  • Boron neutron capture therapy for glioblastoma multiforme : Clinical studies in Sweden

    • A boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) facility has been constructed at Studsvik, Sweden. It includes two filter/moderator configurations. One of the resulting neutron beams has been optimized for clinical irradiations with a filter/moderator system that allows easy variation of the neutron spectrum from the thermal to the epithermal energy range. The other beam has been designed to produce a large uniform field of thermal neutrons for radio-biological research. Scientific operations of the Studsvik BNCT project are overseen by the Scientific Advisory Board comprised of representatives of major universities in Sweden. Furthermore, special task groups for clinical and preclinical studies have been formed to facilitate collaboration with academia. The clinical Phase II trials for glioblastoma are sponsored by the Swedish National Neuro-Oncology Group and, presently, involve a protocol for BNCT treatment of glioblastoma patients who have not received any therapy other than surgery. In this protocol, p-boronophenylalanine (BPA), administered as a 6-h intravenous infusion, is used as the boron delivery agent. As of January 2002, 17 patients were treated. The 6-h infusion of 900 mg BPA/kg body weight was shown to be safe and resulted in the average blood-boron concentration of 24 μg/g (range: 15-32 μg/g) at the time of irradiation (approximately 2-3 h post-infusion). Peak and average weighted radiation doses to the brain were in the ranges of 8.0-15.5 Gy(W) and 3.3-6.1 Gy(W), respectively. So far, no severe BNCT-related acute toxicities have been observed. Due to the short follow-up time, it is too early to evaluate the efficacy of these studies.

  • A NORDTEST Method for Verification of Self-desiccation in Concrete

    • This article outlines a new NORDTEST method for verification of self-desiccation in concrete. The method involves measurements of the internal relative humidity, RH, on pieces of concrete at one month’s age. The measured RH is then compared with the requirements according to the owner. The new NORDTEST method for self-desiccation permits requirements to be made of the self-desiccation of HPC in accordance with present demands on strength. During the development of the test method experimental studies were carried out on nine concretes with w/c varying between 0.32 and 0.50. Half of the concretes contained five per cent silica fume. The experiments showed a significant effect of cement type, silica fume and w/c on the self-desiccation in concrete. The test method was also verified in the field, both when manufacturing the concrete and on site. The method was developed after co-operation between the Technical University of Denmark and Lund University. The experimental studies were performed at Division of Building Materials, Lund Institute of Technology, Lund, 1995-1999.

    • I denna artikel redogörs för uttorkning hos betong med Byggcement jämfört med andra cementsorter: Slite Std-cement samt anläggningscement. Inverkan av silikastoft på uttorkningen hos Slite Std-cement redovisas. För ändamålet studerades 14 betonger upp till ett halvt år. Inverkan av självuttorkning, lufthärdning och vattenlagring fanns med i programmet. Resultaten visar att uttorkningen i huvudsak följer vattencementtalet, dvs eftersom Byggcement innehåller cirka åtta procent mindre rent cement än vad Slite Std-cement gör, får man räkna med något sämre självuttorkning vid användning av Byggcement jämfört med självuttorkningen i betong med Slite Std-cement.

    • In this article laboratory and analytical studies of the chloride migration coefficient, D, are presented. The result of studies on chloride migration of Self-Compacting Concrete, SCC, are compared with the corresponding properties of normal concrete with the same water-cement ratio, w/c and air content. Both 28 and 90 days' age applied at the start of the testing. Six SCC were studied and 2 NC, all with w/c = 0.39. The effect of normal and reversed order of mixing (filler last), increased amount of filler, type of filler, limestone powder, increased air content and large hydrostatic concrete pressure were investigated.

