  • Understanding of Lithium 4,5-Dicyanoimidazolate-Poly(ethylene oxide) System: Influence of the Architecture of the Solid Phase on the Conductivity
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physical Chemistry C. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1932-7447 .- 1932-7455. ; 120:41, s. 23358-23367

    • Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) with high lithium conductivity are very beneficial as a safe material for lithium battery applications. Herein we present new set of a SPEs based on lithium 2-trifluoromethyl-4,5-dicyanoimidazolate (LiTDI) with wide range of ether oxygen to lithium molar ratios. The phase composition was characterized in detail with thermal, diffraction, and spectroscopic techniques, and its influence on conductivity behavior was examined. Two detected crystalline phases of LiTDI poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) were simulated with computational methods. The obtained results allowed insight into the structure of these electrolytes and helped us to understand on the molecular level factors influencing electrochemical properties and phase behavior. It was shown that ability to form a low-melting phase can be used to lower the temperature window of operation. That made it possible to keep such SPEs amorphous at 30 degrees C during 80 days. The thermal stability of the samples was checked to prove the safety of the electrolytes.

  • Growth Hormone Improves Cognitive Function After Experimental Stroke
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Stroke. - : Ovid Technologies (Wolters Kluwer Health). - 0039-2499 .- 1524-4628. ; 49:5, s. 1257-1266
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and Purpose-Cognitive impairment is a common outcome for stroke survivors. Growth hormone (GH) could represent a potential therapeutic option as this peptide hormone has been shown to improve cognition in various clinical conditions. In this study, we evaluated the effects of peripheral administration of GH at 48 hours poststroke for 28 days on cognitive function and the underlying mechanisms. Methods-Experimental stroke was induced by photothrombotic occlusion in young adult mice. We assessed the associative memory cognitive domain using mouse touchscreen platform for paired-associate learning task. We also evaluated neural tissue loss, neurotrophic factors, and markers of neuroplasticity and cerebrovascular remodeling using biochemical and histology analyses. Results-Our results show that GH-treated stroked mice made a significant improvement on the paired-associate learning task relative to non-GH-treated mice at the end of the study. Furthermore, we observed reduction of neural tissue loss in GH-treated stroked mice. We identified that GH treatment resulted in significantly higher levels of neurotrophic factors (IGF-1 [insulin-like growth factor-1] and VEGF [vascular endothelial growth factor]) in both the circulatory and peri-infarct regions. GH treatment in stroked mice not only promoted protein levels and density of presynaptic marker (SYN-1 [synapsin-1]) and marker of myelination (MBP [myelin basic protein]) but also increased the density and area coverage of 2 major vasculature markers (CD31 and collagen-IV), within the peri-infarct region. Conclusions-These findings provide compelling preclinical evidence for the usage of GH as a potential therapeutic tool in the recovery phase of patients after stroke. • Reduced Genetic Diversity and Increased Structure in American Mink on the Swedish Coast following Invasive Species Control
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Plos One. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203. ; 11:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Eradication and population reductions are often used to mitigate the negative impacts of nonnative invasive species on native biodiversity. However, monitoring the effectiveness of nonnative species control programmes is necessary to evaluate the efficacy of these measures. Genetic monitoring could provide valuable insights into temporal changes in demographic, ecological, and evolutionary processes in invasive populations being subject to control programmes. Such programmes should cause a decrease in effective population size and/or in genetic diversity of the targeted non-native species and an increase in population genetic structuring over time. We used microsatellite DNA data from Americanmink (Neovison vison) to determine whether the removal of this predator on the Koster Islands archipelago and the nearby Swedish mainland affected genetic variation over six consecutive years of mink culling by trappers as part of a population control programme. We found that on Koster Islands allelic richness decreased (from on average 4.53 to 3.55), genetic structuring increased, and effective population size did not change. In contrast, the mink population from the Swedish coast showed no changes in genetic diversity or structure, suggesting the stability of this population over 6 years of culling. Effective population size did not change over time but was higher on the coast than on the islands across all years. Migration rates from the islands to the coast were almost two times higher than from the coast to the islands. Most migrants leaving the coast were localised on the southern edge of the archipelago, as expected from the direction of the sea current between the two sites. Genetic monitoring provided valuable information on temporal changes in the population of American mink suggesting that this approach can be used to evaluate and improve control programmes of invasive vertebrates.
