  • The 4f-Hybridization Strength in CemMnIn3m+2n Heavy-Fermion Compounds Studied by Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Chinese Physics Letters. - : IOP Publishing. - 0256-307X .- 1741-3540. ; 38:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We systemically investigate the nature of Ce 4f electrons in structurally layered heavy-fermion compounds CemMnIn3m+2n (with M = Co, Rh, Jr, and Pt, m = 1, 2, n = 0-2), at low temperature using on-resonance angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Three heavy quasiparticle bands f(0), f(7/2)(1) and f(5/2)(1), are observed in all compounds, whereas their intensities and energy locations vary greatly with materials. The strong f(0) states imply that the localized electron behavior dominates the Ce 4f states. The Ce 4f electrons are partially hybridized with the conduction electrons, making them have the dual nature of localization and itinerancy. Our quantitative comparison reveals that the f(5/2)(1)-f (0) intensity ratio is more suitable to reflect the 4f-state hybridization strength.

  • Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy view on the nature of Ce 4f electrons in the antiferromagnetic Kondo lattice CePd5Al2
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : American Physical Society (APS). - 2469-9969 .- 2469-9950. ; 103:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of the antiferromagnetic Kondo lattice CePd5Al2, focusing on the quasi-two-dimensional k-space nature of its Fermi surface and, tuning photon energy to the Ce 4d-4f on-resonance transition, the hybridization of the Ce 4f state. A strong shoulder feature on the f0 peak was detected, suggesting hybridization between conduction and f bands. On-resonance spectra revealed narrow, yet hybridized quasiparticle bands with sharp peaks and ∼ 9 meV energy dispersion near the Fermi energy EF. The observed dispersive hybridized f band can be well described by a hybridization-band picture based on the periodic Anderson model (PAM). Hence, the 4f electrons in CePd5Al2 display a dual nature, with both localized and itinerant features, but with dominantly localized character.

  • Three-dimensional and temperature-dependent electronic structure of the heavy-fermion compound CePt2In7 studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 101:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The three-dimensional and temperature-dependent electronic structures of the heavy-fermion superconductor CePt2In7 are investigated. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy using variable photon energy establishes the existence of quasi-two- and three-dimensional Fermi surface topologies. Temperature-dependent 4d-4f on-resonance photoemission spectroscopies data reveal that heavy quasiparticle bands begin to form at a temperature well above the characteristic (coherence) temperature T+. The emergence of low-lying crystal electric field excitation may be responsible for the "relocalization" or the precursor to the establishment of heavy electrons coherence in heavy-fermion compounds. These findings provide critical insight into understanding the hybridization in heavy-fermion systems.

  • Comparative Gut Microbiome Differences between Ferric Citrate and Calcium Carbonate Phosphate Binders in Patients with End-Stage Kidney Disease
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Microorganisms. - : MDPI. - 2076-2607. ; 8:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Gut dysbiosis in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) may induce chronic inflammation and increase morbidity. Phosphate-binding agents, generally used in patients with CKD, may potentially change the composition of the gut microbiota. This study aimed to compare the microbiota composition in hemodialysis patients treated with ferric citrate or calcium carbonate. The stool microbiota was investigated in hemodialysis patients treated with ferric citrate (n = 8) and calcium carbonate (n = 46) using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing profiling using linear discriminant analysis of effect size. Further predictive functional profiling of microbial communities was obtained with Tax4Fun in R. Hemodialysis patients treated with calcium carbonate had a significantly reduced microbial species diversity (Shannon index and Simpson index) and an increased microbial alteration ratio compared with patients treated with ferric citrate. A distinct microbial community structure was found in patients treated with ferric citrate, with an increased abundance of the Bacteroidetes phylum and a decreased abundance of the phylum Firmicutes. Members of the order Lactobacillales were enriched in patients treated with calcium carbonate, whereas taxa of the genera Ruminococcaceae UCG-004, Flavonifractor, and Cronobacter were enriched in patients treated with ferric citrate phosphate binder. In conclusion, Ferric citrate therapy results in a more diverse microbiome community compared to calcium carbonate therapy in hemodialysis patients with phosphate binder treatment. The gut microbiome reflects the phosphate binder choice in hemodialysis patients, further affecting the physiological environment in the gastrointestinal tract.

