  • Chemistry and folding of photomodulable peptides : stilbene and thioaurone-type candidates for conformational switches
  • 2008
  • In: Organic and biomolecular chemistry. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 1477-0520 .- 1477-0539. ; 6:23, s. 4356-4373
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Optimized synthetic strategies for the preparation of photoswitchable molecular scaffolds based on stilbene or on thioaurone chromophores and their conformationally directing properties, as studied by computations and by NMR spectroscopy, are addressed. For the stilbene peptidomimetics 1, 2 and 3, the length of connecting linkers between the chromophore and the peptide strands was varied, resulting in photochromic dipeptidomimetics with various flexibility. Building blocks of higher rigidity, based on para-substituted thioaurone ( 4 and 6) and meta-substituted thioaurone chromophores ( 5 and 7) are shown to have a stronger conformationally directing effect. Design, synthesis, theoretical and experimental conformational analyses are presented.

  • In: Thin Solid Films. - : Elsevier BV. - 0040-6090 .- 1879-2731. ; 516:17, s. 5921-5926
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We introduce electrochromic (EC) technology for modulating the transmittance of visible light and solar radiation in window apertures, with focus on recent work on foil-type devices embodying sputter deposited WO3 and NiO films joined by a polymer electrolyte. The purpose of this paper is to present a number of new and preliminary results showing that (i) double-sided antireflection coatings based on dip coating can enhance the transmittance significantly, (ii) tandem foils can yield a ratio between bleached-state and colored-state transmittance exceeding fifty, (iii) solar irradiance onto the EC device can enhance its charge insertion dynamics and thereby its optical modulation, and (iv) electromagnetic noise spectroscopy may serve as quality assessment of EC devices.

  • Random conductivity of d- Bi2O3 films
  • 2005
  • In: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 86:24, s. 241910-
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The experimental investigation of the cubic d- Bi2 O3 phase grown on a (110) Au substrate at low temperature has disclosed a chaotic character of the conductivity at low voltage and temperature. Based on first-principles calculations, we show that the conductivity of this oxide strongly depends on the distribution of oxygen ions and that oxygen migration is able to cause a momentary switch of the conduction mechanism. © 2005 American Institute of Physics.

  • Electrochemical Characterization of TiO2 Blocking Layers Prepared by Reactive DC Magnetron Sputtering
  • 2009
  • In: Journal of Electroanalytical Chemistry. - : Elsevier BV. - 0022-0728 .- 1873-2569 .- 1572-6657. ; 637:1-2, s. 79-83
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Thin TiO2 (anatase) films were prepared by reactive DC magnetron sputtering and characterized in detail. Specifically, they were tested as compact blocking underlayers in dye-sensitized solar cells. Elastic recoil detection analysis and optical measurement showed some porosity in the sputtered films, but electrochemical measurements demonstrated good blocking characteristics. This suggests the presence of small voids rather than pinholes in the deposited films. In the case of an iodide/iodine redox couple, thin underlayers (similar to 20 nm) improved the fill factor without affecting other properties of the cell. in case of a ferrocene/ferrocenium-based electrolyte, the presence of underlayers was necessary to obtain functional dye-sensitized solar cells.

  • Paternal sperm concentration and growth and cognitive development in children born with a gestational age more than 32 weeks after assisted reproductive therapy
  • 2006
  • In: Hum Reprod. ; 21:6, s. 1514-20
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: A possible impact of paternal sperm quality on the outcome in children born after assisted reproductive technologies, especially ICSI, has been discussed. The objective of this study was to assess whether sperm concentration has any influence on growth and cognitive development in children born with a gestational age more than 32 weeks after ICSI or IVF. METHODS: Singleton children born after ICSI (n = 492) or IVF (n = 265) from five European countries were examined at age 5 years. The ICSI group was divided into five subgroups according to paternal sperm origin and sperm concentration: (1) epididymal and testicular sperm group, (2) ejaculated sperm < 1 x 10(6)/ml, (3) ejaculated sperm 1-4.99 x 10(6)/ml, (4) ejaculated sperm 5-19.99 x 10(6)/ml and (5) ejaculated sperm > or = 20 x 10(6)/ml. The IVF group was divided into two subgroups: (1) < 20 x 10(6)/ml and (2) > or = 20 x 10(6)/ml. Growth parameters at birth and age 5 were evaluated. Cognitive development was assessed with the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence-Revised. RESULTS: No significant difference was found for gestational age, birth weight and birth weight standard deviation scores (SDS) between the ICSI and IVF sperm groups. No significant difference in height and weight at age 5 or SDS weight or height or BMIs at age 5 was found. There was no significant difference in total intelligence quotient (IQ)--performance or verbal IQ--between the groups. CONCLUSION: We found no indication that growth and cognitive development in ICSI and IVF children differed depending on paternal sperm concentration.
