  • Apolipoprotein B/A-I ratio related to visceral but not to subcutaneous adipose tissue in elderly Swedes
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Atherosclerosis. - : Elsevier BV. - 0021-9150 .- 1879-1484. ; 211:2, s. 656-659
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the amount of visceral (VAT) or subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) independently of the other can determine the apolipoprotein (apo)B/A-I ratio. METHODS: VAT and SAT areas were assessed using magnetic resonance imaging in 247 randomly selected 70-year-old men and women who did not use lipid-lowering drugs. Their adipose tissue areas were compared to their apoB and apo A-I levels and to their apoB/A-I ratios. RESULTS: The VAT area and the gender were significantly related to the apoB/A-I ratio whereas the SAT area was not. There was a positive relationship between the VAT area and the apoB/A-I ratio. CONCLUSION: A positive relationship was established between the amount of VAT and the apoB/A-I ratio, whereas there was no relationship between the amount of SAT and the apoB/A-I ratio. This observation supports the notion that VAT is metabolically active.

  • Plasma parathyroid hormone and risk of congestive heart failure in the community
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Heart Failure. - : Wiley. - 1388-9842 .- 1879-0844. ; 12:11, s. 1186-1192
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In experimental studies parathyroid hormone (PTH) has been associated with underlying causes of heart failure (HF) such as atherosclerosis, left ventricular hypertrophy, and myocardial fibrosis. Individuals with increased levels of PTH, such as primary or secondary hyperparathyroidism patients, have increased risk of ischaemic heart disease and HF. Moreover, increasing PTH is associated with worse prognosis in patients with overt HF. However, the association between PTH and the development HF in the community has not been reported. In a prospective, community-based study of 864 elderly men without HF or valvular disease at baseline (mean age 71 years, the ULSAM study) the association between plasma (P)-PTH and HF hospitalization was investigated adjusted for established HF risk factors (myocardial infarction, hypertension, diabetes, electrocardiographic left ventricular hypertrophy, smoking, and hypercholesterolaemia) and variables reflecting mineral metabolism (S-calcium, S-phosphate, P-vitamin D, S-albumin, dietary calcium and vitamin D intake, physical activity, glomerular filtration rate, and blood draw season). During follow-up (median 8 years), 75 individuals were hospitalized due to HF. In multivariable Cox-regression analyses, higher P-PTH was associated with increased HF hospitalization (hazard ratio for 1-SD increase of PTH, 1.41, 95% CI 1.12-1.77, P = 0.003). Parathyroid hormone also predicted hospitalization in participants without apparent ischaemic HF and in participants with normal P-PTH. In a large community-based sample of elderly men, PTH predicted HF hospitalizations, also after accounting for established risk factors and mineral metabolism variables. Our data suggest a role for PTH in the development of HF even in the absence of overt hyperparathyroidism.

  • Longitudinal evidence for diminished frontal-cortex function in aging
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. - : Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. - 0027-8424 .- 1091-6490. ; 107:52, s. 22682-22686
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cross-sectional estimates of age-related changes in brain structure and function were compared with 6-y longitudinal estimates. The results indicated increased sensitivity of the longitudinal approach as well as qualitative differences. Critically, the cross-sectional analyses were suggestive of age-related frontal overrecruitment, whereas the longitudinal analyses revealed frontal underrecruitment with advancing age. The cross-sectional observation of overrecruitment reflected a select elderly sample. However, when followed over time, this sample showed reduced frontal recruitment. These findings dispute inferences of true age changes on the basis of age differences, hence challenging some contemporary models of neurocognitive aging, and demonstrate age-related decline in frontal brain volume as well as functional response.

  • Admittance Matching of 60 GHz Rectangular Dielectric Resonator Antennas for Integrated Impulse Radio
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: [Host publication title missing]. ; , s. 253-256
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Methods to achieve admittance matching of rectangular dielectric resonator antennas intended for 60~GHz impulse radio are reported. The motivation is to find a suitable antenna that may be integrated in the V-band gated tunnel diode wavelet generator, replacing its tank circuit and forming a low complexity transmitter. Probed one- and two-port scattering parameter measurements have been performed to characterise the fabricated antennas. Changing the feed structure from a tapered dipole to an offset fed and tapered slot, a change from capacitive to inductive characteristics is observed, and the matching to the gated tunnel diode is improved. Deembedded admittance resonance frequencies of fabricated antennas were found at 53.6 and 52.2~GHz for dipole and slot fed antennas, respectively. Characterising the transmission link between dipole fed antennas, a maximum antenna gain of 10.5~dBi and a 3~dB power bandwidth of 1.5~GHz were found at 53.3~GHz.

  • III-V Nanowires-Extending a Narrowing Road
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the IEEE. - 0018-9219. ; 98:12, s. 2047-2060
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Semiconductor nanowires have attracted considerable attention during the last decade and are considered as an alternative path to extend the road for scaled semiconductor devices. The interest is motivated by the improved electrostatic control in the cylindrical geometry and the possibility to utilize heterostructures in transistor design. Currently, nanowire transistors have been realized both in III-Vs and in group IV materials employing top-down as well as bottom-up technologies. In this review, we give an overview of the field and, in particular, we summarize state-of-the-art for III-V nanowire devices. It is demonstrated that the growth and processing technologies are maturing and that devices with good transistor characteristics are being fabricated by a combined bottom-up and top-down approach. Also, the first radio-frequency (RF)-implementations are reviewed and discussed.
