    • Detailed interferometric measurements of the induced thermal distortions due to laser-diode and xenon flashlamp pumping of Nd:LiYF/sub 4/ are presented. The thermal distortions are quantified in terms of the primary aberrations of defocus, astigmatism, coma, and spherical. Defocus and astigmatism are shown to dominate the thermal aberrations. The measured defocus and astigmatism are converted to the conventional thermal-focal lengths in two perpendicular directions with respect to the Nd:YLF crystalline c axis for each of the two polarization states /spl sigma/ and /spl pi/. A comparison of the thermal-focal lengths measured with our xenon flashlamp and laser-diode-pumped rods is given when the rods are pumped to the same small signal gain. We calculate effective dioptric-power coefficients from our data for comparison to those reported in the literature for krypton-flashlamp pumping. A thermal time constant of 1.5 s is measured for our laser-diode-pumped Nd:YLF laser rod.

    • Human arylamine N-acetyltransferase (NAT) activity is determined by two distinct genes, NAT1 and NAT2, and the classical acetylation polymorphism in NAT2 has been associated with a variety of disorders, including lupus erythematosus and arylamine induced cancers. Over 50% of the white population exhibit a slow acetylator phenotype. The genetic basis of the defect has been identified and several DNA based assays are available for genotyping studies. We present here a simplified, rapid PCR based assay for the identification of the major slow acetylator genotypes and validate it using isoniazid as probe drug. This assay was 100% predictive of phenotype. The three genotypes (homozygous mutated, heterozygous, and homozygous rapid) corresponded to a trimodal distribution of Ac-INH/INH metabolic ratios (slow, intermediate, and rapid) without overlapping.

    • We describe the complete hardware synthesis of an ATM switch component, characterized by concurrent and dynamic processes, very high bit-rate data streams, and intensive data storage and transfer. The methodology used to synthesize it bridges the gap between an SDL system specification and an optimized single-chip implementation of communicating hardware processors, that satisfies stringent constraints on area, performance, and power. The novelty of this methodology is that through stepwise exploration, and gradual incorporation of timing constraints, it supports new optimization methods in view of memory and concurrency management, and expensive late iterations are avoided