  • Narrow-gap, semiconducting, superhard amorphous carbon with high toughness, derived from C60 fullerene
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Cell Reports Physical Science. - : Elsevier. - 2666-3864. ; 2:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • New carbon forms that exhibit extraordinary physicochemical properties can be generated from nanostructured precursors under extreme pressure. Nevertheless, synthesis of such fascinating materials is often not well understood. That is the case of the C60 precursor, with irreproducible results that impede further progress in the materials design. Here, the semiconducting amorphous carbon, having band gaps of 0.1–0.3 eV and the advantages of isotropic superhardness and superior toughness over single-crystal diamond and inorganic glasses, is produced from fullerene at high pressure and moderate temperatures. A systematic investigation of the structure and bonding evolution is carried out with complementary characterization methods, which helps to build a model of the transformation that can be used in further high-pressure/high-temperature (high p,T) synthesis of novel nano-carbon systems for advanced applications. The amorphous carbon materials produced have the potential of accomplishing the demanding optoelectronic applications that diamond and graphene cannot achieve.

  • A dual-interfacial system with well-defined spatially separated redox-sites for boosting photocatalytic overall H2S splitting
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Chemical Engineering Journal. - : Elsevier BV. - 1385-8947. ; 423
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Integration of high activity, selectivity, and stability is urgently desired to achieve more ideal photocatalysts. Herein, we reported the rational design of MoS2-MnS@(InxCu1-x)2S3 (M-M@IC) catalysts with dual interface to integrate separated redox sites for boosting photocatalytic hydrogen sulphide (H2S) splitting and the resource utilization of sacrificial reagents (Na2S/Na2SO3). The spatially separated reduction (MnS) and oxidation (In2S3) sites in MnS/In2S3 heterojunction, on which MoS2 and Cu were selectively loaded, can drive electrons and holes near the surface to flow along opposite directions, while the heterojunction between MnS and In2S3 inhibits the bulk charge recombination. Furthermore, the introduction of Cu atoms creates a d-band center, which favours mass diffusion of reactants/products species and greatly facilitates sunlight response. The MoS2 serves to provide abundant sites for proton reduction due to the unsaturated-sulfur-edge-rich (US-rich) nature. As a result, the M−M@IC shows a state-of-the-art visible-light photocatalytic H2 evolution rate (126.5 mmol g-1h−1), inspiring stability of >50 h, and nearly 100% selectivity toward value-added Na2S2O3 production under optimized condition. This work opens up new opportunities for the construction and design of spatially separated catalytic site in photocatalysts.

  • Beyond hydrogen production : Solar−driven H2S−donating value−added chemical production over MnxCd1−xS/CdyMn1−yS catalyst
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Applied Catalysis B: Environmental. - : Elsevier BV. - 0926-3373. ; 284
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Simultaneous hydrogen (H2) evolution and value−added chemicals production are highly attractive but have not drawn enough attention. Here, we demonstrate a hydrogen sulphide (H2S)−induced product−targeting (HIPT) strategy for the coproduction of H2 and valuable chemical feedstocks from Na2S/Na2SO3 via overall H2S splitting using a MnxCd1−xS/CdyMn1−yS catalyst driven by visible light excitation. With this chemistry, 113 mmol g−1 h−1 of hydrogen evolution rate is achieved, surpassing most of the previously reported state-of-the-art photocatalyst, together with the production of value−added Na2S2O3 with nearly 100% selectivity. This work not only provides a good example for solar energy conversion via overall H2S splitting, but also offers new insights into the resource utilization of sacrificial donor (Na2S/Na2SO3) in various catalytic fields such as H2O splitting and CO2 reduction.

  • Mammography screening reduces rates of advanced and fatal breast cancers : Results in 549,091 women
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Cancer. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0008-543X .- 1097-0142. ; 126:13, s. 2971-2979
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: It is of paramount importance to evaluate the impact of participation in organized mammography service screening independently from changes in breast cancer treatment. This can be done by measuring the incidence of fatal breast cancer, which is based on the date of diagnosis and not on the date of death. Methods: Among 549,091 women, covering approximately 30% of the Swedish screening‐eligible population, the authors calculated the incidence rates of 2473 breast cancers that were fatal within 10 years after diagnosis and the incidence rates of 9737 advanced breast cancers. Data regarding each breast cancer diagnosis and the cause and date of death of each breast cancer case were gathered from national Swedish registries. Tumor characteristics were collected from regional cancer centers. Aggregated data concerning invitation and participation were provided by Sectra Medical Systems AB. Incidence rates were analyzed using Poisson regression. Results: Women who participated in mammography screening had a statistically significant 41% reduction in their risk of dying of breast cancer within 10 years (relative risk, 0.59; 95% CI, 0.51‐0.68 [P  < .001]) and a 25% reduction in the rate of advanced breast cancers (relative risk, 0.75; 95% CI, 0.66‐0.84 [P  < .001]).Conclusions: Substantial reductions in the incidence rate of breast cancers that were fatal within 10 years after diagnosis and in the advanced breast cancer rate were found in this contemporaneous comparison of women participating versus those not participating in screening. These benefits appeared to be independent of recent changes in treatment regimens.
