  • Physics with e + e - linear colliders
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Physics Reports. - 0370-1573. ; 299:1, s. 1-78
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The physics potential of e + e - linear colliders is summarized in this report. These machines are planned to operate in the first phase at a center-of-mass energy of 500 GeV, before being scaled up to about 1 TeV. In the second phase of the operation, a final energy of about 2 TeV is expected. The machines will allow us to perform precision tests of the heavy particles in the Standard Model, the top quark and the electroweak bosons. They are ideal facilities for exploring the properties of Higgs particles, in particular in the intermediate mass range. New vector bosons and novel matter particles in extended gauge theories can be searched for and studied thoroughly. The machines provide unique opportunities for the discovery of particles in supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model, the spectrum of Higgs particles, the supersymmetric partners of the electroweak gauge and Higgs bosons, and of the matter particles. High precision analyses of their properties and interactions will allow for extrapolations to energy scales close to the Planck scale where gravity becomes significant. In alternative scenarios, i.e. compositeness models, novel matter particles and interactions can be discovered and investigated in the energy range above the existing colliders up to the TeV scale. Whatever scenario is realized in Nature, the discovery potential of e + e - linear colliders and the high precision with which the properties of particles and their interactions can be analyzed, define an exciting physics program complementary to hadron machines.

  • Spectroscopy at N=Z with EUROBALL III
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: AIP Conference Proceedings. - : AIP. - 1551-7616 .- 0094-243X. ; 495, s. 195-198

    • A complete study of the nuclear structure by means of gamma spectroscopy requires, in addition to the high resolution gamma measurement and accurate DCO's or angular distributions, the information concerning the Electric or Magnetic character of the transition. This information for transitions in nuclei far from stability valley is now reachable in the new generation of Ge-arrays based in composite detectors. EUROBALL III is a good example with the high polarization sensitivity of the 90 degrees ring of Clovers. The Polarization correlations PCO's measured in coincidence with the Cluster detectors permits to investigate transitions in weakly populated nuclei. In this contribution we present results on medium mass N=Z nuclei measured with EUROBALL III coupled with light particle ancillary detectors.

  • Neutrons from the breakup of C-19
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters, Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - 0370-2693. ; 381:4, s. 407-412
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Neutrons arising from the breakup of a 30 MeV/nucleon C-19 beam on a tantalum target have been measured using the 98 element array DEMON. A narrow, forward peaked neutron angular distribution, with a corresponding momentum spread considerably smaller than those measured simultaneously for N-21, O-22 and F-24 was observed for charged fragments with Z

  • Collective Excitations in the Vicinity of N=Z
  • 1999. - 1 SUPPL. 1
  • Ingår i: Proceedings INPC 1998. - 0375-9474. ; 654, s. 659-662
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In our contribution to the INPC98 conference we reported on the experimental investigation of high spin collective states in medium and heavy mass N≈Z nuclei at LNL. The main purpose is to set light on the role of the proton-neutron interaction in the collective behavior of the nucleus. In medium mass N=Z nuclei, in contrast with the stable nuclei, valence protons and neutrons occupy the same orbitals and one may expect a reinforcement of neutron-proton T=0 (np) pairing correlations[1]. In this interesting subject, the medium mass N=Z=36 72Kr has been studied and completely reported in [2]. In this proceedings we will concentrate in unpublished results concerning the onset of collectivity on nearly spherical nuclei in the 100Sn region. In nuclei with Z=50 and Z=49 dipole bands have been found indicating the presence of "Magnetic Rotation" [3].

  • Mobilization of Philadelphia-negative peripheral blood progenitor cells with chemotherapy and rhuG-CSF in chronic myelogenous leukaemia patients with a poor response to interferon-alpha
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Haematology. - : Wiley. - 0007-1048 .- 1365-2141. ; 101:1, s. 111-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this cooperative study was to evaluate the quantity and quality of Ph1-negative progenitor cells mobilized in the peripheral blood of patients with chronic myelogenous leukaemia soon after aplasia induced by chemotherapy. 32 patients ineligible for allografting who were cytogenetically refractory to interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) were entered into this study. The chronic phase varied widely, with a median duration of 17 months (range 3-90 months). All patients were treated with intensive conventional chemotherapy regimens and recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (rhuG-CSF, lenograstim). Peripheral blood progenitor cells (PBPC) were harvested by leukaphereses during early recovery from chemotherapy-induced aplasia. A total of 119 leukaphereses were performed. Median numbers of CD34+ cells and CFU-GM collected were 2.04 x 10(6)/kg and 2 9 x 10(4)/kg, respectively. There was a significant correlation between white cell count and number of CD34+ cells in the leukaphereses (P = 0.0001, r2 = 0.41, n = 104). A strict correlation between the number of CD34+ cells and CFU-GM in the leukapheretic product (P = 0.0001, r2 = 0.39, n = 110) was observed. 21% of evaluable patients (6/29) achieved a complete cytogenetic remission in the leukapheretic product and the other four patients achieved a major cytogenetic response for an overall response of 35% (10/22 patients). To date, 16 patients have been autografted and are alive. Five of them are Ph1-negative (three patients) or partially Ph1-negative (two patients). In conclusion, despite the high-risk characteristics of this study population, Ph1-negative PBPC were successfully mobilized in more than one-quarter of patients using a chemotherapy plus rhuG-CSF regimen. The importance of this achievement is increased by the current lack of other practical methods of rescuing Ph-negative cells in such patients.
