow model, which accounts only for the dominant effect of electromigration on ionic transport. To explore further how the quality of parameter identifications would be influenced by neglect of aqueous chemistry, a reactive transport model was also implemented, which may be regarded as a multi-component version of the advection-dispersion model. The analysis showed that the advection-dispersion model works equally well as the reactive transport model but requires much less computational demand. It can, therefore, be used with great confidence to interpret the experimental results of electromigration for studies of diffusion and sorption behavior of radionuclides in intact rock cores.

    • A dual-mode hyperspectral imager using field of view scanning needs no moving macro parts. It could work in dual-mode (macro imaging and micro imaging) and is equipped with a conjugated camera for quick object-selection and focusing. By adjusting the imaging lens and achieving the image clarity on the conjugated camera, we could find the correct location and focusing of the ROIs simultaneously instead of inefficiently checking the hyperspectral image after the whole scanning process. The whole system was applied to the study of spectral characteristics of blood oxygen in human hands and the microscopic identification of algae, showing a great potential of clinical and marine applications of our system.
