  • Cerebral palsy in preterm infants: a population-based case-control study of antenatal and intrapartal risk factors.
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Acta paediatrica (Oslo, Norway : 1992). - 0803-5253. ; 91:8, s. 946-51
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Previous studies have indicated that foetomaternal infection increases the risk of spastic cerebral palsy (CP) in term infants, whereas this association appears to be less evident in preterm infants. The aim of this study was to analyse infection-related risk factors for spastic CP in preterm infants. A population-based series of preterm infants with spastic CP, 91 very preterm (<32 wk) and 57 moderately preterm (32-36 wk), born in 1983-90, were included and matched with a control group (n = 296). In total, 154 maternal, antenatal and intrapartal variables were retrieved from obstetric records. In the entire group, histological chorioamnionitis/pyelonephritis, long interval between rupture of membranes and birth, admission-delivery interval <4 h and Apgar scores of <7 at 1 min just significantly increased the risk of CP, and Apgar scores of <7 at 5 and 10 min were strongly associated with an increased risk. Abruptio placentae, Apgar scores <7 at 1 min and pathological non-stress test (reason for delivery) were significant risk factors of CP only in the moderately preterm and hemiplegic groups, whereas fever before delivery was a significant risk factor in the very preterm and spastic diplegic groups. Antibiotics during pregnancy was associated with CP only in the spastic diplegic CP group. Conclusion: Antenatal infections marginally increased the risk of CP. Low Apgar score and abruptio placentae were associated with CP, especially in moderately preterm infants with hemiplegic CP.

  • Optical absorption of Li-intercalated polycrystalline tungsten oxide films : comparison to large polaron theory
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Solid State Ionics. - : Elsevier. - 0167-2738 .- 1872-7689. ; 165:1-4, s. 35-41
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Thin films of polycrystalline tungsten trioxide were manufactured using DC magnetron sputtering. Films of different thickness were deposited onto glass substrates coated with indium tin oxide (ITO). The crystallinity was confirmed by X-ray diffraction, and the grain size was found to be 30 nm. Li ions and electrons were intercalated into the sample using a three-electrode setup. The samples were submitted to optical characterization by spectrophotometry, in the visible and infrared ranges. The optical spectra were recorded at different intercalation states, and the absorption of the films was obtained. At low intercalation levels, a pronounced absorption peak was observed to be centered at a wavelength of 1.8 mum. Upon intercalation, the inserted electrons enter the conduction band, but due to a strong electron-phonon interaction, they are believed to form localized polarons. Calculations of optical absorption by large polaron theory were carried out and the position of the observed peak was in good agreement with the theory. A crossover from dielectric (low reflectance and clear phonon absorption bands) to metallic (high infrared reflectance) occurred at a Li intercalation level of around 0.05-0.15 Li/W. This may be due to overlap of the polaron states. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V All rights reserved.

  • Development of type 1 diabetes in wild bank voles associated with islet autoantibodies and the novel ljungan virus.
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: International journal of experimental diabesity research. - : Hindawi Limited. ; 4:1, s. 35-44
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Wild bank voles (Clethrionomys glareolus) may develop diabetes in laboratory captivity. The aim of this study was to test whether bank voles develop type 1 diabetes in association with Ljungan virus. Two groups of bank voles were analyzed for diabetes, pancreas histology, autoantibodies to glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD65), IA-2, and insulin by standardized radioligand-binding assays as well as antibodies to in vitro transcribed and translated Ljungan virus antigens. Group A represented 101 trapped bank voles, which were screened for diabetes when euthanized within 24 hours of capture. Group B represented 67 bank voles, which were trapped and kept in the laboratory for 1 month before being euthanized. Group A bank voles did not have diabetes. Bank voles in group B (22/67; 33%) developed diabetes due to specific lysis of pancreatic islet beta cells. Compared to nondiabetic group B bank voles, diabetic animals had increased levels of GAD65 (P < .0001), IA-2 (P < .0001), and insulin (P

  • Dosage considerations in patch testing with liquid allergens
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Contact Dermatitis. - : Wiley. - 0105-1873. ; 47:2, s. 86-90
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study examines reproducibility of water and ethanol drop volumes from plastic squeeze dropper bottles, examines the difference in drop volumes between commonly used liquid patch test solutions, and evaluates the volumes of water and ethanol needed to saturate Finn and IQ Chamber filter papers. 2 plastic squeeze dropper bottles recommended for use in patch testing have poor reproducibility compared to other bottles tested. 3 aqueous allergens tested (formaldehyde 1%, methylchloroisothiazolinone/methylisothiazolinone 0.01%, and dimethylol dihydroxyethyleneurea 4.5%) have drop volumes equivalent to water. Smaller drop volumes are produced by ethanol, hydrocortisone butyrate 1% in ethanol, cocamidopropyl betaine 1% aq., and propylene glycol 30% aq. Filter paper saturation volumes using distilled water are 16-19 muL in standard Finn Chambers and 29-35 muL in IQ Chambers. Ethanol saturation volumes are slightly lower. Previously recommended volumes of application for aqueous allergens of 15 muL for standard Finn Chambers and 25 muL for IQ Chambers (slightly below the filter paper saturation points) are appropriate. Selection of dropper bottles should consider drop volume reproducibility, differing drop volumes for different allergens, and the patch test chamber system being used.

  • Composition of Volatile Gases and Thermochemical Properties of Wood for Modeling of Fixed or Fluidized Beds
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Energy & Fuels. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1520-5029 .- 0887-0624. ; 15:6, s. 1488-1497
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The modeling of the conversion of solid fuel in combustion or gasification systems needs a description of the composition of the volatile gases that leave a fuel particle of typical size in a fixed or fluidized bed during devolatilization. Much work has been published on release of volatiles, but a general model of the composition of volatile gases and a comprehensive presentation of the related thermochemical properties of the fuel are still missing. Here, a simplified model is presented whose structure is valid for any solid fuel. The model consists of a heat and mass balance complemented by empirical data. The empirical coefficients have to be specified for certain classes of fuel: the fuels treated in this paper are one type of hardwood and one of softwood, having particle sizes in the range used in utility boilers. The species in the volatile gases are represented by the time mean mass fractions of CO2, CO, H2O, H-2, light hydrocarbons, and heavy hydrocarbons. In addition, a comprehensive set of data is presented for such properties of wood that are needed for modeling of conversion in fixed and fluidized beds. The data are taken from the literature and from measurements carried out in the present work.
