  • Anxiety in close relationship is higher and self-esteem lower in patients with irritable bowel syndrome compared to patients with inflammatory bowel disease
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: European journal of internal medicine. - : Elsevier. - 0953-6205 .- 1879-0828. ; 24:3, s. 266-272
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background Previous research has suggested an interaction between personality factors and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) as well as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). We therefore aimed to elucidate differences in psychological and coping functioning between patients with IBD and IBS, and to assess the relationship of disease activity with these functions. Methods Seventy-four patients with IBD (mean age 43 ± 17 years, range 18–82 years) and 81 patients with IBS (mean age 37 ± 12 years, range 21–66 years) completed the questionnaires; Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, Toronto Alexithymia, Experiences in Close Relationships, and Sense of Coherence. Disease activity was evaluated either by the Harvey-Bradshaw index, the Simple Clinical Colitis Activity Index, or the Visual Analogue Scale for Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Results The study revealed that patients with IBS had higher degree of anxiety in close relationships than patients with IBD (p = 0.003), and lower self-esteem (p = 0.001). No other statistical differences between the whole groups IBS and IBD or between subgroups were seen. Conclusions The fact that patients with IBS seem to have higher levels of anxiety in relationships and lower self-esteem could influence the way the patient deal with the disease and how the communication with health care professionals works out. A higher awareness of the importance of past negative life events should be taken into consideration. Whether the disease or the personal traits are the primary event should be addressed in future research.

  • Energy Efficient and Study Promoting Lighting at High School: Preliminary Results
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: [Host publication title missing]. - 9783902842497 ; , s. 772-779
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract in UndeterminedA correct lighting solution guarantees appropriate working conditions, while saving energy. Today it is well-known that the light influences our visual perception, our emotions and our biological system, thus our health and productivity. Four identical classrooms of a high school in Helsingborg, Sweden, were equipped with two different lighting concepts: classic pendants with T5 fluorescent tubes and a new diffuse light LED system. A grand total of 72 students aged between 17 and 18 years, were occupying the rooms over the academic year. The light environment, the electricity consumption, the students’ feelings and their circadian rhythm were monitored. Compared with the fluorescent installation, the LED system appears to do not have negative effects on the students, all the while saving energy.

  • Flervetenskaplig ljusforskning
  • 2011

  • 2011
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In a laboratory study the impact of the surrounding light on alertness was study. Two types oflight sources were examined, LEDs and T5 fluorescent tubes. The illuminance level in theworking area was kept constant (500 lx), while the surrounding light was varied between 100och 350 cd/m2. Subjective ratings of the emotional status and the experience of the lightingenvironment as well as physiological measurements of cortisol and melatonin levels in thesaliva were conducted. The results show that the higher the surrounding light the higher thephsysiological cortisol levels. There were no significant differences in the experience of thelight, except that the LED light source were a little bit more bright. It should, however, bestressed that the light sources were very well shielded and no glare were at hand. The resultsshould be interpreted with caution, but with the chosen LED light sources no harmful effectswere seen in comparison to fluorescent tubes. LED may be seen as a good alternative as longas the lighting design is done careful so that glare is avoided. The study comprised 42 subjectsbetween 18-68 years of age, mean age 43 years. Preliminary results have been presented atEnergitinget 2010 and at CEEBELs conference in Katrineholm. During the spring a series ofpresentations will be held.

  • Chronic non-bloody diarrhoea: a prospective study in Malmö, Sweden, with focus on microscopic colitis.
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: BMC Research Notes. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1756-0500. ; 7:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Chronic non-bloody diarrhoea affects up to 5% of the population. Microscopic colitis is one of the most common causes, encompassing the subtypes collagenous colitis and lymphocytic colitis. The diagnosis of microscopic colitis is made by histological examination of colonic mucosal biopsy specimens. The aim of this investigation was to determine whether laboratory parameters or questions about disease history or concomitant disease could be helpful in discriminating patients with MC from those with a histologically normal colonic mucosa.
