  • Transient wave propagation in gyrotropic media
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: Invariant inbedding and inverse problems. - 0898713056 ; , s. 77-89
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this paper transient electromagnetic wave propagation in an inhomogeneous, cold plasma is considered. It is assumed that a constant magnetic induction is present and that the plasma is spatially inhomogeneous in the direction of the magnetic induction. Losses in the plasma are modeled with a collision frequency ν. The direct problem, which is to calculate the reflected and transmitted responses of the plasma, is considered in this paper. Special attention is paid to the precursor effects in the plasma and several examples of precursor effects in an inhomogeneous plasma are showed.

  • Wave splitting and imbedding equations for a spherically symmetric dispersive medium
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: Invariant inbedding and inverse problems. - 0898713056 ; , s. 103-113
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The direct problem of time dependent electromagnetic scattering in the dispersive sphere is solved by a wave splitting technique. The electric field is expanded in a series involving vector spherical harmonics, leading to a system of wave equations for each term. These systems are reduced to scalar wave equations for each term, which are solved via reflection operators. Some preliminary numerical results are presented.

  • Time domain inversion techniques for electromagnetic scattering problems
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: Invariant imbedding and inverse problems. - 0898713056 ; , s. 1-29
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper presents a review of and a comparison between two different methods to solve an inverse scattering problem in the time domain. The problem is that of propagation of transient electromagnetic waves in spatially inhomogeneous slabs of finite length. The permittivity and conductivity profiles are assumed to vary only with depth and the scattering problem is thus onedimensional. Several algorithms to solve the direct and inverse scattering problems for continuous and discontinuous permittivity profiles are suggested. Some of these algorithms have not been published before. The aim of this paper is to compare and review these methods. More specifically, the numerical performance of the invariant imbedding approach (layer-stripping)and the Green functions formulation (downward continuation)is compared. Some new results based upon time reversal techniques for a lossless slab are presented in an appendix.

  • Spherical Vector Wave Expansion of Gaussian Electromagnetic Fields for Antenna-Channel Interaction Analysis
  • 2008
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this paper we introduce an approach to analyze the interaction between antennas and the propagation channel. We study both the antennas and the propagation channel by means of the spherical vector wave mode expansion of the electromagnetic field. Then we use the expansion coefficients to study some properties of general antennas in those fields by means of the antenna scattering matrix. The focus is on the spatio-polar characterization of antennas, channels and their interactions. We provide closed form expressions for the covariance of the field multi-modes as function of the Power Angle Spectrum (PAS) and the channel cross-polarization ratio (XPR). A new interpretation of the Mean Effective Gains (MEG) of antennas is also provided. The maximum MEG is obtained by conjugate mode matching between the antennas and the channel; we also prove the (intuitive) results that the optimum decorrelation of the antenna signals is obtained by the excitation of orthogonal spherical vector modes.

  • Stabilization of evanescent wave propagation operators
  • 2022
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper presents a stabilized scheme that solves the wave propagation problem in a general bianisotropic, stratified medium. The method utilizes the concept of propagators, i.e., the wave propagation operators that map the total tangential electric and magnetic fields from one plane in the slab to another. The scheme transforms the propagator approach into a scattering matrix form, where a spectral decomposition of the propagator enables separation of the exponentially growing and decaying terms in order to obtain a well-conditioned formulation. Multilayer structures can be handled in a stable manner using the dissipative property of the Redheffer star product for cascading scattering matrices. The reflection and transmission dyadics for a general bianisotropic medium with an isotropic half space on both sides of the slab are presented in a coordinate-independent dyadic notation, as well as the reflection dyadic for a bianisotropic slab with perfect electric conductor backing (PEC). Several numerical examples that illustrate the performance of the stabilized algorithm are presented.

  • Propagation of transient electromagnetic waves in inhomogeneous and dispersive waveguides
  • 1995
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Transient wave propagation in a waveguide filled with an inhomogeneous dispersive medium is analyzed. The waveguide is inhomogeneous in the longitudinal direction, but is homogeneously filled in the transverse directions. The analysis is performed in the time domain and is based upon a wave splitting technique and the method of propagators. The propagator maps the exciting field from one position in the waveguide to the field at another position. This mapping is represented as time convolution integrals. The theory is exemplified by numerical examples where it is shown how wave trains of different shapes are propagating in a waveguide filled with a homogeneous dispersive medium.

  • Three-dimensional subterranean target identification by use of optimization techniques
  • 1991
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The identification of a subterranean metallic ore from scattering experiments, conducted on the surface of the ground or in a bore hole, is a classic geophysical problem. In general this problem is not well-posed. However, a priori information about the shape of the target provides enough regularization to make the problem numerically stable. The problem is solved by minimizing the mean-square error between an eleven parameter model, based on the null field approach, and the data. The optimization is done with a Newton technique in which a singular value decomposition of the model Jacobian is employed. The algorithm is very stable to noise and makes good reconstructions from feasible starting guesses, for realistically noise contaminated data.

  • Optimal Electromagnetic Measurements
  • 2000
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We consider the problem of obtaining information about an inaccessible halfspace from electromagnetic measurements made in the accessible half-space. If the measurements are of limited precision, some scatterers will be undetectable because their scattered fields are below the precision of the measuring instrument. How can we make optimal measurements? In other words, what incident fields should we apply that will result in the biggest measurements? There are many ways to formulate this question, depending on the measuring instruments. In this paper we consider a formulation involving wavesplitting in the accessible half-space: what downgoing wave will result in an upgoing wave of greatest energy? This formulation is most natural for far-field problems. A closely related question arises in the case when we have a guess about the configuration of the inaccessible half-space. What measurements should we make to determine whether our guess is accurate? In this case we compare the scattered field to the field computed from the guessed configuration. Again we look for the incident field that results in the greatest energy difference. We show that the optimal incident field can be found by an iterative process involving time reversal “mirrors”. For band-limited incident fields and compactly supported scatterers, this iterative process converges to a sum of time-harmonic fields.

  • Resonance Enhancement in Noise
  • 2023
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This document compares two approaches to finding resonance peaks from asingle sensor: 1) averaging multiple measurements of the transfer function orfrequency-domain scattering matrix, versus 2) using the iterative time-reversalprocess, which involves iteratively re-transmitting a time-reversed version ofthe scattered field at the previous iterations. The averaging method has theadvantage of handling arbitrarily much noise if sufficiently many averages areused. On the other hand, up to a certain level of noise, the time-reversalmethod has dramatic advantages over the averaging method; but it also requires more complex equipment. This document discusses the tradeoffs involved, with the goal of providing information that may be useful in the system design process.
