  • Inclusive V-0 production cross sections from 920 GeV fixed target proton-nucleus collisions
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 29:2, s. 181-190
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Inclusive differential cross sections dsigma(pA)/dx(F) and dsigma(pA)/dp(t)(2) for the production of K-S(0), Lambda, and (&ULambda;) over bar particles are measured at HERA in proton-induced reactions on C, Al, Ti, and W targets. The incident beam energy is 920 GeV, corresponding to roots = 41.6 GeV in the proton-nucleon system. The ratios of differential cross sections dsigma(pA)(K-S(0))/dsigma(pA)(Lambda) and dsigma(pA)((&ULambda;) over bar)/dsigma(pA) (Lambda) are measured to be 6.2 +/- 0.5 and 0.66 +/- 0.07, respectively, for x(F) approximate to -0.06. No significant dependence upon the target material is observed. Within errors, the slopes of the transverse momentum distributions da,Ald t also show no significant dependence upon the target material. The dependence of the extrapolated total cross sections sigma(pA) on the atomic mass A of the target material is discussed, and the deduced cross sections per nucleon sigma(pN) are compared with results obtained at other energies.

  • Measurement of the b(b)over-bar production cross section in 920 GeV fixed-target proton-nucleus collisions
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044. ; 26:3, s. 345-355
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using the HERA-B detector, the b (b) over bar production cross section has been measured in 920 GeV proton collisions on carbon and titanium targets. The b (b) over bar production was tagged via inclusive bottom quark decays into J/psi by exploiting the longitudinal separation of J/psi --> l(+)l(-) decay vertices from the primary proton-nucleus interaction. Both e(+)e(-) and mu(+)mu(-) channels have been reconstructed and the combined analysis yields the cross section sigma(b (b) over bar) = 32(-12)(+14)(stat) (+6)(-7)(sys) nb/nucleon.

  • Basic instrumentation for Hall A at Jefferson Lab
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research. Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors, and Associated Equipment. - : Elsevier BV. - 0167-5087 .- 0168-9002. ; 522:3, s. 294-346
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The instrumentation in Hall A at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility was designed to study electro-and photo-induced reactions at very high luminosity and good momentum and angular resolution for at least one of the reaction products. The central components of Hall A are two identical high resolution spectrometers, which allow the vertical drift chambers in the focal plane to provide a momentum resolution of better than 2 x 10(-4). A variety of Cherenkov counters, scintillators and lead-glass calorimeters provide excellent particle identification. The facility has been operated successfully at a luminosity well in excess of 10(38) CM-2 s(-1). The research program is aimed at a variety of subjects, including nucleon structure functions, nucleon form factors and properties of the nuclear medium. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Alcohol, tobacco and breast cancer - collaborative reanalysis of individual data from 53 epidemiological studies, including 58515 women with breast cancer and 95067 women without the disease
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Cancer. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1532-1827 .- 0007-0920. ; 87, s. 1234-45
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Alcohol and tobacco consumption are closely correlated and published results on their association with breast cancer have not always allowed adequately for confounding between these exposures. Over 80% of the relevant information worldwide on alcohol and tobacco consumption and breast cancer were collated, checked and analysed centrally. Analyses included 58515 women with invasive breast cancer and 95067 controls from 53 studies. Relative risks of breast cancer were estimated, after stratifying by study, age, parity and, where appropriate, women's age when their first child was born and consumption of alcohol and tobacco. The average consumption of alcohol reported by controls from developed countries was 6.0 g per day, i.e. about half a unit/drink of alcohol per day, and was greater in ever-smokers than never-smokers, (8.4 g per day and 5.0 g per day, respectively). Compared with women who reported drinking no alcohol, the relative risk of breast cancer was 1.32 (1.19 - 1.45, P < 0.00001) for an intake of 35 - 44 g per day alcohol, and 1.46 (1.33 - 1.61, P < 0.00001) for greater than or equal to 45 g per day alcohol. The relative risk of breast cancer increased by 7.1% (95% CI 5.5-8.7%; P<0.00001) for each additional 10 g per day intake of alcohol, i.e. for each extra unit or drink of alcohol consumed on a daily basis. This increase was the same in ever-smokers and never-smokers (7.1 % per 10 g per day, P < 0.00001, in each group). By contrast, the relationship between smoking and breast cancer was substantially confounded by the effect of alcohol. When analyses were restricted to 22 255 women with breast cancer and 40 832 controls who reported drinking no alcohol, smoking was not associated with breast cancer (compared to never-smokers, relative risk for ever-smokers= 1.03, 95% CI 0.98 - 1.07, and for current smokers=0.99, 0.92 - 1.05). The results for alcohol and for tobacco did not vary substantially across studies, study designs, or according to 15 personal characteristics of the women; nor were the findings materially confounded by any of these factors. If the observed relationship for alcohol is causal, these results suggest that about 4% of the breast cancers in developed countries are attributable to alcohol. In developing countries, where alcohol consumption among controls averaged only 0.4 g per day, alcohol would have a negligible effect on the incidence of breast cancer. In conclusion, smoking has little or no independent effect on the risk of developing breast cancer; the effect of alcohol on breast cancer needs to be interpreted in the context of its beneficial effects, in moderation, on cardiovascular disease and its harmful effects on cirrhosis and cancers of the mouth, larynx, oesophagus and liver. • Prospective study of relationship between cytomegalovirus pneumonia and viral load in renal transplant recipients
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Transplantation Proceedings. - : Elsevier BV. - 0041-1345. ; 36:10, s. 3036-3041
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study prospectively examined the relationship between cytomegalovirus interstitial pneumonia (CMV-IP) and viral load among 56 renal transplant recipients. We sought to identify the cutoff of viral load to predict CMV-IP. Blood samples were obtained weekly within the first 2 months and every second week during 2 to 6 months after kidney transplantations. A commercial real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-method was applied to quantify CMV-DNA in plasma or in leukocytes. Among 54 renal transplant recipients who were analyzed for CMV-DNA in the blood (96.4%), 8 experienced CMV-IP (14.3%) and 2 died (3.6%). After kidney transplantation, CMV-DNA loads were near 0 in plasma before the week 4 and before the week 3 in leukocytes among both groups. From week 5 (week 4, in leukocytes), plasma CMV-DNA loads in the CMV-IP group increased, the peak value reached at week 8 in plasma and the week 9 in leukocytes. Whereas, the CMV-DNA loads both in plasma and in leukocytes in the non-CMV-IP group fluctuated at lower levels, those in plasma were significantly different between the 2 groups at the weeks 5, 7, and 9. For CMV-DNA in leukocytes, there were significant differences between 2 groups from week 6 to week 11. The present study demonstrated that dynamic determination of CMV-DNA may predict the occurrence of CMV-IP. Viral loads over 10(4) copies/mL plasma continuing for 3 weeks may serve as a cutoff to predict CMV-IP.