  • Compatibility between Flooring Materials and Concrete

    • This article outlines an experimental and numerical study on compatibility between flooring materials and concrete. Full-scale cylinders and slabs with different kinds of floorings were tested. The cylinders were studied in the laboratory, and cured in the same way as at a building site. The slabs were ground, treated with plaster and/or untreated (reference concrete). These slabs were water-cured and/or air-cured. Analyses were carried out on the volatile organic compounds from the flooring systems at the Swedish Testing and Research Institute, SP, Borås, on the alkali profile at Scancem Research Ltd., Slite and on the moisture conditions of the concrete at Lund University, Lund. The results show the influences of a layer of plaster, of porosity, of the type PVC carpet and of the type of adhesive on the measured volatile organic compounds. Moisture content, i.e., relative humidity, carbonation depth and alkalicontent of the concrete had a minor effect on the measured volatile organic compounds. Les lignes générales de cet article ont trait à une étude numérique expérimentale de la compatibilité entre des matériaux utilisés sur les sols et le béton. Les tests ont été réalisés à échelle 1, sur des cylindres et des plaques avec des matériaux différents. Les cylindres ont été étudiés en laboratoire et traités de la même manière que dans une conctruction. Les plaques ont été polies et traitées au plastique et/ou non traitées (béton de référence). Les plaques ont été soumises à l’eau ou à l’air. L’analyse de la composition organique volatile a été réalisée par l’Institut suédois de tests et de recherches, SP, de Borås, celle du profil alcalin par Scancem Research Ltd., et celle du taux d’humidité par l’Université de Lund. Les résultats montrent une influence de la couche plastique, de la porosité et du type de tapis PVC ainsi que du type de colle sur la composition organique volatile mesurée. Le taux d’humidité, c’est-à-dire l’humidité relative, la profondeur de carbonatation, le taux alcalin du béton ont un effet mineur sur la composition organique volatile.

  • Correlating Laboratory and Field Tests of Creep in High-Performance Concrete.

    • This article outlines experimental laboratory and field studies on creep of young or mature High Performance Concrete, HPC, carried out between 1991 and 1999. For this purpose about 400 cylinders made out of 8 mix compositions of HPC were studied in the laboratory. Half the number of HPC was sealed; half of the studies were carried out on air-cured HPC. Parallel tests on strength, internal relative humidity, RH, and hydration were carried out on about 900 cubes that were made of HPC from the same batch as the cylinders were. Fragments from the strength tests were used to observe RH. Shrinkage was studied parallel to creep. The results and analyses of the laboratory studies show large influence of the maturity and of the mix composition of the HPC on the measured creep. The creep coefficient of HPC is smaller than in normal concrete. In contrast, shrinkage of HPC is somewhat larger than in normal concrete. The results obtained in the laboratory were correlated to field tests on 27 beams. The results in the field coincided well with the results in the laboratory studies.

    • This article outlines an experimental and numerical study on short-term and long-term creep recovery in High Performance Concrete. About 200 cylinders and 800 cubes were tested. The ambient climate was held constant at 20 °C and 55% relative humidity. Results and analyses are presented as regards short-term and long-term creep recovery with some related properties. The creep deformations are separated into elastic, plastic and viscous creep deformations. The project was carried out between 1992 and 1997. Les lignes générales de cet article ont trait à une étude numérique expérimentale sur la recouvrance en fluage à court et long terme du béton haute performance. Environ 200 cylindres et 800 cubes ont été testés. Le climat ambiant a été maintenu constant à 20 °C et à 55% d’humidité relative. Les résultats et les analyses présentés ont trait à la recouvrance en fluage à long et court terme et présentent quelques propriétés. Les déformations en fluage sont réparties en déformations élastiques, plastiques et visqueuses. Ce projet a été mené à bien entre 1992 et 1997.

    • In this paper an experimental and analytical exploration on the effect of water-binder ratio (w/b), silica fume and age on autogenous, carbonation, drying and total shrinkage of High-Performance Concrete (HPC) is outlined. Eight types of HPC were studied. Carbonation, internal relative humidity (RH) and strength were studied on specimens from the same batch of HPC that was used in the studies of shrinkage. The results indicate fairly good correlation between carbonation, shrinkage, w/b and RH. The type and amount of silica fume affected shrinkage.
