  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The present volume consists of six essays that illustrate the wide thematic and chronological scope of Nordic name research. Jan-Åke Alvarsson explains how proper names can reflect changes within the Pentecostal movement in Sweden. Bent Jørgensen sheds light on various trends in Danish onomastic research and presents a fundamentally interesting study of the village name Bleld. Maria Löfdahl deals with names of younger settlements in Sotenäs härad, Bohuslän; a central theme in her research is naming on the pattern of other names. Svante Strandberg's two contributions focus on the interpretation of the river name Lafsån in Västergötland and the farm name Njälva in Södermanland. In Inge Særheim’s essay, we face place names with a tragic historical background: the abandonment of unwanted infants.

  • I gatuplanet. Namnbrukarperspektiv på gatunamn i Stockholm
  • 2007
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The purpose of this thesis is to apply a name user perspective to the street names of Stockholm, with a focus on knowledge and views about names among the city’s inhabitants. On the basis of interview surveys, a picture is presented of the knowledge and views of Stockholmers regarding their city’s street names and the semantic or thematic name categories to which many of them belong; that is, the study seeks to identify general features of the ways in which the people of the city relate to their street names. Surveys were carried out in seven districts: Hedvig Eleonora parish, Hjorthagen, Fredhäll, Norra Ängby, Årsta, Fruängen and Akalla. A separate survey studied the range and associative properties of street names among Stockholmers not living in the vicinity of the streets in question.General findings emerging from the surveys are that people are very familiar with the names in their local area; that knowledge about these names contributes to their well-being and sense of identity and belonging; that name categories are appreciated and considered to have an orientating function; that names which are seen as elegant or distinguished are regarded as enhancing the image and perceptions of the environment in which they occur; that long names and those made up of several words may be regarded as unwieldy in practical use; and that people need and create names for more limited park and recreational areas, while formally adopted names for larger green spaces are not used or are felt to be unclear in their reference.

  • Ingermanländares namnskick under 1900-talet : Kontinuitet och förändring
  • 2004
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • An increasing number of personal names of non-Swedish origin exist in Sweden. This study deals with the names among Finnish speaking lutheran and orthodox Ingrian refugees from the former Soviet Union. The investigation is based upon written questionnaires, archives and interviews with persons born 1920-52. To the quantitative investigation a qualitative study has been added focusing names in relation to personal identity. Particular emphasis has been placed upon charting the Ingrians’ and Ingrian Finns’ surnames at the time of arriving in Sweden. An attempt is also made to explain different types of difficulties that Swedish-speaking people meet in connection with the immigrants’ foreign names. The question of preserving the original surnames versus changing into new Swedish names is investigated. The purpose of this investigation also has been to make a longitudinal study of what influence the majority languages and politics in three countries – Russia, Finland and Sweden – may have had upon the naming of Ingrian children born. The present study indicates that the traditional naming of children underwent changes during the late 1930s into more new Finnish names and also names from the Russian tradition. In the middle of 1940s the spelling of a number of forenames were changed by the Finnish authorities into a Finnish normalized mode. The orthodox Ingrians’ Russian family names were in many cases exchanged into Finnish ones. When registered in Sweden the forenames sometimes got a mixture of Finnish as well as Swedish orthography by the Swedish registrators. No surnames were changed until several years of stay in the immigrants’ new country, mostly in the 1960s. Changing names was voluntarily done which was caused by a number of different reasons. The surnames are investigated and cathegorized according to a trial of perception among Swedes made by the author. The results are applied upon the names of the investigation and one becomes aware of some of the reasons for preservation or change of surnames. According to the interviews it seems that there is no direct link between choice of name, name-giving and changes of name, on the one hand, and self-identification, on the other. When naming children born in Sweden, parents appear to have been guided by a desire to choose an integrated name, rather than to preserve the distinctive character of traditional names. The study shows how people’s naming customs and their changes have mirrored the geopolitical history of this ethnic group.

  • Ortnamnen i Göteborgs och Bohus län. 19 : Ortnamnen i Tanums härad. 2, Naturnamn
  • 2006
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This book is a presentation and a linguistic interpretation of the place-names of the district of Tanum in the former County of Gothenburg and Bohus in western Sweden. The studied names consist of names of lakes, rivers, islands, mountains etc., of different units of cultivated land and of other entities such as bridges and roads. Dialect pronunciations and earlier name forms found in various sources are presented to the reader. Several of these names designate localities that cannot be identified today but were once part of an ancient name-landscape. A large number of dialect words are also presented. This book also contains two essays. The first essay discusses the series Ortnamnen i Göteborgs och Bohus län with an emphasis on its design, its methods of interpretation and its theoretical approach. The second essay discusses the topographical designations berg, fjäll, hog, kulle and ås in their functions as appellatives and as place-name elements. Potential similarities and differences between the two systems are discussed.
