  • Screening of Organic Contaminants in Urban Snow
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Water Science and Technology. - : IWA Publishing. - 1996-9732 .- 0273-1223. ; 64:1, s. 206-213
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Snowmelt is known to cause peak concentrations of pollutants, which may adversely affectreceiving water quality. High concentrations of metals and suspended solids in snow have beenreported, whereas studies on organic pollutants are rare. This study aims at investigating theoccurrence of anthropogenic organic compounds in urban snow in Gothenburg (Sweden). The mostfrequently detected organic pollutants in the collected snow samples were polycyclic aromatichydrocarbons (PAHs), high molecular-weight phthalates, 4-nonylphenol and 4-t-octylphenol.Brominated flame retardants and chlorinated paraffins were only sporadically detected. In severalsnow samples, the concentrations of specific PAHs, alkylphenols and phthalates were higher thanreported stormwater concentrations and European water quality standards. Pollutant sourceidentification and sustainable management of snow are important instruments for the mitigation oforganic contaminants in the urban environment.

    • Snowmelt is known to cause peak concentrations of pollutants which may adversely affect receiving water quality. High concentrations in snow have been shown for e.g. metals and suspended solids, whereas studies on organic pollutants are rarely reported. This study aimsat investigating the occurrence of anthropogenic organic compounds in urban snow, and at identifying sources of the pollutants. Snow from sites in Gothenburg, Sweden, was sampled and a range of organic substances was analysed. The most frequently detected organic pollutants in urban snow were polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, high molecular-weightphthalates, 4-nonylphenol and 4-octylphenol. Brominated flame retardants and chlorinated paraffins were only sporadically detected. In several snow samples, the concentrations of specific PAHs, alkylphenols and phthalates were higher than reported stormwater concentrations and European water quality standards. Pollutant source identification and sustainable management of snow are important instruments for the mitigation of organic contaminants in the urban environment.

  • Simulating organic pollutant flows in urban stormwater: development and evaluation of a model for nonylphenols and phthalates
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Water Science and Technology. - : IWA Publishing. - 1996-9732 .- 0273-1223. ; 65:3, s. 508-515
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Stormwater-quality models can be useful tools for predicting pollutant loads and identifying sources of contamination. Most models in current use handle pollutants such as metals, nutrients and suspended solids, whereas models including emerging organic contaminants are rare. This study aims at developing and evaluating a model for simulating stormwater flows of two groups of organic pollutants; nonylphenols and phthalates. Sources, emission patterns and environmental fate were examined to create a model framework for the organic contaminants. The model was calibrated using field data from three urban catchments. The results show that the simulated pollutant concentrations are overestimated compared to the measured concentrations, which are often close to or below the analytical detection limit. The high uncertainty and the lowpredictive power of the model may be explained by factors such as incorrect catchment data, lack of knowledge on buildup, washoff and other processes involved in substance fate, and an underreporting of pollutant concentrations in stormwater. More data on release patterns and sewer fate are needed to adequately simulate stormwater concentrations of nonylphenols and phthalates. A conventional substance flow analysis based on bookkeeping, evaluated in parallel to the computer model, has proven to be useful for calculating fluxes of nonylphenols and phthalates in urban catchments.

  • Program leadership from a nordic perspective : Program leaders' power to influence their program
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 9th International CDIO Conference.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper a continuation research at five technical universities in Nordic countries (N5T network) in 2012 is presented, wheretheaim was to find out how the program leadersconceived their function, role and mandate, and the work situations between the universitieswere compared. The previous research demonstrated that programleadershave quite different positions, strategies and methods when it comes to monitoring and developing their programs. In this paper, a deeper investigationis carried out ofthe (im-) possibilitiesto make realinfluence on the study courses that constitutesthe respective Engineering study programs. Eightprogram leaders from thefiveN5Tuniversities have been interviewed, and theanalysis of these studies, has culminatedina model for the analysis of program leadership for Engineering educationdevelopment.

  • Program leadership from a Nordic perspective - Managing education development
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of 8th International CDIO Conference, Brisbane, Australia.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nordic Five Tech (N5T) is a strategic alliance between five technical universities in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. The overall aim is to “utilize shared and complementary strengths and create synergy within education, research and innovation”. In this paper we focus on university educational development issues by investigating the program leadership at five Nordic technical universities. Specifically, the paper compares definitions, views and experiences of education leadership in the Nordic Five Tech (N5T) universities. The paper does this by, first, reviewing the definitions of roles and responsibilities for program directors at each university, and second, by presenting results from a survey carried out in March 2012 among program directors at the N5T universities. Based on this data, we analyze how program directors experience their role, their possibilities to lead, and their opportunities of learning to lead. How is time for reflection and development as leaders handled at the different universities? The paper goes on to consider what impact the mandate of the leadership role has on the possibilities for developing educational programs. For instance, how can program directors ensure that learning objectives concerning generic skills and abilities are reached? How can program directors drive implementation of integrative and value-oriented topics such as sustainable development, innovation and entrepreneurship?

  • Markers of inflammation, endothelial activation, and arterial stiffness in hypertensive heart disease and the effects of treatment : results from the SILVHIA study
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cardiovascular Pharmacology. - 0160-2446 .- 1533-4023. ; 62:6, s. 559-566
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We assessed the contribution of blood pressure (BP), inflammation, and endothelial activation to the development of structural vascular and cardiac changes in hypertension. Furthermore, the effects of antihypertensive therapy were studied. We studied 114 patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy and 38 matched hypertensive subjects without cardiac hypertrophy and 38 normotensive subjects. The group with hypertension and cardiac hypertrophy were randomized to treatment with an angiotensin receptor blocker (irbesartan) or a beta-adrenergic receptor blocker (atenolol) for 48 weeks. Markers of inflammation (high-sensitive C-reactive protein, interleukin-6, leukocyte counts), vascular function (ambulatory aortic stiffness index, arterial compliance, and pulse pressure), and endothelial activation (E-selectin, intracellular adhesion molecule-1, vascular adhesion molecule-1) were assessed. Markers of inflammation and arterial stiffness were lowest in the normotensive group and highest in patients with hypertensive heart disease; endothelial markers were similar between groups. Inflammation was independently related to BP. Markers of arterial stiffness were independently related to BP and to a lesser extent to left ventricular mass. Antihypertensive treatment improved arterial compliance; inflammatory and endothelial markers remained unchanged. In conclusion, markers of inflammation and arterial stiffness are independently related to BP. Antihypertensive therapy seems to improve arterial stiffness, but effects on markers of inflammation and endothelial activation are small.

  • Peer Evaluation of Master Program - Closing the Quality Circle of CDIO Programs?
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of 7th International CDIO Conference, Copenhagen, Denmark.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes a quality assurance project, which is conducted within the framework of the Nordic Five Tech Alliance (N5T), a strategic alliance of the five leading technical universities in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. The project is concerned with the development of a common quality enhancement tool. The tool is designed for conducting peer evaluations of educational programs enabling further development of the study programs involved, and thereby it is contributing to closing the quality circle embedded in the CDIO approach. In addition, the project aims to contribute to the consolidation of the N5T alliance by facilitating contacts between faculty members and providing them with an in-depth knowledge of the study programs within their field at another N5T institution. The paper describes the quality enhancement tool in detail, and how it was applied to evaluate master programs. It also discusses its contribution to the development of the programs. Furthermore it shows how international peer evaluation can contribute to closing the quality circle embedded in the CDIO approach, and assesses the value of the approach to contribute to the creation of long-term relationships in educational networks.
