  • TEM wave scattering by a step discontinuity on the outer wall of a coaxial waveguide
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: IEEE transactions on microwave theory and techniques. - : IEEE Press. - 0018-9480 .- 1557-9670. ; 61:8, s. 2783-2791
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, the propagation of TEM waves along a coaxial waveguide with a step discontinuity on its outer wall is investigated rigorously by applying the direct Fourier transform and reducing the problem into the solution of a modified Wiener–Hopf equation. The solution for the field terms are determined in terms of an infinite number of unknown coefficients, which satisfy an infinite set of linear algebraic equations. These equations are solved numerically and the effect of area ratio is presented graphically at the end of the analysis. The same problem is also analyzed by applying the mode-matching technique and the results of the two approaches are compared. It is observed numerically that the Wiener–Hopf technique provides a better convergence than the mode-matching technique.

  • Physical limitations on the scattering of electromagnetic vector spherical waves
  • 2010
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Understanding the interaction between electromagnetic waves and matter is vital in applications ranging from classical optics to antenna theory. This paper derives physical limitations on the scattering of electromagnetic vector spherical waves. The assumptions made are that the heterogeneous scatterer is passive, and has constitutive relations which are on convolution form in the time domain and anisotropic in the static limit. The resulting bounds limit the reflection coefficient of the modes over a frequency interval, and can thus be interpreted as limitations on the absorption of power from a single mode. They can be used within a wide range of applications, and are particularly useful for electrically small scatterers. The derivation follows a general approach to derive sum rules and physical limitations on passive systems on convolution form. The time domain versions of the vector spherical waves are used to describe the passivity of the scatterer, and a set of integral identities for Herglotz functions are applied to derive sum rules from which the physical limitations follow.

  • Online power transformer diagnostics using multiple modes of microwave radiation
  • 2013
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In the present thesis, we propose and investigate a new approach to diagnose the effects of the various degradation mechanisms, including thermal degradation at hot spots, winding deformations due to the mechanical forces from short circuit currents, partial discharges due to local electric field surges, and increased moisture levels in the cellulose insulation due to decomposition, that affect electric power transformers during their normal operation in an electric power grid.Although the proposed diagnostics method can in principle be used to detect various degradation mechanisms mentioned above, we focus in the present thesis on mechanical deformations of transformer winding structures. Such mechanical deformations are most often caused by mechanical forces from short circuit currents, but they may also be caused by initial manufacturing errors and inconsistencies not detected by the power transformers’ suppliers quality assurance processes. We model a transformer winding surrounded by the transformer-tank wall and the magnetic core as a two-dimensional parallel plate waveguide or as a three-dimensional coaxial waveguide, where one metallic boundary (plate or cylinder) represents the wall of the transformer tank and the other metallic boundary (plate or cylinder) represents the iron core that conducts the magnetic flux. In between there is a set of parallel or coaxial conductors representing the winding segments. The new principle proposed in the present thesis is to insert a number of antennas into a transformer tank to radiate and measure microwave fields interacting with metallic structures and insulation. The responses from the emitted microwave radiation are expected to be sensitive to material properties that reflect the changes caused by any harmful deterioration processes mentioned above. Specifically, we investigate the mechanical deformations of transformer winding structures by determining the locations of the individual winding segments or turns, using measurements of the scattered fields at both ends of the winding structure. We solve the propagation problem using conventional waveguide theory, including mode-matching and cascading techniques. The inverse problem is solved using modified steepest-descent optimization methods. The optimization model is tested by comparing our calculated scattering data with synthetic measurement data generated by the commercial program HFSS.A good agreement is obtained between the calculated and measured positions of winding segments for a number of studied cases, which indicates that the diagnostics method proposed in the present thesis couldbe potentially useful as a basis for the design of a future commercial on-line winding monitoring device. However, further development of the theoretical analysis of a number of typical winding deformations, improvements of the optimization algorithms and a practical study with measurements on an actual power transformer structure are all needed to make an attempt to design a commercial winding monitoring device feasible.

  • Image Reconstruction in Microwave Tomography Using a Dielectric Debye Model
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering. - 0018-9294 .- 1558-2531. ; 59:1, s. 156 - 166
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, quantitative dielectric image reconstruction based on broadband microwave measurements is investigated. A time-domain-based algorithm is derived where Debye model parameters are reconstructed in order to take into account the strong dispersive behavior found in biological tissue. The algorithm is tested with experimental and numerical data in order to verify the algorithm and to investigate improvements in the reconstructed image resulting from the improved description of the dielectric properties of the tissue when using broadband data. The comparison is made in relation to the more commonly used conductivity model. For the evaluation, two examples were considered, the first was a lossy saline solution and the second was less lossy tap water. Both liquids are strongly dispersive and used as a background medium in the imaging examples. The results show that the Debye model algorithm is of most importance in the tap water for a bandwidth of more than 1.5 GHz. Also the saline solution exhibits a dispersive behavior but since the losses restrict the useful bandwidth, the Debye model is of less significance even if somewhat larger and stronger artifacts can be seen in the conductivity model reconstructions.

  • Absorption Efficiency and Physical Bounds on Antennas
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Antennas and Propagation. - : Hindawi Limited. - 1687-5869 .- 1687-5877. ; 2010
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract—The all spectrum absorption efficiency appears in the physical bounds on antennas expressed in the polarizability dyadics. Here, it is shown that this generalized absorption efficiency is close to 1/2 for small idealized dipole antennas and for antennas with a dominant resonance in their absorption. Also, the usefulness of this parameter is analyzed for estimation of antenna performance. The results are illustrated with numerical data for several antennas.

  • Antenna currents for optimal Q, superdirectivity, and radiation patterns using convex optimization
  • 2012
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The high Q-factor (low bandwidth) and low efficiency make the design of small antennas challenging. Here, convex optimization is used to determine current distributions that give upper bounds on the antenna performance. Optimization formulations for maximal gain Q-factor quotient, minimal Q-factor for superdirectivity, and minimum Q for given far-field are presented. The effects of antennas embedded in structures are also discussed. The results are illustrated for planar geometries.
