Skeletal Muscle Transcriptomic Comparison between Long-Term Trained and Untrained Men and Women

- To better understand the health benefits of lifelong exercise in humans, we conduct global skeletal muscle transcriptomic analyses of long-term endurance- (9 men, 9 women) and strength-trained (7 men) humans compared with age-matched untrained controls (7 men, 8 women). Transcriptomic analysis, Gene Ontology, and genome-scale metabolic modeling demonstrate changes in pathways related to the prevention of metabolic diseases, particularly with endurance training. Our data also show prominent sex differences between controls and that these differences are reduced with endurance training. Additionally, we compare our data with studies examining muscle gene expression before and after a months-long training period in individuals with metabolic diseases, This analysis reveals that training shifts gene expression in individuals with impaired metabolism to become more similar to our endurance-trained group. Overall, our data provide an extensive examination of the accumulated transcriptional changes that occur with decades-long training and identify important "exercise-responsive" genes that could attenuate metabolic disease.

- Ulf Israelsson, mångårig studierektor, medarbetare och juridiska institutionens primus motor, vet vad som krävs för att bli en bra jurist. Ulf har, bland mycket annat, bidragit till juristutbildningens kvalitetsarbete genom att utföra enkäter med studenter som tagit examen. I enkäten som genomfördes 2018 kommenterade en tidigare student att "[d]et var 4,5 fantastiska år där jag lärde mig otroligt mycket". Det är naturligtvis tillfredställande för alla oss som undervisar på juristprogrammet när en student är nöjd med sin utbildning, men det viktiga är den senare delen av citatet. Att bli jurist kräver mycket arbete. Nio terminers hårt arbete kommer också att förändra de som börjar programmet. Vissa går så långt som att hävda att många juriststudenter upplever en intellektuell pånyttfödelse under första året på utbildningen. Det är inte möjligt att i detta sammanhang beskriva alla de utmaningar som studenter på juristprogrammet kommer att möta, men vi har identifierat tre centrala aspekter som alla juriststudenter måste förhålla sig till. Studenterna måste för det första lära sig att prata som en jurist, för det andra att arbeta som en jurist och för det tredje att hantera andra juriststudenter. Det kommer inte att vara enkelt, men vi lovar att det är värt det.

- I turbulenta tider, då grundläggande rättigheter och begränsningar för maktutövning utmanas, ökar betydelsen av de gränser som den konstitutionella rätten ställer upp för utövandet av offentlig makt. Samtidigt blir det konstitutionellrättsliga läget allt mer komplext, inte minst på grund av europarättens inflytande.Konstitutionell rätt behandlar den konstitutionella rättens tre centrala teman: maktdelning och andra förutsättningar för utövande av offentlig makt, skyddet för grundläggande rättigheter samt rättsligt genomdrivande av konstitutionellrättsliga normer. Utifrån dessa tre teman behandlar författarna konstitutionella bestämmelser med ursprung i svensk nationell rätt, EU-rätten och Europakonventionen om mänskliga rättigheter.Boken är anpassad för att kunna användas som lärobok på juristutbildningen, men riktar sig också till en bredare publik. Konstitutionell rätt är relevant läsning för såväl erfarna jurister som läsare som är intresserade av konstitutionella frågor mer allmänt. Denna andra upplaga är påtagligt omarbetad och utvidgad.

With Gods as Neighbours : Extra-temenal activity at Greek rural sanctuaries, 700–200 BCE

