  • The case for strategic international alliances to harness nutritional genomics for public and personal health
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: The British journal of nutrition. - : Cambridge University Press (CUP). - 0007-1145 .- 1475-2662. ; 94:5, s. 623-632
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nutrigenomics is the study of how constituents of the diet interact with genes, and their products, to alter phenotype and, conversely, how genes and their products metabolise these constituents into nutrients, antinutrients, and bioactive compounds. Results from molecular and genetic epidemiological studies indicate that dietary unbalance can alter gene–nutrient interactions in ways that increase the risk of developing chronic disease. The interplay of human genetic variation and environmental factors will make identifying causative genes and nutrients a formidable, but not intractable, challenge. We provide specific recommendations for how to best meet this challenge and discuss the need for new methodologies and the use of comprehensive analyses of nutrient–genotype interactions involving large and diverse populations. The objective of the present paper is to stimulate discourse and collaboration among nutrigenomic researchers and stakeholders, a process that will lead to an increase in global health and wellness by reducing health disparities in developed and developing countries.

  • Signatures of bandlike tunneling in granular nanowires
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 72:11, s. 113411-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We explore the problem of tunneling through disorderd nanowires, comprised of a random distribution of metallic grains, by means of a many-body model that captures the essential physics of the system. The random configuration of grains gives rise to a smooth bandlike set of states that mediates current flow through the nanowires. Analytical and numerical calculations show the characteristic signature of this unusual bandlike transport to be a quadratic variation of the current as a function of the applied voltage (i.e., I similar to V-2), a variation that is clearly observed in experimental studies of Pt/C composite nanowires.

  • High-pressure studies of Nano/sub-micrometer C70 rods
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: High Energy Physics and Nuclear Physics B. - 0254-3052. ; 29:Supplement, s. 112-115
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have successfully synthesized C-70 rods in nano/sub-micrometers scale by evaporating solvent method. The diameter of the as grown C-70 rods is similar to 500 nm, and the length is similar to 10 mu m. The EDXD pattern and Raman spectroscopy for as -grown sample indicate that the as grown C-70 rod is in hcp structure. The pressure-induced structural phase transition has been studied by using DAC combined with EDXD and Raman spectroscopy methods under quasi-hydrostatic pressure up to 26.1GPa. It is found that hcp structure transforms into amorphous phase for C-70 rods in the pressure range from 23.3 to 26.1GPa, which is higher than the transformation pressure for bulk C-70 crystals. The phase transition is irreversible and it is induced by the collapse of C-70 cage.

  • Origin of the prolactin-releasing hormone (PRLH) receptors : Evidence of coevolution between PRLH and a redundant neuropeptide Y receptor during vertebrate evolution
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Genomics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0888-7543 .- 1089-8646. ; 85:6, s. 688-703
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present seven new vertebrate homologs of the prolactin-releasing hormone receptor (PRLHR) and show that these are found as two separate subtypes, PRLHR1 and PRLHR2. Analysis of a number of vertebrate sequences using phylogeny, pharmacology, and paralogon analysis indicates that the PRLHRs are likely to share a common ancestry with the neuropeptide Y (NPY) receptors. Moreover, a micromolar level of NPY was able to bind and inhibit completely the PRLH-evoked response in PRLHR1-expressing cells. We suggest that an ancestral PRLH peptide started coevolving with a redundant NPY binding receptor, which then became PRLHR, approximately 500 million years ago. The PRLHR1 subtype was shown to have a relatively high evolutionary rate compared to receptors with fixed peptide preference, which could indicate a drastic change in binding preference, thus supporting this hypothesis. This report suggests how gene duplication events can lead to novel peptide ligand/receptor interactions and hence spur the evolution of new physiological functions.