  • Chemical bonding, structure, and hardness of carbon nitride thin films
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Diamond and related materials. - 0925-9635 .- 1879-0062. ; 9:9-10, s. 1790-1794

    • Carbon nitride films are deposited on Si(001) substrates by reactive d.c. magnetron sputtering graphite in a pure N2 discharge. The chemical bonding and structure of carbon nitride films were probed using Fourier transformation infrared (FTIR) and near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS), and the hardness was evaluated using nanoindentation experiments. The structure and hardness for the films are dependent on the substrate temperature (T(s)). FTIR and NEXAFS spectra show that N atoms are bound to sp1, sp2 and sp3 hybridized C atoms, and the intensity of p(*) resonance for C1s NEXAFS spectra is the lowest for the film grown at T(s) = 350°C, having a turbostratic-like structure, high hardness and stress. The correlation between the structure and hardness of carbon nitride films is discussed. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. • Nuclear transparency with the gamma n ->pi(-)p process in He-4
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 68:2: 021001
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have measured the nuclear transparency of the fundamental process gamman-->pi(-)p in He-4. These measurements were performed at Jefferson Lab in the photon energy range of 1.6-4.5 GeV and at theta(cm)(pi)=70degrees and 90degrees. These measurements are the first of their kind in the study of nuclear transparency in photoreactions. They also provide a benchmark test of Glauber calculations based on traditional models of nuclear physics. The transparency results suggest deviations from the traditional nuclear physics picture. The momentum transfer dependence of the measured nuclear transparency is consistent with Glauber calculations that include the quantum chromodynamics phenomenon of color transparency.

  • Measurement of G(Ep)/G(Mp) in (e)over-right-arrowp -> e(p)over-right-arrow to Q(2)=5.6 GeV2
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 1079-7114. ; 88:9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ratio of the electric and magnetic form factors of the proton G(Ep)/G(Mp), which is an image of its charge and magnetization distributions, was measured at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) using the recoil polarization technique. The ratio of the form factors is directly proportional to the ratio of the transverse to longitudinal components of the polarization of the recoil proton in the elastic (e) over right arrowp --> e (p) over right arrow reaction. The new data presented span the range 3.5 < Q(2) < 5.6 GeV2 and are well described by a linear Q(2) fit. Also, the ratio rootQ(2) F-2p/F-1p reaches a constant value above Q(2) = 2 GeV2.
