  • Ergonomics intervention in industries of the industrially developing countries : case study - Iran Khodro (CAR) Company-Iran
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Ergonomics. - 0014-0139 .- 1366-5847. ; 15:1, s. 28-38
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the process of introducing ergonomics to Iran and the objective of the Center for Ergonomics of Developing Countries (CEDC), the management of PTW (Prevention, Treatment and Welfare) of Iran Khodro Car Company in Iran (IKCo) has decided to apply ergonomics to improve IKCo's workstations. This was a cooperative project between PTW and the CEDC. The first phase of the project was planned to last for 18 months, during which 32 engineers, occupational health specialists and safety engineers from IKCo have been trained in ergonomics theories and practice at various workshops. The emphasis of the project was on employees' participation and on taking advantage of local skills and resources. A special organization was designed for this project. Proposed ergonomics activities were divided into three categories: 1) ergonomics training, ergonomics application and evaluation, 2) research and activities, and 3) network building. Thanks to phase 1 of the ergonomics intervention project at IKCo, the management is now in a much better position to deal with and make best use of human resources.

  • Users’ Demands Regarding Dental Safety Glasses. Combining a Quantitative Approach and Grounded Theory for the Data Analysis
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Occupational Safety and Ergonomics. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1080-3548 .- 2376-9130. ; 7:1, s. 49-59
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Eye infections are common among dentists and many are concerned, but few are using proper eye protection. To understand users' demands behind the low use of safety glasses, all dental teams in Sweden were asked which factors they found most important when choosing dental safety glasses, and rate the importance of 31 statements regarding ergonomic aspects of dental safety glasses in a questionnaire. Data were analysed using the Grounded Theory and a quantitative approach. Results showed that dentists ranked the visual aspects as most important and chair assistants the protective aspects. The highly visual demanding work performed by dentists requires safety glasses that are not yet available on the market, which might explain the low use.

  • The impact of participatory ergonomics on working conditions, quality, and productivity
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Occupational Safety and Ergonomics. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1080-3548 .- 2376-9130. ; 9:2, s. 135-47
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A participatory ergonomics model was designed for improving working conditions, quality, and productivity in a medium-sized manufacturing enterprise by making use of a Supportive Expert Team (SET). In order to implement the model, a team-based structure consisting of a Steering Committee (SC) and 2 Action Groups (AGs) was designed and a 5-phase methodology followed. To validate the model, a similar factory was selected as control. Performance of the model was successful throughout the project. AGs under the supervision of the SC and the support of the SET designed and implemented several ergonomics solutions using local resources. Our findings showed that, in comparison with the control factory, application of such a model could be considered as a provider of a more humanized work environment as well as a more efficient and cost-effective approach

  • Musculoskeletal symptoms in cold exposed and non-cold exposed workers
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Industrial Ergonomics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0169-8141 .- 1872-8219. ; 34:4, s. 271-278
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A cross-sectional epidemiologic study was carried out to explore the relationship between musculoskeletal symptoms and cold exposure in a large meat processing company in Colombia. All workers in the packing areas (n=162) were recruited: 50 workers from very cold areas (+2°C) and 112 workers from less severely exposed areas (range +8°C to +12°C). Thermal environmental conditions were measured in both areas. By Standardized Nordic Questionnaire, there was a high prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms among the more exposed workers, especially for low back, neck and shoulders. The prevalence ratios for neck and low back symptoms interfering with usual work were 11.2 (95% CI 1.3–93.4) and 4.5 (95% CI 1.6–12.4), respectively. Job features that could not be addressed in this study included work shift (day versus night), adequacy of thermal protective clothing, type of contract with the company and psychosocial conditions at work. The association between cold exposure and musculoskeletal problems is plausible but the mechanism is still obscure and there is a need for further research, both experimental and epidemiologic (preferably cohort studies).

  • Creating ergonomics awareness in industrially developing countries
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Ergonomics for the New Millenium. - : Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. - 0945289138 ; , s. 414-417
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ergonomics education and training programmes adapted to needs and prevailing socio-cultural conditions of industrially developing countries (IDC) are discussed. The training programmes involve people in ergonomics intervention activities which create positive environment at work motivating employees to utilize their creative problem solving capacity. The easy use to 'Ergonomics Checkpoint' offers on-site assessments and adjustments part of daily activity within industrial settings. The workshop procedure provides tool for worker participation and involvement in problems identification and feasible solution development
