  • Öbiogeografisk teori och bildning av naturreservat
  • 1982

  • Die tool dimensioning by finite element method
  • 1987
  • Ingår i: Powder Metallurgy. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0032-5899 .- 1743-2901. ; 30:2, s. 87-96
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Stress and strain are studied using the finite element method in the dimensioning of prestrained die tools for powder compaction. The die geometry has been varied and the die has also been subjected to different types of load. The study shows that the mean pressure transverse to the pressing direction is a dimensioning factor, but that the distribution itself is not very important. For a linear pressure distribution, the stress and strain within the die will differ little from results produced under the assumption of an exponential pressure distribution. Attention is also paid to the possibilities of treating the three-dimensional situation in a real die by different methods of two-dimensional FEM analysis

  • Ultraviolet radiation and air contamination during total hip replacement
  • 1986
  • Ingår i: Journal of Hospital Infection. - : Elsevier BV. - 0195-6701. ; 7:2, s. 176-184
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ultraviolet (uv) radiation of the operating room was assessed bacteriologically in an open randomized study of 30 total hip procedures. Volumetric air-sampling demonstrated that the number of colony forming units (cfu m-3) were significantly reduced (P less than 0.001) by uv light, both close to the wound and in the periphery of the operating room. No adverse effects of the uv-irradiation were observed either in the patients or the staff. In operating rooms fitted with a 'zonal ventilation' system and with an air change rate of about 70 h-1, the addition of uv irradiation during surgery may achieve 'ultra clean' air. However, in conventionally ventilated operating rooms uv-irradiation alone is probably not sufficient to do so.

  • Internal fixation of femoral neck fractures in Parkinson's disease. 32 patients followed for 2 years
  • 1989
  • Ingår i: Acta Orthopaedica Scandinavica. - : Medical Journals Sweden AB. - 0001-6470. ; 60:6, s. 682-685
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 32 patients, suffering from Parkinson's disease, had internal fixation of femoral neck fractures. In 24 displaced fractures, 6 nonunions and 3 segmental collapses were seen; and in 8 undisplaced fractures, 1 case of segmental collapse was diagnosed. Healing complications were thus seen in one third. Total hip replacement for healing complication was performed in 3 of 32 patients. 9 patients died within 2 years. No difference in the rate of healing or mortality was detected compared with hip fracture patients without Parkinson's disease. Our study does not support primary arthroplasty for femoral neck fracture in patients with Parkinson's disease.

  • Extent of structurally reduced venous distensibility in rats.
  • 1981
  • Ingår i: Clinical science (London, England : 1979). - 0143-5221. ; 61 Suppl 7, s. 125s-128s
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 1. Venous pressure--volume relations were studied in maximally vasodilated whole-body preparations after cardiac arrest, as well as in fully vasodilated, perfused hindquarter preparations of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and normotensive controls. Central venous pressures were measured also in the anaesthetized animals before cardiac arrest. 2. Central venous pressure in intact, anaesthetized SHR was 1.9 +/- 0.20 mmHg compared with 0.75 +/- 0.25 in controls (P less than 0.001). 3. In both preparations SHR showed a nearly 20% reduction in venous compliance, whereas calculated 'unstressed' volumes (volumes at zero transmural pressure) were largely equal in SHR and controls. 4. SHR capacitance vessels thus appear to have a structurally reduced wall distensibility of about 10% with no change in overall size. It probably reflects a structural adaptation to a modest increase of average transmural pressure that also affects the low-pressure side.

  • Absorption and lymphatic transport of exogenous and endogenous arachidonic and linoleic acid in the rat
  • 1987
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Physiology: Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology. - 1522-1547. ; 252:6, s. 817-824
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • [3H]Arachidonic (20:4) and [14C]linoleic acid (18:2) were fed to thoracic duct-cannulated rats in test meals of either tracers alone, cream, Intralipid, pure arachidonic acid, or pure linoleic acid. Less [3H]20:4 than [14C]18:2 was recovered in chyle during the first 5 h. After cream feeding, the proportion of radioactivity found in phospholipids was high and increased during the first 3 h. After the meal (3-5 h) 61 +/- 6% of the 3H and 57 +/- 10% of the 14C was in phosphatidylcholine, and 11 +/- 3% of the 3H and 3.0 +/- 4% of the 14C was in phosphatidylethanolamine. Changing the fat vehicle to Intralipid or pure 18:2 decreased the proportion of label in the phospholipids and increased the 3H and 14C radioactivity in the triacylglycerol fraction, the distribution of 14C being influenced more than that of 3H. After feeding the tracers in 200 microliters of pure 20:4, greater than 90% of both isotopes was in triacylglycerol. During fasting, triacylglycerol transported 56% (0.7 mumol/h), phosphatidylcholine transported 34% (0.4 mumol/h), and phosphatidylethanolamine transported 10% (0.1 mumol/h) of the 20:4 mass. After cream or Intralipid feeding, the output of 20:4-containing phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine increased 2.1- to 2.8-fold, whereas the transport of 20:4 with triacylglycerol remained constant. Phospholipids thus became the predominant transport form for 20:4. After feeding 200 microliters of 20:4, the intestine produced, however, 20:4-rich triacylglycerols that transported 89% of the chyle 20:4

  • The influence of different insulin regimens on quality of life and metabolic control in insulin-dependent diabetics
  • 1989
  • Ingår i: Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice. - : Elsevier BV. - 1872-8227 .- 0168-8227. ; 6:1, s. 37-43
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Administration of insulin with premeal boluses of short-acting insulin using a new injection device (Novopen) was compared with a conventional three times daily injection regimen regarding aspects of quality of life and metabolic control in insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). Eighteen C-peptide-negative patients with IDDM (16 men, two women, aged 31.0 ± 7.4 years, duration of diabetes 13.0 ± 4.6 years; mean ± SD) participated in the study. All patients had been treated with three daily insulin injections for at least 1 year prior to the study. The patients were randomized into two groups. Group A started a 3-month treatment period with premeal injections of short-acting insulin and intermediate-acting insulin at bedtime. This period was followed by another 3 months using the initial three times daily injection regimen. Group B completed the study in the reverse order. Quality of life was assessed by using questionaires and personal interviews by the same clinical psychologist. Metabolic control was assessed by measuring the levels of glycosylated hemoglobin. The results show that both treatment groups experienced a general improvement in mood and well-being during the period with multiple insulin injection treatment. Furthermore, during the periods of insulin pen treatment, an increased experience of freedom and less dependence on fixed meal times were noted. Overall metabolic control, insulin dosage, body weight, and number of hypoglycemic episodes did not changes during the study. It is concluded that metabolic control, safety, and number of hypoglycemic episodes using premeal doses of short-acting insulin using Novopen were not different from those seen during conventional treatment. However, the experienced effects and consequences on quality of life during this treatment regimen were generally more positive with an increased feeling of freedom and improvement in mood.