- The thesis investigates so-called extra-temenal areas at Greek rural sanctuaries 700–200 BCE. Extra-temenal areas are defined as areas located outside the temenos, which have a functional, administrative and conceptual connection to the sanctuary. The aim is to better understand the use, administration and significance of the areas and activities close to, but outside of the temenos. To facilitate this investigation a field survey project at Labraunda was devised, the Surroundings of Labraunda project, and to complement and contrast the results of this survey, all published material from the sanctuaries of Sinuri in Karia, and Nemea in Korinthia, was examined. Activities could be attested in the surroundings of all three sanctuaries, ranging from everyday household tasks such as cooking and weaving, to building activity, ceramic production, sports, and cult. Most of these activities were spatially concentrated within 500 metres of the temenos, possibly with an internal spatial organisation in which certain parts of the area were dedicated to permanent living, and others to temporary activities during the religious festivals. The activities noted appear to be focussed towards the sanctuary, i.e. they can be expected to have existed by and for the sanctuary’s needs. It can be suggested that there existed a zone around the temenos, perceived as belonging to the sanctuary, and where activities connected to the sanctuary were practised. To conceptualise the activities noted in the surroundings of rural sanctuaries, and the relationship between the extra-temenal and the temenos, the concept of commons was applied in an attempt to understand how the sanctuary could have functioned. Many parallels between ancient Greek rural sanctuaries and commons can be noted, and the sanctuaries are suggested to have functioned as ‘religious commons’, that is, places of shared interest and responsibility for the communities using them, and likewise places of social interaction and construction of identity. The commons perspective can help explain why an all-encompassing function of this type of sanctuary has been difficult to establish, as it emphasises variation rather than uniformity. Religious commons can be expected to have adapted to local conditions, leading to varying expressions of the same basic formula. The commons perspective can also help explain the resilience of rural sanctuaries, and why they had such an important role in the creation and perpetuation of identity in the ancient Greek society.

Plant-based diets, insulin sensitivity and inflammation in elderly men with chronic kidney disease.

- BACKGROUND: In persons with CKD, adherence to plant-based diets is associated with lower risk of CKD progression and death, but underlying mechanisms are poorly characterized. We here explore associations between adherence to plant-based diets and measures of insulin sensitivity and inflammation in men with CKD stages 3-5.METHODS: Cross-sectional study including 418 men free from diabetes, aged 70-71 years and with cystatin-C estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) <60 mL/min/1.73m2 and not receiving kidney-specific dietetic advice. Information from 7-day food records was used to evaluate the adherence to a plant-based diet index (PBDi), which scores positively the intake of plant-foods and negatively animal-foods. Insulin sensitivity and glucose disposal rate were assessed with the gold-standard hyperinsulinemic euglycemic glucose clamp technique. Inflammation was evaluated by serum concentrations of C-reactive protein (CRP) and interleukin (IL)-6. Associations were explored through linear regression and restricted cubic splines.RESULTS: The majority of men had CKD stage 3a. Hypertension and cardiovascular disease were the most common comorbidities. The median PBDi was 38 (range 14-55). Across higher quintiles of PBDi (i.e. higher adherence), participants were less often smokers, consumed less alcohol, had lower BMI and higher eGFR (P for trend <0.05 for all). Across higher PBDi quintiles, patients exhibited higher insulin sensitivity and lower inflammation (P for trend <0.05). After adjustment for eGFR, lifestyle factors, BMI, comorbidities and energy intake, a higher PBDi score remained associated with higher glucose disposal rate and insulin sensitivity as well as with lower levels of IL-6 and CRP.CONCLUSION: In elderly men with non-dialysis CKD stages 3-5, adherence to a plant-based diet was associated with higher insulin sensitivity and lower inflammation, supporting a possible role of plant-based diets in the prevention of metabolic complications of CKD.

- By establishing de facto precedents, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) exercises considerable influence of over the regulatory framework governing sports, and therefore sports itself, on a global scale. CAS is however not a traditional, policy-based regulatory body and the normative changes it brings about is a function of the cases and arguments put before it and the men and women acting as arbitrators. This article explores whether, to what extent, and in what way the Nordics influence CAS.

- Sports competitions are some of the oldest global activities and have been extensively organized and regulated on a global level. As a result, it is common to speak of global sports law. However, what is global about sports law and the extent of globalization of sports law’s globalization process is unclear. This article sheds new light on these questions by studying conversations about sports law on Twitter. It confirms the parallel existence of local and global sports law and explores what constitutes each. Finally, it uncovers geography-based differences in the level of globality.
